    I was born and raised in Oakland. It’s always been rough, however the homeless population is out of control. My guess is that, in addition to skyrocketing rents, a large percentage are either mentally ill, addicted to drugs, or former inmates (or a combination of all three), with severely limited resources. What happened to all the men (and women) who got caught up in the crack epidemic of the 80’s and 90’s? They didn’t just disappear. 🤷🏽‍♀️

      Jonny O My guess is that A LOT of the homeless you see today were probably involved in the drug wars of the 1980’s and 1990’s. I work in the prison system and I always wonder what our inmates lives are going to be like when they’re released. Some will go in to lead productive lives and be reunited with their families. But others . . . who knows where they’ll end up🤷🏽‍♀️

They often travel two hours to work because homes 70 miles away are the only ones they can afford. Wealth disparity is increasing. The middle class where the economy is booming is being driven away. Keeping minimum wage down keeps the prices of burgers down. Giving the wealthy tax breaks, shoots home prices sky high, leaving middle class and working class out of the housing market. Affordable homes or affordable burgers? 🤦🏻‍♂️

  • @AlexHand
    @AlexHand Před 4 lety +29

    I lived there for six years, including when you filmed this. Recently relocated to TX. I had many rehearsals with jazz groups in these neighborhoods you're showing. When people say the city should clean this up (they are right), what they don't understand is the problem isn't the garbage or the shabby paint jobs. It's the people who are there. You can clean these neighborhoods up, knock down the slums and put in condos that cost $4000/mo to rent, which is what has already happened, but the characters that leave the garbage, break into cars and do the graffiti don't disappear and it just ends up being a super expensive ghetto. Some of it is mental illness, some addiction, some ex-gang members who spent their life in crime and now don't know anything else. The saddest part is when you meet someone with a college degree living in those tents, because they did it right and the system still failed them. I saw homeless guys watching an iPad under a bridge, laying on cardboard, and thought they stole it, but then realized a used iPad is $150 which doesn't even cover rent for a week in the worst part of Oakland. The real question is, why don't these people leave and go start a life somewhere more affordable? I eventually did. There's a gravity that keeps people in the city, for fear of missing out or thinking that's the place to be. Clearly it's not, but you're hypnotized when you're there, and I think homeless zombies, wealthy tech workers and artists all feel that.

    Canadian kid here.
    When I was 18, my grandmother decided it would be fantastic to visit San Francisco for a week, joining the throngs of tourists that mob the central portion of the world-class city while my aunt took part in a philosophical scholar conference. Granny loves to save money and we ended up in a low budget motel in Oakland, next to a Mary Brown's and a freeway bridge. We arrived to our motel on the last city bus of the night, first thing we noticed was a white dude pissing all over the bus stop next to the corner hustler. I've done an unfair amount of drugs at this point, and was excited to score chiva(?) black tar heroin.
    That I did, only a few steps into the Tenderloin while wandering on my own.
    Walking around during the daylight was fine. Got myself some aluminum foil, a lighter and cigarettes, somehow. Being so excited for this tempting bliss I went straight to work before the folks came back home. That little tied up plastic bag was burning a hole in my pocket during the way back to the motel.
    Upon getting the chance; I headed out at night with my newfound gear to find a suitable crook to chase the dragon. Trying it in the washroom led to hastily stuffed pockets due to unfortunate timing. I approach the freeway bridge.
    If I thought the other side was sketchy, this nailed it. First thing I walk past beyond the bridge was a gentleman breaking into a car. A rough fellow asking for a smoke. Thugs on the curb drinking from brown paper bags. Lots of shouting, garbage and sweet graffiti. Not wanting to venture any farther, I decide a little nook space behind a couple car shop dumpsters would suffice.
    I tried getting high. Not really knowing was I was doing; it didn't deliver the promised effect. Sucked. But the funny part was having a concerned thug pull up to a homie on the other side of my dumpster protection to ream him out on his usage of smack.
    Went for years without trying heroin again. Having scored an oz and a half of brown brick early this year sent me into a spiral that led to smoking fentanyl, kicking it, entering rehab tomorrow.
    This post barely has to do with the video but damn such good memories of beyond-the-bridge Oakland. Cheers
