You have to draw very specific cards, in a very specific order, at a very specific moment. This archetipe was made for yugi.

It's ironic that it's the freaking game's flagship monster. Lol!
Or blue eyes white dragon.
What you fail to realize. Dark Magician deck works if you believe in heart of the cards and if you cheat.
That last part caught me off guard
Not "cheat", you just have to confidently make up your own rules
Not cheat just use Egyptian magic to materialize cards on top of the deck it's very different
Thats why kiba is beter
Yessa 😊🤣
The reason why Blue-Eyes decks are so much better than any Dark Magician builds is because it benefits from so many generics Dragon support cards that aren't nessacarily Blue-Eyes cards. Return of the Dragon Lords, Dragon Shrine, Red-Eyes Darkness Metal Dragon, Guardragons, etc. Where with Dark Magician there's not that many good generic spellcaster cards that work with the Dark Magician deck forcing you to mostly play cards that list ''Dark Magician'' in their text. The fact that Eye of Timaeus isn't searchable is a prime example of why the deck doesn't fully work.
Geez maybe you should start a yugioh channel cause that's a good commentary on the decks
It being a vanilla level 7 doesn´t make it easier for generic Spellcasters.
@@DerVasto Right? Also since Blue-Eyes is Level 8 that gives it so much more advantage with cards like Trade-In, the Level 8 Danger! monsters, Rank 8 XYZs, and Level 9 Synchros.
@@infirmatube1556 Especially rank 8-Xyz are just not available to them. I feel 7 is probably the worst level a tribute monster could be in this game, and if you don´t bring something with you, well, ...it´s not worth the cost without really heavy support.
Red-Eyes also struggles, which would not be the case if every Red-Eyes card was level 8-centric. Trade-In in Red-Eyes sounds heavenly.

it feels like Konami is too afraid to make dark magician good, maybe because they don't want that people hate the deck, still it is kinda lame compared to the crazy cards we have out here.
I think it´s more like Konami doesn´t really like Dark Magician, but since it´s the first ever protagonist´s ace monster, they ought to print support.
Maybe they just want to let it become forgotten, kinda.
They could have easily made Endymion support DM, and change DM´s focus towards spell counters, like Red-Eyes did with equips.
But they didn´t, and I think that´s because of that.

"Why nobody has made 'why nobody plays Dark Magician'"
Step 1 of how to "fix" Dark Magician decks:
Make Eye of Timaeus searchable by Circle/Rod/Inheritance/etc.
Also, turn all the traps into spells.
Also fix eternal soul so it doesn't wipe your field when destroyed
@@bradynbrunson6038 or give it some sort of protection against the first effect that would destroy/banish it
Step 2: Print Dark Alternative Magician.
1-Eye of Timaeus searchable.
2-Rod effect on special summons too.
3-New fucking supports for the extra zone. For the love of God, DM has no extra monster zone.
Only this and DM will be so much better.
Dark _Magician_ , the ultimate _Wizard_ who is also a _Spellcaster_ and with age.. will become a _Sage_
If Dark Magician wasn't Yugi's ace monster, DARK Spellcaster decks would have been using "Cosmo Queen" instead.
Does Cosmo queen have the support that Dark Magician has?
@@nickhall7995 No, but what I mean by that is that, back in the early days of Yugioh, players who wanted to play Decks using a strategy revolving around the DARK attribute and/or Spellcaster Type had two option for their LV 7+ Monsters: Dark Magician (with his 2500 ATK and 2100 DEF) and Cosmo Queen (With her 2900 ATK and 2450 DEF).
Since the dawn of the game relied heavily on having cards with higher ATK, and Dark Magician and Cosmo Queen have the exact same Attribute and Type, both being Normal Monsters, both needed two tributes, and Levels didn't really have importance outside of Tribute Summoning at the time. Cosmo Queen would be the more logical choice to use in a deck over Dark Magician due to her having both her ATK and DEF higher then Dark Magician's.
However, since Yugi was the protagonist, and Dark Magician was his Ace card, the show (and naturally, Konami) gave him the support needed to have the full archetype he has today.
@@A88mph bullshit, Dark Magician is the ultimate wizard in terms of attack and defense.
Also until it was reprinted Cosmo Queen was only available in the first round of the Yugioh cards in the McDonald's happy meal in what 2003? Not many people had access to it. Back in that era of the game it was the more viable option. Same Type and Attribute, but more importantly required the same amount of tributes for a better pay out. Cosmo Queen and Yami was enough to beat Blue Eyes back then, DM had to have Yami and a equip ( or just an equip if you had Horn of the Unicorn or Malevolent Nuzzler). I couldn't agree more with you, my friend. Dark Magician is one of the most iconic monsters of the entire history of yu-gi-oh and Konami continues refusing to make this arquetype be at least a viable rogue deck choice.
That's lame and upsets me every single time I think about it.
@@matheusmmariz yes
Maybe, this was the power level intended for both dark magician and blue eyes : not competitif for top table, but just good enough to fight at lower tables.
This is why : both decks are good enough to make people want to come back to yugioh. But once they want to be really competitivee, they buy a second deck.
If you manage to catch your opponent with no monsters on the field, you can special summon Dark Magician and attack for game. I don't see any other archetype that has the ability to do that.

