Our today’s interviewee:
Andrzej Mularczyk (born in 1930 in Warsaw), a writer, screenwriter, author of radio plays. Following the October 1956 thaw, the communist oppression relaxed slightly and creators gained more artistic freedom. The ban on certain themes was lifted, but these subjects remained subject to censorship. Andrzej Mularczyk began to write about individuals who were being released from prisons, where they had been detained as enemies of the communist regime. He published the books "Czyim ja żyłem życiem" [Whose Life I Lived], "Gwiazdy w kałużach" [The Stars in Puddles] and "Co się komu śni" [Dreams We Have], but he had to fight with the censors over many of his choices. He described many moving stories: the director Andrzej Wajda wanted to turn one of them into a film, but this proved impossible, despite the 1956 thaw. Nevertheless, Mularczyk began his film career. In our interview he talks about writing the script to "Sami swoi" [All Friends Here] and the popular TV series "Dom" [The House]. More recently, he participated in the creation of "Katyn" and "Powidoki" [Afterimage] directed by Andrzej Wajda. Many of the stories depicted by Andrzej Mularczyk in the past continue in unexpected ways years later. In the 1950s, a young man who wrote a letter to the editorial board of a newspaper, in which he threatened to commit suicide. In a way, he owed he life to Mularczyk, who responded to his desperate letter by setting up a meeting and writing a reportage about the man's history. "The Big Sun" (his pseudonym) never forgot about it, and many years later he reconnected with Andrzej Mularczyk after becoming a millionaire in the US. Andrzej Mularczyk talks about the advantage that non-fiction literature has over fiction: true stories are never over as long as their characters continue to live.

Jak bardzo mi brak tak pięknych charakterów w dzisiejszych czasach

Serial "Dom" to jest polska epopea, nasza najnowsza (choć już nie całkiem najnowsza, niestety) historia pokazana poprzez indywidualne losy w świetnie "zrobionym" serialu. Myślę, że podobnie, jak najważniejsze pozycje literatury narodowej, tak i ten serial powinien znaleźć się w każdym polskim domu. U mnie jest, na razie nie rozpakowany, bo na szczęście TV powtarza go od czasu do czasu, ale nigdy nie wiadomo, co bedzie za kilka lat. A komedie! Kto inny potrafi tak ciepło, z taka miłością do ludzi pokazać ich słabości i wady. I tylko chciałbym, żeby w jednym się Pan Andrzej Mularczyk mylił: w pesymistycznym spojrzeniu na historyczne przemiany, które dzieją się obok nas. Obserwując je trudno nie podzielać jego obaw, ale historia dokonuje czasem nieprzewidzianych zwrotów.
