I was born and raised in Oakland. It’s always been rough, however the homeless population is out of control. My guess is that, in addition to skyrocketing rents, a large percentage are either mentally ill, addicted to drugs, or former inmates (or a combination of all three), with severely limited resources. What happened to all the men (and women) who got caught up in the crack epidemic of the 80’s and 90’s? They didn’t just disappear. 🤷🏽♀️
Same. It's feeling like the crack days of the 80s. All around my job is homeless camps. You can't go to a store without someone strung asking for money.
Jonny O My guess is that A LOT of the homeless you see today were probably involved in the drug wars of the 1980’s and 1990’s. I work in the prison system and I always wonder what our inmates lives are going to be like when they’re released. Some will go in to lead productive lives and be reunited with their families. But others . . . who knows where they’ll end up🤷🏽♀️
@@missd1577 Astute observation. I think a lot of these people were hanging on at the fringes and the rising rents pushed them over the edge into homelessness. They overwhelmed the existing social services.
I work for a JC and we deal with the homeless all the time. They'll often take a gym class so they have a place to shower and get access to the computer labs. Their campers and junk collection vehicles are everywhere.
Oakland is changing though, because its close to San Jose and San Francisco. Youre either poor or rich, theirs no middle class, unless you bought your house in 1989

The east side of LA looks just as bad if not worst than Oakland. Y’all just don’t understand how fast the city changes and how the murder rate works as well.
Its difference between a place that looks bad versus a place with bad people. L.A. people worse but doesnt look as bad as oakland
Most of the dudes from Detroit i know personally are cool and laid back chill. Alot of ppl from the D dont really fuck with you unless you so happen to be a person someone thinks they can rob but thats everywhere. Wow. As someone who grew up in NYC and currently lives in Baltimore, I've always felt that east coast hoods are indefinitely some of the grimiest in the country, at least by looks. West coast hoods tend to not *look* that bad usually, even though crime and drugs may be rampant. But man, this video just changed that perception for me. The fucking tent cities and endless dumping of garbage.. just fucking wow. Never seen Cali looking like this.
It looks like this nearly all over now. Anywhere that isn't populated by techies looks like this. You can see this shit all along the BART route. The Tenderloin in SF genuinely looks like Brazil, no joke. I don't know how anyone can even say the US is the greatest country on Earth with a straight face anymore. As a native to California it's been depressing watching it turn into dystopia just as I came of age. I'm 23 and I can't imagine a future at all in this shithole.
It's one of the many parts of Cali that are not exposed in the media. This is why Cali cats are pissed. Saying our tax dollars, raising tax are going to something like homeless. We wonder why the the problem gets worse yet they charge us for more tax.
The east side of LA looks just like this if anything even worst but the whole city is being torn down.
I lived in Oakland most of my life and now Baltimore. I feel safer in Baltimore than in Oakland
Smh I love my city but the homeless crisis is out of control.
In new york these ppl have no chance , they kill them and most of other states they don't have the freedom they find in California besides the nice weather , that's why california have this homeless crisis , most of these junkies are not from California some of them not even Americans citizens , I know everything is overpriced in California but there's plenty of work , ppl that comes from another states , don't wanna work and pay hundreds or thousands of dollars in rent because they find it way too much compared from where they come from , and some idiots just moved here because is easier for them to get drugs
it's mental health not housing. Reagan shut down the mental asylums and they either end up in jail or right there
It gets worse on the railroad tracks , what he’s showing ain’t nothing

Median price home in Oakland? $750,000. The rich in Northern California is skyrocketing. Blue collar workers making $100,000 can't afford to live in the area. They often travel two hours to work because homes 70 miles away are the only ones they can afford. Wealth disparity is increasing. The middle class where the economy is booming is being driven away. Keeping minimum wage down keeps the prices of burgers down. Giving the wealthy tax breaks, shoots home prices sky high, leaving middle class and working class out of the housing market. Affordable homes or affordable burgers? 🤦🏻♂️
I seen a interview with a lady that lived in northern Cali and she had to commute 4-5 hours to work and back home everyday.
California is the only state I been to where because the city is building new homes across the street from the projects they will repaint the projects so they blend in and shit lol....insane!