Junk Forward can do that.

@@yourmother5810 It's a reference to a Duel Links ad

I always thought that the flavour texts for Dark Magician, despite its importance in the Yugioh lore, is somewhat lacklustre. It wouldn’t change anything about the competitive aspect of Dark Magician, but this new flavour texts would do his legacy better justice: *“A Magician who is known as the Eternal and Faithful Servant of the Pharaoh. Among Spellcasters he is referred as one of the most important Founders of the Magical Arts.”*
Probably too complex for our little kid minds to comprehend at the time. Also, it spoils (even though every one saw this coming) one of the first series' final season's moments.
Considering this is modern YGO, don't hold your breath. We would probably get. "Wields a cool staff, and a neato pointy hat!"
One of the founders of the mystic arts he is the faithful servant of the pharoah.
Dark Magician sadly has way too many moving parts. It should be a control deck based around spells, and it sort of, kind of, pulls this off. The issue is, is that all of its support is just straight weaker than Blue Eyes and Red Eyes for...no reason. I could live with the extra costs to the spells if they had more power than a similar spell but most of the times its either the same or just weaker.
Take Dark Magic Curtain, its worse than Magician's Veil in pretty much every way except its searchable, and that is the singular reason why people use it. I still use Veil as it lets me summon other stuff when necessary.
Another one is Magician of Dark Illusion. Why doesn't it count as Dark Magician in the GY too? Konami knew that that was a good thing because Dragon Spirit of White was great and that was one of the reasons.
All in all Dark Magician has been shafted...just cuz. And its sad because it would be a lot of fun to play.

Side Deck
10x White Bordered Islands
37x Islands
DM: I’m the ultimate wizard
Endymion: Hold my counter

Dark Magician is the only card in the game that you can summon with no cards on the board and swing for game
now do Red-Eyes and put an end to this "uhhhhh potential" bs once and for all
Do people legit say that? I thought it was a meme.
In Yugioh season 0 , Dark Yugi (Yami Yugi from the DM era) was dueling Seto Kaiba whom had all 3 of his Blue Eyes out, Dark Yugi made the reference that Blue Eyes was known for its Power and Red Eyes was known for its Potential, as he said that Dark Yugi fused Red Eyes with Meteor Dragon to make Meteor B. Dragon whose 3500 attack surpassed Blue Eyes.
@@MikkelBrahmsson I didn't know the backstory (thanks), but I was referring to the real world. Do people really say that "Red-eyes has potential" seriously?

Yo dzeef I'm glad that you're even talking about dark magician because you have some pull in the community and maybe Konami will see this and give our boys something. I'd love to see blue eyes and dark magician topping again
Facts
Blue-eyes Guardragon has been topping. DM has basically never topped.
They did give more support. Again. See White Dragon Abyss and Duel Power. These decks will be getting more support until the end of time. Will it make them competitive? No idea. They've got to make it pretty busted to make DM good. But IMO, Konami would be better off making legacy support for other archetypes that already were good. That way they have something to work with, and hence need to release fewer cards for each archetype, and could give more archetypes a chance of being competitive. But being overpriced anime decks, Konmai makes a lot of money every time it gives DM etc support, so it keeps doing it.
Dark Magician cards look awesome. I'm not saying that just because they're in the anime; they look badass. That doesn't make them good gameplay-wise. I think a lot of people need to realize that.

