    I like your approach. I have been a woodturner for many years and have only made one pen! When getting out of my car in a parking lot, on the ground was a Bic pen someone had stepped on or driven over. The plastic was broken but the refill good so that became my one and only pen!

      Yes it's more assembling and finishing than turning but can be rewarding all the same.

      wood turning is like a drug. better make something nice for the wife etc. because you maybe be turning on your date night but honey i forgot the lathe was talking to me after being a machinist's welder for 30yrs and getting my 1st wood lathe new to turning but more excited after work hear the lathe run better than going to the bar or mowing the grass. fyfi a chain saw lives in my truck locked cocked and ready for a tree down across the road free wood. This is mental illness if you start wood turning. i LOVE IT

    wow. Great video. I love that you show pictures of the tools where you can buy it from. I am thinking to buy that lathe. I thing you could upgrade your camera as the video quality is a bit poor.

    I'm new to all this. Great video. Would you recommend the carbide tip tools rather than the traditional ones?

    • @DerekBailey-jc7rk
      @DerekBailey-jc7rk  Před 3 měsíci

      Carbide tipped tools require less skill to use and create immediate results & dont need sharpening (which is another skill), although on soft woods they leave a poor finish. They are not kind to very thin wood if fine detail shapes are required. They scrape the wood not slice it as do traditional tools. Traditional tools require more skill but are more satisfying to use when you've aquired the skill.
      I hope that helps.

    I would like tow know what speed you use for each applications

    • @DerekBailey-jc7rk
      @DerekBailey-jc7rk  Před 3 měsíci

      That's a difficult question as there is no digital speed readout on the lathe. For a general rule of thumb however, when drilling I recommend 700 rpm to 1000 rpm for drilling and 2000 rpm for turning with the carbide tipped tools. Sanding the same speed and max speed for buffing the finish.

      For Turning sound timber divide 9000 by the diameter in inches. For tricky timber divide 6000 by the diameter in inches ie:- 6000/6 inches Dia = 1000 rpm. Hope that helps.

    Sharpen lathe tools

    • @DerekBailey-jc7rk
      @DerekBailey-jc7rk  Před měsícem +1

      Very difficult to sharpen carbide insert tools. A diamond grinding wheel is needed. The tools I'm using are practically new, but if worn I can simply rotate the tip to a different cutting edge.

    Interesting . Would get a machine with No. 2 mores taper. More common size.

      Well yes you can turn small on a big lathe but not big on a small lathe.
      All depends on your work space and turning ambitions.
      Record Power have a good range of small Morse 2 lathes with 5 year warranty.