East Oakland starts @ 6:37
Thank you for driving through my hometown. I moved from east oakland when i was 15. Im 33 now and I've been back to the east and west a few times but it's so sad to see all of the homeless people and all the trashy streets.
I lived there for six years, including when you filmed this. Recently relocated to TX. I had many rehearsals with jazz groups in these neighborhoods you're showing. When people say the city should clean this up (they are right), what they don't understand is the problem isn't the garbage or the shabby paint jobs. It's the people who are there. You can clean these neighborhoods up, knock down the slums and put in condos that cost $4000/mo to rent, which is what has already happened, but the characters that leave the garbage, break into cars and do the graffiti don't disappear and it just ends up being a super expensive ghetto. Some of it is mental illness, some addiction, some ex-gang members who spent their life in crime and now don't know anything else. The saddest part is when you meet someone with a college degree living in those tents, because they did it right and the system still failed them. I saw homeless guys watching an iPad under a bridge, laying on cardboard, and thought they stole it, but then realized a used iPad is $150 which doesn't even cover rent for a week in the worst part of Oakland. The real question is, why don't these people leave and go start a life somewhere more affordable? I eventually did. There's a gravity that keeps people in the city, for fear of missing out or thinking that's the place to be. Clearly it's not, but you're hypnotized when you're there, and I think homeless zombies, wealthy tech workers and artists all feel that.
I wish Charlie couldve rode up MacArthur and Bancroft when he was in the east.

When you have greedy politicians it starts from the top and you're right the richest country in the world to not look like this but greed and cutting taxes for the rich will do it when the politicians are pocketing most taxpayers money anyway
Why should they do anything?. Building low income housing would compete with existing housing and make it harder to get excessive rents. The powers that pay the politicians don't want then to find housing for these people. It is capitalism at its ugliness.

When I was 18, my grandmother decided it would be fantastic to visit San Francisco for a week, joining the throngs of tourists that mob the central portion of the world-class city while my aunt took part in a philosophical scholar conference. Granny loves to save money and we ended up in a low budget motel in Oakland, next to a Mary Brown's and a freeway bridge. We arrived to our motel on the last city bus of the night, first thing we noticed was a white dude pissing all over the bus stop next to the corner hustler. I've done an unfair amount of drugs at this point, and was excited to score chiva(?) black tar heroin.
That I did, only a few steps into the Tenderloin while wandering on my own.
Walking around during the daylight was fine. Got myself some aluminum foil, a lighter and cigarettes, somehow. Being so excited for this tempting bliss I went straight to work before the folks came back home. That little tied up plastic bag was burning a hole in my pocket during the way back to the motel.
Upon getting the chance; I headed out at night with my newfound gear to find a suitable crook to chase the dragon. Trying it in the washroom led to hastily stuffed pockets due to unfortunate timing. I approach the freeway bridge.
If I thought the other side was sketchy, this nailed it. First thing I walk past beyond the bridge was a gentleman breaking into a car. A rough fellow asking for a smoke. Thugs on the curb drinking from brown paper bags. Lots of shouting, garbage and sweet graffiti. Not wanting to venture any farther, I decide a little nook space behind a couple car shop dumpsters would suffice.
I tried getting high. Not really knowing was I was doing; it didn't deliver the promised effect. Sucked. But the funny part was having a concerned thug pull up to a homie on the other side of my dumpster protection to ream him out on his usage of smack.
Went for years without trying heroin again. Having scored an oz and a half of brown brick early this year sent me into a spiral that led to smoking fentanyl, kicking it, entering rehab tomorrow.
This post barely has to do with the video but damn such good memories of beyond-the-bridge Oakland. Cheers

