- Calving's in full swing now and the calves are coming in thick and fast.
We haven't had the best start as we have had to get the vet out twice now in two days, and both times its been Emma.
She's also just competed in the highly prestigious Young Farmer Of The Year contest and won so a massive congratulations to her!!

Hey I’m Andrew The Once A Day Farmer, I farm alongside my father on my family dairy farm in New Zealand.
Our Dairy system is quite unique as we only milk our 320 jersey cows Once A Day (hence the name), and they stay outside on grass for 365 days of the year!!

Fascinating video, Andrew. 50 years ago I intended to become a vet and thru life circumstances and the way University Entrance was in those days I was told there was no use trying to enter Uni as a girl because only male students made it thru. I have been regretful of my decision to not push thru and try anyway to enter Massey Uni all those years ago. I watched this video with Emma and still feel that sadness that I didn’t become a vet.
That’s such a shame Hillary! I don’t know exact figures but it seems like all we get is female vets at our local one now 🤷
Congrats Emma from Canada
Congratulations Emma.
Good luck with the rest of your calving season. 😊
And she got to wear the cloak of knowledge! Congrats Emma. Onya!
Absolutely fantastic news about Emma many congratulations to her
Really hope the poorly coo pulls through 😢
Soon be time to get the old beard trimmed right back 😂😂
Great video Andrew x
Came across on your channel and I do love to watch it.
Thanks
Nice one Andrew, great video.
I love your logic for what calves to keep, makes perfect since.
Congratulations Emma,outstanding achievement.
I really hope your cow made it 🤞🏼🍀
Sounds like alot is going on. Congratulations to Emma
Nice I wish you a good day
What a beautiful morning with your cows now calving.
Great work, sir, on the vid..... stay safe 🏴
Some nice weather for farming.
Dont forget to order your Nitrogen product from Ballance before the end of July to receive the feild days discount, from there you can uplift anytime till sep 30th 😊
Congratulations Emma I listened to your interview on talkback - yes genetic gain is really important - less cow over time with the same amount of productions from a smaller herd - it does take many years to achieve
And so it all begins again, thanks Andrew
Good on you Emma, congratulations.
Congratulations Emma, Good luck with the rest of the calving Andrew, I see it every year we get a few problems at the start and then all is fine.
I was in Timaru doing the junior young farmer competition, so I got to watch Emma doing the competition, and it was pretty cool to see her do so well.
That’s awesome howd you go?
@TheOnceADayFarmer 6th, so will hopefully go off that next year.
Congratulations
Well done Emma.
I do love how a farmer and vet talk about the worst part of their job, it's live, it's death, look one died but there 99 over there alive, 99%happy, my vet last year was calving a cow,I think it's gone I think it's gone ,calf out it's alive ,my hero .thanks Willy
Good stuff Emma, what a woman!
Hi can you make a calving assistance video with vet Emma?
Great video
Hope that cows recovering ?
nice to see a good run of heifer calves but I've seen on your stories today you've had 9 bull calves on the trot now so it didn't last
Congratulations to Emma great achievement
What a great video
Your lucky, were not allowed to use marbocyl on dairy cows anymore 😉, another great video 👍
Gidday Andrew, again, another great video. Congratulations to Emma. You two have now certainly changed my view of a crock pot. 😅😮😮 Regards Pete R
😂👍
Hello andrew. Thanks for the video..i hope the sick cow pulls through. Sending positive vibes from the uk.
Hi Andrew do you keep the heifer calves from the 2 year old cows.
No because we just run stock bulls over them, but next year we will since we’re going to ai them
Lucky you being able to use Marbocyl. Banned here in the UK. Classed as a critically important antibiotic. Nothing as good to replace it.
To be fair it’s the first time I’ve used it in 6 years 🤷
Is there a market for surplus heifer calves straight off the cow?
Don’t think my herds good enough yet, but hopefully going forward as the cows get better so will the offspring and then there might be
There are few things more valuable to a dairy farmer than a good vet. Here in America large animal vets are getting scarce. More vets are doing pets, more money in it and better working conditions. Do you have anyone who would buy your unwanted heifer calves to raise for replacements?
I don’t as of now, but hopefully as the herd gets better the calves will to do maybe I will find a market for them in the future
Hi Andrew. Enjoy watching your videos. How many replacement heifers are you keeping each year?
Planning on keeping 65 this year
Geez , hows the grass situation, always looks like you got grass on the video, we are short up here, it just disappeared 🤷♂️
It’s deceiving, I’ve got bugger all to be honest, just so May wet paddocks that aren’t recovering unfortunately
Those selection decisions are important. At what age will you cull those calves? Will they go to an auction or just go for meat?
They will go for meet
Look at those utters. So big
What do you do with the newborn bull calves?
They go to another shed and get colostrum as well
@@TheOnceADayFarmer After that where are they shipped?
So cool to finally see a Woman win the NZ Young Farmer of the Year, maybe that might encourage other Females to enter the Young Farmer of the Year.
Hopefully 🤞
How you finding the collars for notifications on calving?
It’s only just been updated but I need to catch up with Blake to run me through it.
Where do you keep the Bobby calf’s until they go on the track
In one of the old sheds
Did that broken colored open cow jump you when she was walking behind you? LOL I thought I saw that coming.
Haha looked like it aye!
Why does Steve milk your cows through the winter? Andrew
Cheers Neil
He calves his cows in the autumn and milks through the winter as there’s bit of a premium price for winter milk
عشبة المرة تعالج الالتهاب الرئوي الحاد
Hopefully that cow dosnt have a lda. She may also be dirty can treat with a oxytet antibiotic
Vet young farmer of the year and mum , sort of makes a guy feel a bit inadequate hu? Only jokin Andrew you’re doing a great job, best of luck with the rest of the calving. I wouldn’t hold out to much hope for the old girl with the pneumonia though she might live but is unlikely to get into milk again.
Great stuff Emma, congratulations.
Wish that the hole gender block BS in all skills and trade would just be a thing of the past. So much skill gone to waste because of stereotype thinking, and power domination battles for ages.
I'm a Electrical contractor, and some of the best skilled ones I have worked with are women.
You guys can still use Marbocyl we can't for human antibiotics resistance reasons yet New Zealand can export to the EU another example of double standard bureaucracy we have to deal with as farmer's in the EU, not have a go at you Andrew or new Zealand farmer's but at the bureaucracy which is getting worse every year here in Ireland, EU
Interesting! To be fair it’s the only time I’ve used it in the 6 years since ive been home 🤷
Can we have a report on the sexed semen, number A.I ed ,in calf, heifers bulls ,use it again or not ,dad's take
Was an epic failure last mating to be honest, think I used 30 straws and think maybe 5 held.
Frozen sexed stuff just didn’t work for me so not going back to it
@TheOnceADayFarmer yeah I am not a believer in it ,can I ask what are you doing with the bull calves (if you don't want to answer that is OK )we here in Ireland have to keep live for 8 weeks costing around 300 euros and after the 8 weeks ???? Who knows
