Looks great. One thing I would say, and I have created a lot of metallic powder finishes over the years, is it would be more practical and cheaper all round to do it a different way. Just pour the powder into the mould giving a good tap all over. Tip the excess powder out of the mould leaving the surface coated with powder. Mix the blackened resin and pour in. When set, wire wool to the same effect. You use a fraction of the powder because all the powder below the surface is wasted and never touched, and it is very expensive. If it is weight you need in it, you can put some nuts and bolts, or similar into the mould. You can give depth to the detailing by mixing up an oil based paint, painting the entire surface. When dry, wire wool again leaving the details and shadows in contrast. I then spray a fixative to seal the surface.
Anthony you are 100% correct. I have done it that way too. That skull looks amazing though. Thank you
But bubbles! If you don't brush the resin into the crevices, you might get bubbles. But if you only put the metallic powder on the surface of the mold, it will get scraped away as you vigorously brush the resin in... I think the powder coated mold works best for simple molds that don't have tons of nooks and crannies... idk! I would try three trial casts. One using the mixed metallic powder and brush method, one with powder coated mold and brushed resin, and one with powder coated mold and carefully poured resin... that seems like the most scientific way to handle the question.
I think there’s a difference between metallic powder and bronze powder. Bronze powder is actual ground up bronze, unlike metallic powder or mica. The bronze powder has to be at the surface so it can be burnished with the steel wool, and it’s added to give weight and heft, so it feels like hot cast bronze. This is essentially 60% bronze and 40% resin. It’s a genius method. Now I’m searching where to find powdered copper and bronze.
@@alleymaranto9310 Hi Alley. If you are in the UK, a company called Tiranti sell powders.
As someone who has been really thinking about starting epoxy projects, this was a helpful tip! I’m all for conservation lol
One really interesting engineering problem I worked on was casting tiles that I wanted to come out feeling like stone, like polished granite. It took me about a year of trial and error, but I did eventually nail down a process for it, though it required a pressure pot, some practice, and infill media of precisely the right particle size and density. But the end result was that the pieces came out looking looking and feeling like CNCed granite tiles. They also had that sort of conductive coolness at the touch you associate with stone. I'm very pleased.
This looks amazing! I'd really recommend using the steel wool wet, and even with a bit of soap on it. The steel dust is such a mess when dry.
Thank you, I’ll give that a try
@@SteveMcDonaldCrafting howd that work out for you?
So nice to see a video by somebody who has done the project before and knows what they are doing.
Instead of trying to figure out how to do their first project whilst recording. Thank you
@ Steve McDonald Arts and Crafts
Consider polishing up the entire piece and then oxidizing it. Once oxidized, you go back and nock the oxide of the high spots where it would naturally be handled. Would look incredible. Oh, if you don't forget to spray a clear coat to keep the polished bits from re-oxidizing.
Wow this is stunning. I have this mold and am always trying to think of different ways to use it... this is now on my need to do list ❤
I love watching you make the cold casts! They always turn out great, this time included. Thank you Steve 😊!!!
*THAT* is *GORGEOUS,* Steve! Wow, wow! Your client has good taste! Please thank them for letting us see how the products are used for a casting, and thank *you* for sharing with us! 💕😘💕
Steve, I love your videos! You're so creative and make such lovely things. I already have this mold, now I need to get me some metal powder. Thank you so much for all your insights and business tips. Wonderful as always!! 💖👍
thanks so much for this video steve!
Question: Is the resin a polyurethane resin? I was under the impression cold casting could only be done with polyurethane resin which was a factor that was holding me back. Thanks!
Do you not powder the mould with the bronze powder first? I always do this. You save on how much powder you use and it’s a strong concentration of metal on the surface
Ooh, I love it! I'm still learning the ins and outs of resin, so your tips are a big help.
I've never seen this before.. very cool ❤😊
I have years old unmixed resin that's turned urine yellow, but should still work. Need solid, non-transparent projects like this to use it up.
Have you considered throwing that in a rock tumbler for a little while for a more uniform polish? It might lose the artificial antique look, but I'd be curious to see the results.
That is so nice. It would look really good on top of a walking stick/cane.
WOW! this is lovely.. I want to do this in smaller cabochons that so I can wrap them in wire!!!
I haven't tried this technique, but I have to, now that I saw this. That is stunning! ❤
Question: I want to apply a thin layer of slightly soft/bendable resin to a thin metal hooped earring. What kind of resin should I use? Should I dip or brush it on?
Love it Steve! and haha the members names go so fast I can never seer me haha. Loving this technique. fantastic :) and so well explained as always
Interesting, but really confused as to why you didn’t just dust it with copper then add black resin. ❤
Beautiful!
That's awesome!! I've used metal in resin, but never like that. I wouldn't have thought of polishing it. Thanks for the great video!
Hot tip. When showing a dark object avoid using a white background.
Looks good.
cant wait to try this for lids part of some trinket boxes!
That would be a great shift knob!
I'm quite impressed. Thank you for sharing.
Hi Steve, just a quick question, would a liquid metal cleaner make this buff up more brightly? I think you got that to look absolutely gorgeous Steve. Genuinely, it came out so well, and I was very impressed! God bless you and yours Steve. Have a great week!
