I think once you get into lenses costing many thousands of dollars the price becomes less of an issue. The thought being, if you can afford $10K for a lens you are unlikely to balk at $12K, just ask a Leica owner lol. This is a good move for Sony however and it gives professionals more confidence to invest long term in Sony as a camera system. That said let's not forget that Sony did release a few fast telephoto primes for A mount and we kind of know how that ended given A mount support overall is essentially minimal these days. It wouldn't hurt to encourage early adopters by undercutting both Canon and Nikons equivalents but I suspect economies of scale partly dictated the selling price. All in all it's a move in the right direction for Sony 😊

dunnymonster absolutely agreed. In my opinion this is the best time for Sony to hit Nikon and Canon hard and they probably will at Photokina.

If this lens produce same or better AF and IQ than 400mm f/.2.8 Canon or Nikon, will be another slap to thats ecosystems!

Gustavo Ulloa yes absolutely correct. And I have the feeling that it is darn good. Why it is always more expensive though??? 🙄🙄🙄

Good that Sony publishes this lens. It will increase the pressure on Nikon and Canon to move faster. However, Sony won't a vital option for Wildlife photographers as Nikon and Canon have a lot more to offer in the long telephoto lens range. And they are usually invested heavily into this equipment already. Without a heavy advantage when getting the Sony, I don't think many will move to Sony. For that purpose?

Stefan1968ful yes I agree but in the same time let's not forget that the new sports and wildlife photographers can get Sony now, and in a long run that's not good for Nikon and Canon. But as you said, at least this will put some pressure on them to pull their head out of their..... and do something 😂😂😂😂

Competition is good. I like that. No doubt. For me personally Sony won't be an option again, I had too many troubles with Sony (A7R2, A6500) and for me this is just a hyped system. I don't like e.g. the build quality of the Sony A series, it really sucks when you do outdoor photography. I just give you an example: when I was a major salt lake here in the northwestern part of China, I got during the shooting some water splashed on the backside of my Sony A7R2. And although I immediately cleaned it, the salt water got deep into the body via the super small turn wheel on the backside. And some days later the wheel got completely stuck. What a hell. Also because of an issue with the shutter I filed the Sony A7R2 in for a repair and guess what, it disappeared for 4 months. And for 1.5 months Sony did not even know where my camera is in the queue. I learned the hard way that Sony does not even repair their own cameras, they use a 3rd party contractor for that. What a hell. To be honest, I never would even consider (not even in my nightmares) to spend 12k USD on a lens coming from Sony after such an experience. No way no go. I never had any issue like that with my Nikon D5, I went through Siberia, it got covered with ice and snow at -30C, I was in the desert with it, it got a shitload of dust and sand on the body. And it still worked like a charm. That's it. The only good thing of this Sony hyping is that I could sell my Sony gear with very limited loss.

This kind of lens price is doesn't matter, usually this kind of lens sell via company purchase, Sony direct sell/deal to newspaper company, news agency or magazine's than company give to there photographer. (same to Nikon/Canon). usually Packages with Camera, multiplier lens.

Lim Wiching probably you are right. But it is nice to see that Sony is serious about pro lenses for sport and wildlife shooters.

Longrider that is actually not a bad idea. My only issue is that I don't own any Sony camera. So we might need to chip in another few hundred bucks for a camera as well??? 😂😂😂😂😂
