  • In our Ryuha style, we handle the katana, the Jō staff, the Tamagusari chain ball, and the Kama sickles. So today, Seki sensei, the 22nd headmaster of Asayama Ichiden Ryu with 400 years of history, will introduce our fighting techniques with two Kama sickles. Other Ryuha styles fight with a single Kama, but fighting with two is quite rare. Please watch this video until the end to discover the techniques that can only be done with two Kama sickles.

That is so cool, I have been using Kamas since I was very young, around 8/9. My first weapons that I got to getting a good grasp on, and have become my "favorite and specialty"" weapon.
I have recently paused on using the kamas after around 10/11 years of using them to focus on Katana, I looked videos up on the XMA, to some of the 90s "Black Belt" DVDs from Century (Jimmy Pham, Tyler Weaver, and Mike Chaturantabut to name a few), and some Shinnich Chiba's (Kage No Gundan) with Hiroyuki Sanada using them in the 3rd or 4th season.
Also having 2 instructors in my martial arts system that used them, 1 of them used standard kama, and the other used Rope (Flying) Kama. And in that same system we have a 4th degree black belt form that uses the Rope (Flying) Kama.
Its kind of funny as to how this became "full circle". The Kamas I use are from Buki Yuushuu (Viper Kamas) and they have a dagger at the end. This video makes me want to pick them up again!

The Native American and Colonial frontiersmen developed a tomahawk and knife fighting technique, and the sickle movements are similar to some of the tomahawk movements, where you used the beard of the axe to trap or pin the attacker or weapon before countering with the other hand.

Liked far more than I first remember.
However, as I watched the first episode.
I was struck by the fact that Amadimaru (Whom might be based on Miyamoto Musashi) is the only 'mainstream Anime character' from Nara period or more accurately before the Edo Period.
Especially overseas where the original series aired on Kids TV Network in the early 2000's.
So my question is, how intentional is this? Did very few stories from the Nara period survive?
And are Japanese People bothered by the lack of historical variety in settings or periods?
Increasingly so, as 'During the Edo period' has become a meme. Amongst this new wave English Speaking Japanese content creators.
Furthermore. Much of what Seki-Sensei has taught us in his videos and superb demonstrations.
Is dependent on the opponent lacking armour or a shield.
So how would a normal Samurai adapt to an opponent with armoured gauntlets? Or blade resistant gloves?
(chainmail, for lack of a better word)
The enemy word be able to grab your Katana from you, most likely with the non-dominate hand.
And run you through with a Blade of their own.
    Thank you very much.
For all your continuous hard work and dedication.

Why aren't complete styles popular in Japanese martial arts? I mean to ask, why don't traditional RyuHa teach Karate, Judo, Jujitsu, Kobudo, etc, all in a Unified style? Why are Japanese Martial Arts so specific and specialized? Thank you~

I love this stuff…but will people ever learn…the swordsman will never reach his opponent as he’s outta range when he strikes…it’s same in all martial arts now…we’ve lost realism we always attack short…making it easier to defend