My build of Dark Magician is obviously the best.
I don't have a Dark Magician deck.
You can easily fix the deck just give us some actual support like
Spell that searches and activates circle or soul from deck when activated. fusion summon a monster that uses dark magican, using material from deck
Field spell that has to be popped before your opponent can target or destory your back row. Once during either player turn when a spellcaster(s) leaves the field apply this effects depending on amount of spellcaster in either graveyard combine
4:Special summon a level 7 or below spellcaster from the grave or deck. They gain the attack of all spellcaster that left the field
7: Banish opponent cards they control equal to the number of spellcaster that left the field
10:Special summon a xyz spellcaster from your extra deck. Attach spellcaster(s) that left the field to it
16:Special summon up to 3 level 7 dark spellcasters from gy, hand and deck
A level 4 monster that is a considered a "dark magican" on the field or gy
And a decent link monster
Eternal soul + Dragon Knight is pretty strong but the summoning Dragon Knight is a pain. Eye of Timaeus not being searchable is one of the things that hurts this deck. Made a DM deck when I got back into yugioh earlier this year thought it was good, started playing more consistent rouge decks and you really do start to see all the short comings of DM decks.

I got frustrated at how much I was losing and switched to Crusadia last year which I am having much more success. Konami has really hamstrung the Dark Magician archetype with lack luster support and pointless drawbacks. Konami needs to make a Level 4 Dark Spellcaster who’s name is always treated as Dark Magician and can search for cars like Eternal Soul, Eye of Timeaus or Circle for the deck to have any traction

To my understanding, DM's isn't that bad. It isn't top tier either. To make it to top tier, you actually need to have a friend who practice sorcery skills, and then that guy die for you and swear to serve you for all eternity with his soul. Then you turn that guy into a card. That way your DM will be the best. Others may play DM as well, but it will never be as good without a that concept.

DM’s issue is, Eternal Soul getting destroyed literally blasts your field. If they made it where only DM himself gets destroyed, the deck would be far better. But yeah. All you have to do to beat a DM deck is to take out a DM player’s backrow. Then it’s super GG for them.

Your video on blue eyes ultimate dragon the other day triggered a bunch of people in a blue eyes group I'm in.
How?
Circle should be able to add any Spellcaster, not just Spell or Traps that list Dark Magician. Kinda dumb it couldn't even add Dark Magician Girl or Magician of Black Chaos/Dark Magician of Chaos at the time...which there should definitely be a lot more support for, for instance even DMG's Berry Magician archtype doesn't even really support DMG, and although Apprentice Illusion is pretty decent, it doesn't even count as a retrain since it isn't named DMG in it's lore, but it should be. Obviously Eye of Timaes should be searchable too...or maybe they should have a Dark Magician Fusion spell searchable from Keeper (Odd-Eyes Fusion is basically the best...sad). Interestingly, True Name combos off of Dark Magical Circle, but it's too bad it doesn't over-ride the God cards' nerfs or 1 turn limit, and isn't searchable since it doesn't list DM in it's lore (it could have a recurring GY effect by revealing DM in hand or something). There literally hasn't been any new cards searchable by Circle since its inception...its like Konami wants DM to fail.
The new Chaos Magican ritual is interesting, but sadly it's 2nd effect only summons Chaos MAX, which doesn't make since. It should summon any DM anywhere, like Dark Magician of Chaos from the hand/deck/GY, which never should have received the nerf in the first place...at least it's lv 7, unlike Lord of Red for Red-Eyes lol. Maybe they'll retrain Magician of Black Chaos or DMG someday?
There's also too many Normal Summons. Rod is obviously the main and only priority card, but there's also Keeper, Choco/Berry Magician, now Manju apparently, Spellbook Magician of Prophecy...all contribute, but aren't worth it. Perhaps they should have had shortcuts to summon themselves, like Dark Grephor has? Not enough GY effects either. Rod's slow effect is the only one, when Blue-Eyes and every other deck has 50 (Navigation doesn't help the user). None of the extra deck monsters also even contribute to field advantage, except for maybe Ebon Illusion Magician, but it's just another DM (Blue-Eyes,REd-Eyes, and DM don't have any Link monsters...while competitive decks have like 5 each). We still don't even have Magi Magi yet. lol Konami thinks that art is too sexual, but just released all the Valkyries. Ok..
All this, and Red-Eyes still gets the short end of the stick lol. Literally nothing even works in that deck other than the shitty Red-Eyes Fusion
For me, the most competitive version of Dark Magician would forego eternal soul and the original DM in favor of focusing on triggering Circle with Magician of Chaos and impcantation support. Not sure how much better this would be, but it sounds much stronger than relying on the traditional Dark Magician package.
Eternal soul is just the best with the fusion DM build. MoC uses external support to help it, I will probably be switching to the ritual version as well. As it seems to function better without relying on the core support bricks.
Those who play Dark Magicians are there for the fun, not the toxicity.
I actually really enjoyed dark magician debunked I thought it was funny
The Dark Magician deck needs a lot of draw power and it seems to do well with flood gate / board wipe tech strategy. Another way to speed up the Dark Magician Deck is to combine it with Pendulum Magicians / Supreme King cards.
This particular mash up gives you a stronger first turn board presence and allows for more flexible and layered counter strategies.
The ebb and flow of the deck can be off putting, but very fun to play.
Been watching your videos for awhile even after taking some breaks from the game. Thank you for your insight on the game and interesting videos. Congrats on 100K subs, well deserved
Konami just hates dark magician the support are average or plain bad compared to blue eyes and eternal soul is just a personal middle finger from konami