Yo Charlie313, you have put quite a few thousand miles on that truck!
I haven't worked in Oakland for about 12 years now. Sad to see how much worse the homeless situation is.
The homeless crisis in the san Francisco/ bay area is out of control 😭 the worst thing is it's so expensive to live here. It's crazy. I'm beginning to think its not worth it.
Blow the Whistle (on this dysfunction)
I will move to Oakland, open a store that only sells cans of spray paint, make a million dollars in less than a month, close the store and move.
My boy really came to da town Oakland lol love u bruh thanks for showing out trenches but u missed a lot thoe lol
I like how u drive 2da "citi-style " in each city ur in, it shows your professionalbility and driving appropriateness.
Wow, I think this is the visually scariest city Charlie has ever driven through.
The scariest cities ive seen are chicago,st. Louis ,detroit , watts and baltimore
You think so? The channel holder's act is lame. He is one of many govt operatives on the State's payroll who pretends to be a civilian with a video camera (as are the channel holders who record cops all day long and do the '1st amendment audit' videos). With that, the least he could have done was to roll up to a drug dealer, roll the window down, and pretend to be a prospective buyer.
@#BAGLIFE MIKE yeah on the West Coast oakland is one of the more "hoodish" cities still has a reputation for high crime but its not as bad as it was back in the 90s/early 2000s. Its still one of the cities in north cali where some gangs are still active to this day even more so than in detroit where gangs are all about drugs and money not so much turf
Keep up it Charlie! You are exposing the cesspit that has become the USA.
You just made my day... I requested this
lmao Imagine being a delivery driver and having to deliver to one of these apartments
I love my city Oakland, Ca but it’s getting worse out there it’s crazy.
And in the biggest economy within the country with the world's biggest economy...
@@Eevee141 I'm 40 years old... The first time I heard Reagan say 'trickle down economics' as a child in the 1980s was the moment I woke up to the fact that I would never take politics seriously
When we lived in LA we had a huge front and back yard my mom use to tell us we are poor but not dirty so my brothers had to get up early every weekend to clean the yard. We lived walking distance from Olvera St. Those houses were bought by the county and were torn down that was in 1960. Now I have a big back yard and I keep it clean too.
Oakland don't got big front yards like SoCal. It's more urban like San Francisco in some parts
This makes me cry all those homeless people sleeping in tents.
West Oakland and the avenues are the worst in Oakland. Oakland hills are pretty nice though.
I really miss my city but this just saddens me seems like nothing’s really changed..
Looks like the entire city is the hood,Hey charlie,I love what do,TRULY AMAZING,Thanks😊
I grew up in Oakland. It is a shame what happened to a once beautiful and prosperous city. I have hope that it will get better. I already see many signs of this although it will take years to get back to what it once was. Corrupt leadership has caused this.
Should drive through east side san jose. Start off at the top of the hill with the mansions, then make your way down to story and mclaughlin with the tents.
Ezale Nsmokey it’s a few out there. Foxdale, Avalani, McKee & white, alum rock & white, East Hills
I go to Oakland almost every weekend for a flea market, lakes, hiking. Never had an issue even driving at night. But are there any streets I should avoid driving on? Never really seemed that bad though.
This is where I’m from , rip my auntie shalonda who just passed out here ...
One my favorite restaurants in Oakland now closes at 9 pm everyday. Where in the country do high-end restaurants make last call at 8:30 pm? Crime rate too high. Raiders left, Warriors left, A's about to leave. I feel like the crack epidemic is about to jump off like it did in the 80's . There's nothing left to stop it. It looks like addiction is the only hustle.
My section Deep East Oakland its really real ! right on for making your way to The Town Cbo.
It is NOT their fault that they are homeless! High rents, low wages, mental illness, by the grace of god go I !!!
Good job, bro. I like your video!
😐😑 u missed a whole lot of oakland my friend. Js
I grew up in Oakland. Every time I go back to visit I get anxiety. It’s really a war zone. Everybody should leave

When will they fix this neighborhood up if Oakland, is supposed to be doing well with it's construction buildings?
You need to tell people you are coming to their City and where is the Deep part of the hood and their City some places have more than one when you came 2 the city of Oakland you did not even hit the surface you were in North and West Oakland you needed to come East Oakland from International on Fruitvale all the way to a 108 MacArthur 2 108th and Bancroft that is the heart of it East Oakland👌🏽😎
