As an Englishman, Vermont is just obscure enough that by pure accident, in a Dungeons and Dragons game I'm playing, I accidentally named my character's homeland Veirmont and now the American GM wants me to keep it for the laughs.

I've lived in Vermont and it makes up for it's small everything with it's gorgeous scenery. And really, REALLY cold Winter.

Just so you know Jingles. All Montrealers know Vermont as it is a common place to shop for US goods. In fact we often consider trading Toronto for Vermont because they are more Canadian :)

Lots of Quebecquers immigrated to the US North East states in the 1700s and 1800. That's why so many places in Vermont, New Hampshire, Maine etc all the way thru Boston have French names.

Well, given that at the time, the only ships bearing the names of US states were American battleships, that just wouldn't happen. These days, nuclear submarines are named after states.

That would never happen for two reasons. One only Battleships are named for states. Destroyers are named for people. Two even if Wargaming wants to make something up based on an old napkin doodle by a Teddy Roosevelt, the Texas has been taken by a BB based on a genuinely famous and historical New York-class Dreadnought that served in multiple battles during both World Wars and is the sole suriving dreadnought battleship in the world.

Great game. Subs are like CVs, WG has been trying so hard to shoehorn them into a game (when most players don't want them), that they keep buffing them - the average/bad player is often not much to worry about, but get a good player in them and they can be deadly, with some ships have almost zero counterplay. What fun!
Totally. subs killed WOWS for me. A terrible mechanic that no one wanted. Dont make the game more fun for the other players. Just a bad bad bad financial decision.

I went to school in Vermont, Norwich University, and Jingles is correct. Montpelier is tiny and also the only US state capital without a McDonalds, or anything else for that matter. Newhart came on in the 80s and is a great show.

Bob Newhart had a couple of shows, one in the 70's with Suzanne Pleshette, the Bob Newhart Show' and the one Jingles is thinking of, Newhart, where he played a hotel owner. The finale of Newhart is easily in the top 3 of all TV show finales.
What would be the other two best finales? in your opinion. Mash. And the masterpiece that ends Game of Thro..... Nope, can't even joke about it.

@@FMJellico Blackadder goes forth, that finale literally made me cry. I remember it vividly, and I was not the only one either. In fact the whol Blackadder season focussed upon ww1 was both hilarious, bitingly satirical, and frequently profound and moving. Some of the best TV I ever watched.
@@FMJellico I never was able to warm up to Frazier, the character was just too much of a jerk while often simply getting away with, even being lauded and admired for what amounted to privilege. it's more than possible to have a great character with a silver spoon firmly in his mouth, but the way to do it is, for me at least not the way Frazier was wrtitten and played. I have been told that the show is in part precisely an examination of privilege and the arc can be seen as Frazier learning that 'From those given much, much is expected', but I just couldn't slog through enough earlyier annoyance. I liked a lot of the other actors and characters, Fraziers brother, the sportscasting jock guy, Fraziers Dad were all great, but for me there was this guy who seemed like a pampered little princeling at the center. It's an unfortunate failing in me that I have a hard time appreciating a storie where I dislike the protagonist. Intelluctually I know they aren't real, but I feel judged for wanting to associate with a character I don't admire or at least respect. Silly, but so am I at times.

Bob Newhart, now 93, is hilarious. I suggest listening to his early comedy albums. In particular search CZcams for his routine "Bus Drivers' School". My wife and I watch "Newhart" last year (she'd never seen it). Also Montpelier in America is not pronounced as if French: it is Mont-PEEL-yer.
Americans are notorious for mispronouncing the foreign words we steal. Especially french words because the French talk funny anyway.
When I was in college in the mid late 1980's, we played a drinking game to the show you mentioned with Bob Newhart. It was called "hi Bob"...everytime someone said "Hi Bob" you took a shot. Many a morning I awoke with a hangover because everyone was so friendly to Bob...

Im 21 and from Bulgaria. Heard about Vermont. It is the destination of where walter white hides out in Breaking Bad. It is also mentioned sometimes in some shows. I am a bit intrested in geography so not average joe but also it is not as obscure.
I watched Breaking Bad and Walter hides in New Hampshire not Vermont. The reason the first episode of Season 5 was named "Live Free or Die" was as a reference to the New Hampshire state motto. Actual notable fictional appearances of Vermont aside from Newhart are H.P. Lovecraft's The Whisperer in Darkness and The Pollymana.

Bob Newhart was one of the original stand up comedians of modern times (1920-1960+) His "national debut", was a bit part in a WWII film called "Hell is for Heroes", where he did his much loved one sided telephone gag of an Army landline, that was suspected of being tapped by the Germans, to fool the enemy. He used this gag in any form of conversation with his audience, rolling the folks in the aisles. It's tame stuff now, but wildly funny then.
The Slava may have gone down to a high explosive shower but Jingles' voice makes me have a high explosive shower.

The world, nay, the *entire universe* owes Vermont a great debt of gratitude, for it was in Vermont that Mr.'s Ben and Jerry first conspired to sell ice cream together. The state is also known for an unhealthy obsession with maple syrup and for being the setting of the first "Super Troopers" movie.

I'm a complete map nerd. Vermont's State capital is Montpelier. I also remember the Newhart Show as it showed up in vhs recordings I made of Cheers from Channel 4 on a Friday night. Sadly the tape with a full recorded episode of Newhart disappeared decades ago.

The county seat in the next county over, in rural Maryland, is larger than Montpelier. Charming little town, Montpelier. Three bookstores. And not far out of town is the Granite Museum. The major industry of the state is selling it off, one huge chunk at a time.

New Mexico is more obscure than Vermont. Most folks seem to think that New Mexico is its own country. When I moved to Florida and tried to set up a bank account, the teller was frustrated because she couldn't find conversion rates for New Mexico dollars. The local post office insisted on trying to charge me international rates to Albuquerque and started slapping her computer when it insisted it was a domestic rate. New Mexico magazine has a "One of our 50 is missing" segment for similar stories.
Nah New Mexico has more things about it making it well known. Area 51, Roswell, Bugs Bunny, and Breaking Bad.

Jingles talking about how easy to be aircraft player is past 2019, it brought back memories of playing the RTS style and how hard it was to do anything (damage + spotting) as you have to manage multiple aircraft at once and try to win the air battles while spotting enemy ships for the team and a good aircraft carrier player (unfortunatly i was not one of them ;p) like a god send for a team, now playing them is so boring I played it on a coop battle I was not liking it at all it was too simple it's was like a game I could play on my phone and not suprising at all that a face smashing all over a keyboard can get kills even when you've been sunk.
I guess I'll be that guy: my mom loved Bob Newhart and we watched a few different shows with him on Nick at Nite and later the spinoff rerun channel TV Land (for old shows like westerns, Hogan's Heroes, Adam 12, etc). I knew who Bob Newhart was before I knew who the president was, lol.
