    Hey Everyone! I've been looking at my sad old PODHD pro for a while now, thinking to myself, is this thing still worth using? For some reason I can't seem to let it go, but I also never use it anymore either! Let me know what you think, is it time to let it go?

    The amount of detail and the quality of the midrange of the AxeFX are astonishing, but I think the Pod sits incredibly well in the mix. They are both excellent units, and I like how the Pod, despite its age, is still capable of such good performance

      Just use the Two Notes Wall of Sound or two notes torpedo with your pod to change the cab irs I currently do this and it sounds better than any axe I played. That's the only thing holding back the pods are the stock Cab IRs.

    They both sounded really good. We are so spoiled today. We have so much great sounding gear at every price point. When I started playing it cost a lot of money to buy a real amp and a bunch of pedals then hoped you got the ones you liked and could figure it out. You didn't just press a few buttons and change it; you spent a lot of money. We didn't have Google to show us what to do.

    I've got a pod HD500, which is the floor version of the rack one. I use it on stage and I don't feel the need to upgrade my gear. For sure the Axe FX sounds better (newer technology of modeling, better converters and so on), but in my opinion the POD has still something to say nowdays. It's all about tweaking! If you spend the time to tweak and experiment, you can really create kickass sounds with it.

      @@TaylorDanley How about a video utilising the extra tools of the pod to bring it closer to the external IR? I mean, it has like a slew of eq modules, parametric, studio, graphich etc and a very decent overall post eq (global in the output section). AND, something rarely used, the studio compressor model can be put after the chain to punch even more. The downside is prone to feedback if very loud obviously (the compressor doing its work...) but man the difference it makes in the mix is worth experiment it.
      They are oh so close with the same IR obviously. What do you expect when you essentially apply a 2000 spot eq on both...1700 worth of difference? Not in the very slight. But live is the ultimate judge.

    They both sound really good in their respective elements honestly.
    The pod tone has a good scooped type of metal sound while the axe fx has the mid boost quality to it.
    It's really just preference from there. Both have good quality as long as you use a great IR and or really good cab 👍

    • @minkorrh
      @minkorrh Před rokem

      That could be solved with a good eq....they aren't far off but yes, the AxeFX has way more mids. This is probably even solvable in the boxes themselves, but maybe hes just comparing raw patches of amps ? I dunno

  • @leavingsoulsBO
    @leavingsoulsBO Před 4 lety +3

    As a Pod HD500x user, I can say there is a value mostly for the price. I got into it late because for years I was more than used to my pod X3 presets until it ultimately died; and I managed to get two of those as b stock from a store with 500€, around the same i recently paid for the HX Stomp I use for recordings, and having a spare is always good. As for sound it requires some tinkering; even compared to my past Line 6 experiences, I found myself spending more time and fx blocks on EQ with high gain models to get it to work the way I wanted it to. As for the IRs yes, Line 6 rarely gets them right but I managed to get better results doing some dual cab presets (thanks to a rather comprehensive guide I found online) rather than using an external IR loader. It might just be me but something doesn't work right with the pre Helix modelling they did and external IRs.
    Besides the price, I feel it's a well built unit compared to past ones, the amp and fx selection isn't huge but covers pretty much anything with good results, preset switching is pretty fast and in a live setting it's hard to tell the difference with newer or more expensive modellers. So yeah, if it costs around 200/250€ it's a great option for a live workhorse unit that will get the job done and can be considered expendable in case of heavy damage or theft

    • @TaylorDanley
      @TaylorDanley  Před 4 lety +3

      Dude, awesome comment! Thanks so much for contributing your insight. I agree with you 100% And I think it's really cool that they can be had for that low price. I know a handful of guitar players (typically older guys) who are just now realizing what's happening with these units, and it's so cool that they can get into this world without having to put up a large investment. I think everyone wins!

  • @SashaCrutaire
    @SashaCrutaire Před 4 lety +3

    I definitely think it's worth it. I do agree the IRs are the weak point, and the HD sounds a lot better with decent IRs recording or through a real cab. I just got a fairly decent deal on a PowerCab Plus and I am really looking forward to trying that out with it's built in cabs (hopefully improved from HD) and also it's IR loading capabilities. I already had the Pod HD500x but used prices on those are in the $200 - $250 range, used price on PowerCab Plus $500 - $600 range, that puts total price of that setup at $700 - $850. That is the price of just the foot controller for the Axe FX III.

