- This week we harvested the first of our potatoes. Some of you may remember we tried an experiments this year comparing regular potatoes that had started sprouting with proper seed potatoes. The results are in!
Rebecca also got the tomatoes in the beds. Some of the seedlings did not enjoy the pots they were potted up into and have barely grown in the last couple of months. We planted them out and we’ll see what happens. We have a lot of tomato plants this year so fingers crossed for a good harvest.

Welcome to Living in the Loire, we are a family in rural France, renovating previously poorly converted barns.
We aim to do most of the work ourselves, being as frugal and as eco as possible. We are learning on the job and we hope to share the skills we pick up along the way.
When possible we will take you on a tour of the region (the garden of France) sharing with you the numerous chateaux, towns and markets.
As well as the house we will be transforming the garden, bringing part of it back to its previous use as a potager. This is our dream and one of the main reasons of leaving the city to move to the countryside in France.
Join us on our journey!
Your videos are so relaxing and interesting! I hope you keep on sharing all the activities you are enjoying with your children!
This type of content is so soothing. I hope to see more of it alongside renovation ones
Thank you for the update of your garden. The beautiful view between the clouds in the sky that was breathtaking. Your greatly appreciated.
Thank you so much J Drew. We have had some fantastic skies recently.
I agree working in the dirt is very relaxing and meditative - I grew up on a farm in Canada with all our food there and now in my 70s I still enjoy gardening, although I rebelled in my teenage years! But I find it very 'grounding'. It is so good to see you enjoying and nurturing your family there.
I so pleased you haven’t given up
On the video’s. i hope the shop goes well for you 🎉
Thank you ☺️
Nice way to test, experiment and learn!
I love how the boys mimic the planting.....they are sooo cute!! I really enjoy your vlogs..thank you!!
Thanks Jane. Yes, they love to 'help'!
I love your vlogs, they’re very informative and also very relaxing!
Thanks Fran
Beautiful again.

Hey guys!!!! It's 'potato day'.... great 👍👍👍 love this english accent....
Juan
Happy to see you proud of your produce. Little by little everything is going to be rewarding for your hard work and dedication. Love your fsmily❤❤❤
Thanks Luisa
Excellent video. Wonderful photography. Love watching.
An interesting thing I learnt with transplanting plants from trays and other pots is it’s best to release the roots from the existing soil before replanting them because planting them straight out of the tray often the restrictions of the tray causes the roots to get root bound or misdirected and they take a very long time to recover from that to develop a normal outward growing root system. I noticed that in sharp relief with a a tray of veg plants I bought recently, some were very root bound and I released the roots before replanting and they flourished whereas the the ones I didn’t release the roots on grew very slowly/poorly in comparison.
Great tip, thanks!
i love it al......greetings from Holland
🎉potato, potata lol
I love your videos ♥️
Thank you 🤗
Thank you Julie
Very curious about the potato’ experiment’.
I wonder about the flavour? If they were the same variety…
It definitely wasn't the most scientific or accurate experiment 😂. I'm pretty sure they weren't the same variety. Having said that the taste of both is pretty similar. A good pinch of salt and a knob of butter and they're delicious ☺️
dammm, your both too good and best example of a real couple.but the most good thing you do that i observe,...i really like those song that you play in this video, and even the last one, before ending this video..
dammm, how do you do that...i guess both of you are great creator..upload more video, and thank you so much.
Thanks for your message. Glad you enjoyed the music. Brook does the vast majority of the filming and all the editing so I really can't take any credit 😂
Lovely video. Loved it all and especially the end with the weather front coming in.
Hi, you picked the potatoes too early. Your potato crop will be ready to harvest once there is a yellow colouring on the stems and leaves. Cut the plants down to soil level then about a week later, start lifting the crop with a garden fork, taking care not to spike any of the tubers. Potatoes put on their size in that last week as they put everything into the tuber. Your property is looking fantastic and I wish you well with your future projects.
Thanks Louis. The first bed were yellowing but I did wonder if it was a bit early for the second bed. Will keep your advice in mind for our other potato bed.
Hi guys. I've been watching your progress since the beginning and is something that we would love to do for so long now. Also have our first child on the way and we think that this is the best route to go to living a full and enriched life. Urban life is such a drag. I'm quite jealous
Go for it!
Excellent work
Saw a good tip on a gardening show here in the USA. Buy some lemon grass and cut the greens into 1 inch pieces and float them in your rainwater collection barrels. Supposedly, it keeps bacteria and impurities at bay. Haven’t tried it myself yet however!
Love your vlogs and the information was helpful!
All your hard work is paying off. You are thriving. The memories you are creating as a family are priceless.
I want you both to know, even though this is probably hard work video and taking care of children, and trying to make a life. What a beautiful thing you will be leaving behind for them, to show and see how loving their parents were to film them growing up and keep a diary. I think it's very lovely. When I moved one time my sister had all my VHS tapes of my children when they were newborns and she lost everyone of them I have nothing now, of them as babies growing up in film only in still photo. But at least I have those. Love your videos, much love from Oklahoma USA Jackie 🇺🇸 💖
Thanks Jackie. Me and Brook both have one VHS of us when we're young but would love to have more so hopefully the boys will like looking back on it one day.
I wonder ,aren’t there any gophers in France ? I just have a ‘yard’ , a third of an acre in California. I cannot plant anything. It will all be eaten, either by gophers or deer. So it is a ‘nature preserve’. I love your video’s ! 🙏💕🌷
If you want to stop Deer from getting by certain plants, take egg shells and sprinkle them around the area you want to keep deer away from.
I once worked with the wife of a potato farmer. She always grew her own potatoes as the ones from the farm were sprayed with growth inhibitor to be stored successfully for the supermarkets….
Love your very calm and gentle video, after a long wait for hip surgery I am determined to get back to growing as I used to have plans ready
Thank you. Hope the hip recovery is going well.
love your vods
Congratulations🎉. Doing well there. Love the videos.
Soil looked so dry, happy to see rain.
beautiful ending!!
Lovely to see you both. Such interesting content. I enjoy seeing your gardening videos !
Thanks Kyle