@@SteveMcDonaldArtsandCrafts thank you Steve.
Hi @Steve McDonald or anyone else who knows, could you tell me please, would I need to use deep pour resin for this mold due to its size? Thanks for your help..
Looks amazing
That is a fantastic technique - thanks for sharing it!
Very clever and Beautiful!
Skull and snake, a universal symbol. The kids really like the skull snake thing.
Hi, i love your projects and tutorials. I was just wondering how you work out out much resin it takes to fill your skull mould? 😊
Nice one 👌. How much heavier does it end up being with the addition of metal powder ?
❤soooo cool!❤ I sure wish I could figure out how to stop my glitter from falling...any tips? Just found your channel and I'm loving it!
wow now thats different, love it
Not all but I notice certain black mica powers always makes resin cure fast. I use these mica powers to get a particular look and they cure so fast, like in 20 to 30 minutes
Loved it before and after ❤
Hi Steve love how this turned out 😍, great technique thanks for sharing ❤️ xx
how do you keep it from flash curing and over heating
Wow Steve that is cool!! Love it and can’t wait to try it!👍❤️
So cool Steve! NGL - It looked like a gigantic dark chocolate skull when you first took it out of the mold. ;) TYSM for sharing!
Now this is interesting! I ❤ it!
This is incredible! Thank you for sharing.
Can you make one of a skull wearing a crown ? And polish up the crown ?
Loved this. But can I ask how you clean the brush after wards, or do you just use another one next time ?
Do you use any kind of demolding products? If so,what do you recommend?
>that's what I love about this technique

Awesome Video steve McDonald
Great video and really informative.... cheers.
That looks really cool! I don't think I've seen that technique done before.
It's been around for a long time. Check out the excellent video on cold casting from 3 years ago on the TheCrafsMan SteadyCraftin channel!
No I have not…. But I am now!!!! That’s amazing love!!!
Is there a material you can use to make the bone look natural? Dental stone maybe?
Could you not use dry sand instead of brass powder?
I love it, it looks amazing.
Very cool
Would the steel wool be usueful for polishing up 3d resin prints?
Interesting! I've always seen the mold coated with powder first.
So with this technique you're also looking to add weight to the figure?
I imagine it would be cost effective to use a cheaper, yet equally as heavy, metal for the inner resin mixture. 🤔
Then again, you may already be doing this but used all bronze metal powder for the video.😆
Thank you for the video!
After watching it again, I notice you do indeed fill the mold with resin that does not have metal powder added.
Sorry!
It wasn't too clear that you had two separate mixes, but I see now!
Great job dude 👍😄👍
That's really cool. I've never seen a technique like this. I'll have to give it a try. My daughters will love this! Thanks for sharing!
Wow that looks amazing!!!
I love your channel! I'm new to resin and I'm learning so much! Thank you.
Can you make that mold like a crystal skull/snake
Crazy results
That is amazing!!!
Can other metal powders be used? Say silver or a silver looking powder?
Yes. I use aluminium for silver, and brass for gold. Copper also turns out nicely. Technically this should work with any metal that is softer than the steel of the steel wool.
I love your videos and have learned sooooo much. I was wondering if you could do a video on notebook covers. I’ve searched for videos and they are very old and don’t give much information. I was wondering if using a UV resin would work since it’s a shallow pour. Would epoxy resin be better? Please help…and thank you for doing these information videos
Steve did a video of the notebook cover. He put a tattoo on it
Thanks!
So amazing I pooped in the freezer!
Do you have videos of the sculpting process? Different channel maybe?
Wow
I’d like to see this project using metal key shavings from the locksmith!
Do they collect their shavings for others to use?
@@WoManticore yes, I think it is just junk to them.
Very Nice 😊
i didnt know jim sterling had an art channel.
Love it!
Where can you sell such items online?
So cool
Where do we buy one at?
how much would you sugest we sell these for steven
For some reason no audio.. not sure if its my youtube or if you just don't have it
Had to refresh it.. that was weird..
I have that same shirt. I think it’s a mossimo
Does this work with uv resin too?
Good ol michaelpowder
HAHA!!! THE BRONZE DOES LOOK GOOD ON THE TEETH!!!! 😍😍😍😍
I thought adding powders, etc into resin , more than 6-10% of the total, it wouldn’t cure?
This isn’t epoxy resin is it? Looking great!
Lovely piece but, I swear everytime I watch one of your videos my Amazon wishlist gets longer XD
So... It's a paper weight?
Camera I don't think it picking it all the way up.
Basically making a resin, skull-shaped Easter egg.
Could you somehow do this with resincrete??
@@SteveMcDonaldArtsandCrafts can't wait to see what you come up with! I feel like the texture would feel really cool
I thought it wasn't advisable to cast that deep with 4 hour resin
💜💜💜💜
Looks like you made two different ones. One black and one bronze.
Hi Steve, creepy but cool looking 👍❤️
👍👍👍❤❤❤
Thumbnail look like you're brushing a White fishes mouth 😂
I'm sure you're getting rich.
You bout ready to bounce? This place is giving me a headache 😂
What type of accent is this ? 😳
You messed up. And waisted all your metal powder and waisted a lot of money. Sorry to be so harsh. I can let you know what you should have done.
