Riding Amtrak's AutoTrain From Sanford, FL to Lorton, VA--May 11-12, 2014

- My wife and I recently took a road trip through 15 states, which afforded us unlimited opportunities to railfan. As part of the trip, we took the Autotrain from Sanford, FL to Lorton, VA. It was really nice to let them do that segment of the driving up Interstate 95, which has earned a reputation for traffic gridlock. At both Auto Train stations, I had the opportunity to do some railfanning. The personnel at both stations are very railfan friendly!! We see here the loading and unloading of vehicles, as well as the movement of the switcher, AMTK 515, which is a Dash 8 as it prepares to break up the incoming Train #53, and then put together our train, Train #52. We also see the southbound Train #53 pulling into the Sanford, FL station, and later our train, Train #52 pulling into the boarding area prior to our boarding. We also enjoy some of the scenery along the way to Lorton, VA. Enjoy!!

Both trains are supposed to leave at 4 PM and meet at the halfway point-Florence, SC- around Midnight!

+James Valenti If my memory serves me correctly, it costs around $1750.00 for a car and 3 adults, each over 65 years of age.
Bill Acord Holy crap...I mean I would be traveling alone..but how exactly do the fees work? Do they charge a separate fare for your car or does the round trip fare for the car include an adult ticket?
+James Valenti The round trip fare includes both the car and the adult tickets...only those who are taking a car along can ride this train