Ottime patate... bravi👍👋👋
hi guys, i'm also in france! La Vendee, have you seen the price of new potatoes? what you got is excellent!!!!! Im half Irish! don't do that again ! joking, my humor. just started watching and almost caught up on all your videos! xx
Lovely vlog.
❤
👌👌🏻
That was a fun experiment :D
My supermarket potatoes are strong and they even survived me moving to a different part of the country (they're in a cardboard box which was a mistake. I'll use potato grow bags next year). They haven't flowered yet. After this video I look forward to harvesting them in a couple of weeks :)
They seem a pretty hardy crop. Hope you get a good harvest!
As an Irish person yes
If I'm a 1/4 Irish McAllister, does that help?
@@LivingintheLoire 3/4 we’ll still hold you responsible for the famine 😉

It is just a tought, but wouldn’t it be a smart thing to dig those watercontainers in to the ground. Easier access and the water stays cool, less evapouration.
Yes but they are just temporary until we get a bigger system once the barn is complete and we harvest from the roof.
Hi guys, not sure where your seed potatoes come from but here in the UK most seed potatoes come from Scotland, reason for this is the places in Scotland where seed potatoes are grown are relatively aphid free, so there's little chance your potatoes having any diseases in them, so to be on the safe side it's better to buy from a reputable seed merchant.
Oh ok I didn't know that! Thanks
❤❤❤❤🎉🎉🎉🎉 chào bạn nhé ❤❤❤❤

Didn't see any Colorado Potato Beetles on your plants- do you have them? I raised chickens for their eggs and meat when I farmed- do you buy chicken feed that is reasonably priced? Most grain products, such as feed, have skyrocketed in cost. I am curious about the depth of the topsoil.
Look forward to seeing what kind of results you have from your tomato, pepper, and watermelon plantings because, from an ex- farmer's point of view, the plantings are very late- but you did mention that the season extends through September, where you are. They, along with corn require a lot of water.
Look forward to your next video!
We did! Not on this batch which was planted earlier but on another bed of potatoes which was planted a couple of weeks later. Managed to get to them before they caused much damage.
Growing vegetables is like printing money.
Seeing you digging the soil in search of potatoes while your kids were going full Indiana-Jones-ish was very satisfying. And also, I have resolved the riddle: what the heck happened to these smiling misfits? Garden, that's what happened to them, and what a joy it is to look at. Nota bene: found your song while digging in my memories. Prenez soin de vous. czcams.com/video/LOILZ_D3aRg/video.html
The quality of your soil is very sad. Compost in a necessity.
Yes, we need to top up that bed with compost. We recently took the garlic out and haven't had time to get any mulch for it but we will.
Since there are 2 of you, it would be 'Who harvested more potatoes?' Sorry to be a grammar pedant.
How sorry? 😴
The bad Irish accent is very offensive. So park it thanks. I’m sure you wouldn’t be attempting bad accents for other crops.
As someone who is from Somerset. Apples to make cider is the common trope. Would I do it, sure. Is it a lazy stereotype, maybe. Is it very offensive to me, no. This is a good explanation of what I'm trying to say. czcams.com/video/73rwD8cvmUQ/video.html
