I use my airbrush filled with water to clean the watercolor off afterwards. Each time I use a brush, it takes off the paint at the edges, but the airbrush hasn't so far, just have a paper towel to collect the water sheeting off
DUDE, F*CKING GENIUS.
Worlds most adorable pressure washer!
@@cabe_bedlam 🤣
@@JuanHidalgoMiniatures lol :D
I’m determined to get checkers and stripes on as many of my marines as possible and this was incredibly helpful
Happy to help!
As somebody who has recently been experimenting with doing more freehand designs this is invaluable!!!
Happy to help!
Back in the day (the 80's) we used a soft pencil to sketch out the checkers.
Also a good choice, I still prefer this method
Literally one of the best videos for mini painting. If I find a watercolour palette lying around in my art box, I'm gonna use it. Thank you for this video ❤❤
Happy to help!
This is very helpful > I’m planning to checkboard my Gravis Captain’s powerfist. ❤❤❤
LETS GET CRACKING !!! 😁😁😁
AWESOME
Hello I just wanted to say thanks for taking the time to make these videos 👍🏼 they are very helpful and make it seem achievable.
Thanks for watching!!
Oh, good grief. I love that (and by extension, you). I am now off to paint an owl on a shoulderpad. I'll start with the eyes and then do the rest of the owl :)
That's the correct way of drawing an owl
Another great technique from Juan. Remember friends that some watercolor paints are made from dyes that stain like phthalocyanines or arylides, so test your color on some watercolor paper or cardstock first and see how well it lifts off when rewetted and follow Juan's advice and varnish before doing this technique to be extra safe.
Exactly, that's why I recommend white as it's reasonably opaque and doesn't stain a single bit
What is the varnish generally called so I can find it at my local hobby store?
@@DeadGothicRed well i use acylic varnish because I am sensitive to chemicals that contain thinners but some people use a harder varnish like testors dullcoat for a harder finish more impervious to staining which can be applied with a brush or airbrush if thinned with lacquer thinner or can be bought in spray cans, or you can use vallejo acrylic matt varnish spray 28.531 but brush on vallejo 70.520 or Coat D'Arms matt varnish 139 acrylic varnishes is what I use are more appropriate for minis unless you want a super hard layer but offer less protection. You must apply very light mist from a can and allow to dry at least 1 hour before handling because it'll be sticky for a while. The two I use come in a dropper bottle and a small paint pot so you moisten brush and thin it out and apply which is how I prefer to do it. It's goes on white but dries clear if you use a little water as I explained. If vallejo i@ out of stock you can use d&d prismatic matt varnish or any acrylic medium diluted with a little water but medium is a little softer of a finish usually.
I'm in love with VMS HD Matte varnish right now.
@JuanHidalgoMiniatures and see yesterday I picked up a citadel gloss varnish. I'm also hoping it'll help for when I put transfers on. Also how do you keep a point on your brush? I clean and wash them with that brush soap and try to dry them while in a point but they still have an issue after I wet them.
It will be interesting to see if this sparks a freehand revolution, well done Hidalgo.
I surely hope so!
that shovel knight is so sick
Thanks, I have a video on how to paint it!
Oddly enough I just finished painting hazard stripes on this exact terminator for my ultramarines maybe 20 minutes before seeing this pop up on feed. This is going to be one of those things that I will never forget as long as I’m continuing to paint.
Happy to help!
Just in absolute awe of that Shovel Knight mini
You can see how I painted it in my Blue NMM video
Love your videos. Always come away with another technique to practice and always see a small but steadily sure improvement in my own painting.
Thanks mate
Yet another great idea Juan, let's get cracking! 😁
THANKS
Awesome idea. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks
The way you broke down the Dark Angels sword makes so much sense and my brain does not remotely work that way. I’d absolutely love to see this kind of break down on other symbols.
Wow. Wow wow wow.
Happy to have helped! I will consider doing more
I don't really paint mini's but I love this tip! Thanks for sharing
Happy to help!
biggest brain move XD ty for the tip, good to catch up on all the tricks before painting again XD
Happy to help
You sir, are a genius.
I KNOW
I feel almost stupid for not realizing this was an option. Thanks again, Juan! May you live for a thousand years!
Thanks
That is a brilliant technique! Amazing! Can't wait to try it!
Thanks
I had always done mechanical pencil over varnished model, but this looks even better, nice to fill out the volume instead of just the edges. Being able to erase the guidelines with water after is very cool to see
Thanks! It's also less risky than graphite
Fantastic idea. Amazed that no-one's covered this before. :)
Me too!
Amazing! I might try this for hazard stripes 🤔
Amazing idea
Eye opening mind blowing, guess water colour paint set will be sold out soon, great video, thank you.
Thanks
What a brilliant idea.
Thanks
This is a genius find! Makes freehanding a lot more approachable.
Exactly!
That was one of the best ideas I have seen in years .
It's diffidently something I will try
Thanks
@@JuanHidalgoMiniatures I would have never had the courage to try that on a beautifully shaded model
Rodney Gaul my balls are made of solid ceramite
Beautiful work, and genius technique

Thank you , Juan .

Wow. That Deathwing symbol was splendid. Beautifully done.
Thanks
Dominate the Paint!!
YEAH
Thanks, nice new tool from old watercolors I have sitting around.
Exactly!
An actual game changer. 20 years of hobby and ive never picked up any water paint!
You might now!
Very nice technique, kinda genius to be honest. Thank you for sharing.
Thanks for recognising my utter genius
That's a cool idea. In the past I've done freehand and fine detail with oil paints so that I could clean them off if I messed up, but the downside is it takes ages to cure and is harder to work with than acrylics. Never even thought of water colours.
It's essentially the same principle but far more convenient
Wow that’s awesome I will put this In my painting toolbox!
Happy to help
That's a really handy tip actually. I'll have to try that on my next Deathwatch boys.
Just for completeness' sake, it may be important to note that any other paintlayers with water-soluble properties (like Speedpaints 1.0, Dirty Down, etc) below or in immediate proximity to the freehand might also be reactivated unless they're protected with varnish (although varnish ruins the Dirty Down effects as well).
Good call
This is genius.
Thanks
Very clever!
Thanks
Extremely helpful. Thank you so much.

Solid video. Thanks!

JUAN! This is frickin GENIUS! What a superb idea and so accessible as well. FANTASTIC stuff mister, you sir are a pure legend.
Thanks mate 😘
Great technique! Thank you for this video!
Thanks for watching
This is an excellent technique I'm going to start incorporating into my painting projects. I got to the point that once I'm happy with the base coat, I seal it with dullcoat before doing any of the details out of fear of ruining the base and having to start over. The water color technique is going to be so helpful in getting those irritating little patterns on there without getting any splotches
That's awesome I'm very glad the video helped you
Great work!
Thanks
Great tip. Thank you very much!!

So simple and so brilliant! Perfect for many uses, not just miniatures, in my opinion, but also gunpla and military models. Muchas gracias!
Happy to help! And yes it's an amazing tool that no one uses

Juan Hidalgo is the King of contrast Paint. Juan did more to promote and teach about these contrasts then anyone ever did and could. And thanks for this trick with aquarells I always used a mechanical pencil and a fine rubber eraser, but this is better it seems, especially on round forms like the power fist.
Thanks Grandmaster for sharing this totally free, others would put this on patreon.
Genius.
Thanks!
I've always believed in sharing knowledge for free