I'd still play it in more traditional lists, but I think Demise lists are better right now, and Timaeus is a brick and a half in those.
I came back to the game using Dark Magicians. I wanted to play a competitive regional deck with it, so I bought 3 pot of extravagance/3 phantasmays. The deck archetype needs to be sped up like Blue Eyes in order to be even t3 or t2 above the local level.
The deck needs too much external support and even with duel power, it did not actually empowered the core support. It was just more external support to support adding in 3 more bricks that is a blowout when it works.
There is no silver's cry, sage, maiden, dedicated field spell, alternative dark magician. /Rant
But really there needs to be better internal support for the core build. Dark magic circle is above 70% a blank card because you never actually add a card off it unless you included 20 cards that says "dark magician".
Magicians' Soul, The Dark Magicians, Dragun of Red-Eyes, Secrets of Dark Magic, and Soul Servant would like to know your location
I kinda see why this could be an issue; like clearly you’re not saying “you can’t play this”, you’re just recommending better stuff. But it sucks cuz, well people will misinterpret that. I’m still gonna play my Dark Magician Decks but I also know that I could be doing better.
I am really glad you did this video Dzeef. I am a Dark Magician player here and have really wanted to know your opinion on the competitive sense of the deck in the flaws and what is needed to be better.
When looking at my build I noticed the same things you did in this video and was glad to know I was on the right track. I’ve been trying to find ways to make the deck competitive but I’m not sure how. Maybe it needs a specific engine to help it or probably needs new cards entirely. Blues eyes has cards surrounded to summoning him while Dark Magician has cards to get the support that surrounds him. The cards that actually summon Dark Magician are traps which could be twin twistered on your end phase. It gets problematic to create a decent board on the first turn or have the ability to recover if you get negated.
I know playing a different better deck is probably the better choice, but ever since I got back into the game a few years ago I’ve been actively trying to build a Dark Magician deck and feel I have put so much time and energy to it that it would be a waste to quit. Maybe finding something else is what I need to do.
I don’t hate you at all for making the video I actually applaud you and appreciate the insight of the deck. I appreciate the criticism and would not mind another in depth video about the Dark Magician strategy if you ever wanted to do one.
>stans blue eyes
>dk sucks
SHIT YOURE KAIBA ARENT YOU?!?!?
(Real talk, I'm always surprised at how consistently you address your most casual viewers. Keep up the content dude)
Hey, dzeeff! Non-competitive Dark Magician player here. I lurk on your videos frequently. As a non-competitive, I like that your videos show me why my Fun Decks don't really work in tournaments. I played at locals back in the Xyz era, and got whupped most of the time. I still don't very much like that I can't do well with all my favorite archetypes, but videos like yours help me understand why that is. Love the content; please keep doing what you're doing.
As for my DM build? I chose to supplement the OG with the Pendulum Magicians. It still loses quite frequently to my buddy's more-meta Blue-Eyes, if you were wondering. I beat him more often with Krawlers.
I personally like dark magician and there a lot of cards to has to do with him but I’d prefer Dark magician Chaos since it’s a bit more reliable and leaves more room for cards instead of cards that has to do with dark magician
100K!!! Way to go dzeef!
I might be a dark magician girl stan with magician girl support deck but I don’t think I’d last very long against a meta deck which is fine. I play casually with my family and boyfriend for fun c:
That's exactly true what dzeeff says
The first times i defeated dark magician decks
I was wondering they have so many spells card on the field does'nt do anything
And i got so many wins because of that