    Hey dude. I've always wanted to try out a axe fx. Im pretty sure the skys the limit with those units. I do use a pod hd pro x in logic pro. Can I ask why you don't use the built in interface on the hd pro and run it through a interface to your daw. And what interface are you using. Thanks man.

    Great video The pod does not suck the axe fx 3 just has much better mids high and lows. The algorithm for eq and saturation is newer so it has more detail wothout that digital hollowness that the older tech had. I bet if you tried to do a tone match inside the session they could both get super close.

      I feel like you just did such a good job describing something I couldn't! It's almost like some of the information just isnt there with the older modelers, especially in the extreme low and extreme high end.

    @FringeSpectre Před 4 lety +1

    Hey so I'm a complete noob when it comes to the tech side of things, and I just bought the POD pro x. From my limited understanding, if I run my Revv G4 preamp pedal through the POD is that essentially like using an IR pedal? Or do you think I should return the POD and just save up for an AXE? Obviously I'd want the AXE over the POD, but if running my Revv through it will make up for the bad preset cabs I'll stick with it. Please help!!
    Also, I plan on using it live through an actual cab so does that mean I wouldn't need to even use a cab present? I'm so lost.

    • @TaylorDanley
      @TaylorDanley  Před 4 lety

      So couple of things. The Revv pedal is a preamp, not and IR (cabinet simulation). If you are going to use with a real cabinet, and want the tone from the revv, and to use the pod for the other effects, run your rev pedal into the effects loop, that way you can control where it is in your signal chain through the UI on the pod. Hope that helps.

      It shouldn't recognize your mic separately. The only inputss you'll show in logic is podhd pro L and R. If you have those inputs, but your not getting signal, check your setting on the podhd... you have to change your input from guitar to mic. I dont remember exactly where the setting is, but it should be one of those buttons you have to hold to access global settings. Hope that helps!

    Kinda torn. The AFX3 captures the full spectrum of tone, which makes it flexible. The HD however is already the tone that my own ears are inclined towards shaping the tone by dipping mids. But my beef with the HD had always been that it lacks the depth of parameter controller assignment that even the POD X3 had. So the HD for me always lost to the X3 Live in terms of overall usability despite having better sounds. The AFX2 in that regard was also still better than the HD.

      la diferencia de audio no es mucha, pero ademas de que tenes que perillear para acercarte, la verdadera diferencia esta en la emulacion de la valvula, la dinamica y como responde. en el pod esta como mas esteril, por la vieja tecnologia que trae. por ahi tendria q haber comparado con digitales actuales del mismo precio, como la hotone ampero, mooer ge200, etc.

      The opposite oppinion would be that the axe-fx is muddy as fuck. And it is lol.
      However you can say that the pod lacks in mids in opposition. And it does. here,...both can be adjusted.
      Where the real catch is that they actually have the same clippinh character through the same IR and pretty much the same signal level.
      I have to say here that the pod hd is somewhat lower in volume than the axe-fx 3 .wav.
      The axe-fx III is cool...where it rubs me on the wrong way is how much of an asshole its creator is,...with so many great solutions nowadays you can actually get similar to identical results and NOT give your money where you think they don't count.
      It's something that shouldn't bother me but it does and in the end of the day makes me focus on the negative aspects of the axe-fx III clips...as I tried to show you can go vice versa in both ways to insult a sound lol.
      By the way, I followed the a/b again without looking while typing and they actually seem like 98% the same stuff lol...
      Oh, best live sound of any band I've seen were annihilator with helix who would've knew.
      Worst (for the DI crew) were machine head with axe-fx but they weren't bad...

So I thought I would check it out against the Pod Pro amp models of the Fender combos clean sounds. I tell, l ya next to the real thing there was a vast difference, so much so that I sold the Pod Pro and bought the Hot Rod Deluxe. Saturated metal tones are just noise that takes any natural valve amp punch out. You can't beat a real amp.

      oh come on. you are comparing clean tones that nobody cares about in metal which is what the channel is geared towards here. and you are comparing wrong. you have to mic the hot rod deluxe and listen to the track along a pod recording. I bet I can make a similar or better track with the pod. I actually think the hot rod is a bad amp for a lot of uses but a good platform for a pedalboard. I have amps that can put it to shame on the clean channel honestly however.