I agree that Dark Magician isnt the best, but its still really fun to play. Not only that but there are cards (Keeper of Dragon Magic is one such card) that help you get out Dark Magician the Dragon Knight which protects your spells/traps and he's protected by Eternal Soul because he becomes "Dark Magician" while on field or in graveyard. I actually gave it a shot and it really help my build get out that protection in a more consistent manner to the point where Im thinking of doing a wholr rebuild focusing around just getting him out 1st turn
A former friend of mine (I just don't see him anymore) said that he created a semi-competitive version of Dark Magician where he get's out Dark Magician the Dragon Knight using The Eye of Timaeus, and use Eternal Soul to protect him, while Dragon Knight protects Eternal Soul. I'm not saying the Deck is consistent enough to set up this board turn 1, but if anyone want to try and build the most competitive version of Dark Magician, this is a mandatory card.
Next video: "Commenters don't understand why I don't talk about Dark Magician anymore"
I think Dark Magician is a very solid *casual* choice
I once borrowed someone else's deck at a locals which happened to be a dark magician deck. After being handed the deck and before I even said anything two other people immediately chimed in saying "don't make fun of dark magician decks." So I agree with dzeef's opinion of the fan base.
I’m sure that one day dark magician will get viable support. But that day sure as hell isn’t today.
Something I'd like to see you talk about is decks that want to go second vs decks that want to go first. The reason I ask is that I play a deck that generally likes to go second. Now I know WHY it wants to go second, and that's not what I'm wondering. I'm just wondering if you know of any evidence that says that decks that want to go first are inherently (or even just generally) better or worse than decks that want to go second. Again, I hope to hear your thoughts on this. I don't expect a full video, but even if you just reply with a comment, I'd really appreciate it.
I think that the predominant opinion of any non-meta player is that what they're doing takes skill. I mean, I say it, but I'm well aware that the metagame is no longer about who has the most powerful deck, but how well you read your opponent. Mirror Matches aren't often decided by the flip of a coin - typically if the player wins, then they read their opponent's moves and thought ahead.
The problem is that most meta yugioh strategies fit together so well, that most of the time the optimal move is pretty obvious turn-to-turn. The basic setups can be really impressive, where you're throwing down monsters, and summoning things and destroying things for 2 solid minutes, and it's effortless. Just go up against a Six Samurai deck, let them go first, and play no hand traps, and you'll see what I mean.
And yes, I know, before anyone chews me out and says "six sams aren't meta" - I know that. I'm just trying to show my point that decks can be powerful, and their moves to achieve that power are very easy to see. Many archetype cards fit together so well, that an optimal route to where you want to be is very obvious.
So of course, when a player who has to deal with using cards that are less meta than the competition, it's easy to feel cheated, and start throwing out all these accusations of auto-pilot decks that basically play themselves. It's not entirely true, but there is a grain of truth there. It just becomes distorted because of the sheer gap in power between something like Dark Magician and whatever else people are playing these days at the top tables. Trust me, I played an off-beat deck because I had no money my entire career, and before Master Rule 4 came out and completely obliterated it, and crazy cards like miscellaneousaurus came out and made even the rogue tier strategies more viable than what I had, I did fairly well. But I had no delusions. I knew I was never going to score a win against a Spellbook deck, or against the likes of Shaddols. Yes, this was that long ago that I quit. There is a certain ego about winning against something thought to be more powerful than what you're playing though. So, this is why I think these statements don't just apply to Dark Magician players... it's basically for most people that are competitively-minded, but cannot access a more powerful deck.
