    As someone who speaks Korean as well but wouldn’t call themselves fluent by any means of the word, when I see a video of someone saying they are fluent I’m always waiting for a little demonstration. A self introduction or something :D. I just enjoy seeing other foreigners speak Korean it’s very motivating.

    Hi Marlon! I found very interesting your experience on korean textbooks and educational programms being abroad and inside Korea. However for people outside korea and who wants to learn this language is always the same: King Sejong books (1 to 11 level) and of course it´s not very updated. Languages changes all the time; semantics, expresions, etc. Another thing that is very common is that being outside korea is sooooo hard to find someone to practice...korean inmigrant people doesn´t want talk on in his native; they found strange or they dont want to. Personally listening to korean´s podcasts and watch and read korean news is a good help too. Thanks 4 taking your time to share!!!

      yup king sejeong books are also pretty popular, but university books are my strong reccomendation! and like you said immersion, talking to korean people if possible, podcasts, youtube or tv programs are always so helpful. keep studying and overtime you’ll look back and be so surprised with your progress :-)

    TTMIK was a concrete foundation for my knowledge of Korean, and I think the way that they teach is instrumental to forming a solid basis for Korean grammar (which is very important as a native English speaker where grammar is very different). I think their first few levels of study are very very good for the purpose they are aiming for, but you are right that some of the later things do begin to feel like a little bit of a drag. I don't know when it happened, but at some point I went from using their resources every day (and feeling like I was very much benefitting from them) to suddenly superceding TTMIK and just let myself loose into the world of online language exchange along with other substitute resources on CZcams and the like. Your experience is very interesting, and is very different from my own as I never used hard copy textbooks for my learning but speak Korean comfortably after 4 years. I think all people need is a little foundational grammar and vocabulary and then to just dive into language exchange.

    • @saralemzerri9934
      @saralemzerri9934 Před 5 měsíci

      Can you please tell me exactly how you did it ? I am so confused about what resources I should use

    • @TripleSomething
      @TripleSomething Před 5 měsíci +1

      @@saralemzerri9934 I started with videos on youtube that cover Hangeul, (Specifically Korean Unnie's series where she covers letters one at a time, and then wrote down her entire lessons and examples for each character in a notebook. Doing this thoroughly is important I think, listening to how the teacher pronounces each letter, and writing it on the page whilst reading it and saying it aloud a few times. Need to distance yourself from 'oh this letter is like the alphabet A', just focus on the sound that comes out of the teacher's mouth and realise 'ㄱ sounds like this sound, not like ____ sound from English' - I did this for a few days and I think it helped me set up a solid foundation for pronunciation.
      Then I just methodically went through TTMIK's lessons in levels 1 through 3 over the course of about a year and a half, whilst complimenting it with various grammar/culture lessons via videos on youtube (Yes culture is integral to learning language). Then after about a year and a half of studying I jumped into HelloTalk, a language exchange app and just unapologetically went for it, talking to as many people as I can, making friends, downloading Kakaotalk and adding the language exchange friends I'd met there, and just talking daily. If I were to do it again, I would have started language exchange earlier. The sooner you can get talking to a REAL PERSON, the better.
      Then from there... I didn't really have to formally study. I got by with just youtube, dramas, occaisional grammar lesson when I felt like it but mostly I just talked with the same language partners day in and day out, and it helped my speaking tremendously. I hit a plateau eventually though, where what I was able to speak had caught up with the knowledge of the language in my brain, and I needed to go back to studying - I did a level test and I was at about level 9 on TTMIK, despite studying none of their lesson plans inbetween. I don't doubt studying those would have been beneficial, but you only really need foundational grammar before you can unleash yourself into the world and start talking, where you will improve at a tremendous rate.
      So TLDR - Study Hangeul like your life depends on it for a week or two, then foundational grammar for a while suplemented by some grammar lessons on youtube to keep it fun. Don't bore yourself to death, make learning fun. Then, language exchange x1000, eventually it will just become normal conversation and you will wake up one day and go 'Oh my god I actually speak Korean, since when?'
      Hope this helps! Everyone's experience will be different, but I wish you luck. 한국어를 공부하기 화이팅하세요!

    For those that don't have the option to go to Korea, I'd suggest learning at the Korean consulate/embassy in your nearest big city. They offer collegiate level beginner-intermediate Korean classes for about $70 usd per semester. I used TTMIK as well and I enjoy it and use it for review and refreshing. However, I got better at Korean much quicker with an instructor and the college books they used. (Active Korean by SNU)
    Also a few colleges (like Middlebury) here in the states offer intensive courses if you can afford it.

    Interesting, because for Mandarin Chinese the first six HSK books cover the basic level, however, they lack a lot of information that is covered by professors, meaning it's not a good resource by itself. I wonder if that's the reason why TTIK has so many books for the basic level.

    I don’t really like my Yonsei books. I studied abroad, enrolled in the very beginner level class, and found the books to be way too formal to start off with. I can’t use it in everyday conversation. And the directions are all in Korean, so I don’t understand it. I prefer the TTMIK books as they’re easier to understand. My dream is to work in Korea for a year. Need to find the best resources to get to TOPIK level 4+.
    There is a Korean Center in the city near me that has events and zoom / in-person classes at all levels. I think I’ll try them, gotta save up. It’s $400+ per class.

    So what if I live in a country that doesn't have anything like Korean courses and so, and also online courses are VERY expensive in here? Regardless, I've been learning korean for a while now through CZcams and I'm still a beginner actually but my skills have really improved and I learned quite many grammars through a CZcams Korean grammar course and started to build vocabulary and listening skills so I'm pretty satisfied with that. So I'm asking if it is possible for me to reach a point where I can confidently speak Korean through free online stuff? I have pretty much time like three years and so and I'm planning to continue my studies or to work in Korea. I hope you talk more about this topic in future.

    I totally agree about TTMIK. I feel like they’re way overrated. I’m on EPIK and they gave us free access to the course. The majority they talk to you in English and teach you with very traditional and in my opinion slow methods. It assumes the learner is a westerner who will never understand the complexities of Korean and needs to be treated like a baby. I prefer stuff like immersive reading and listening coming from my experience having learned Japanese to fluency before coming to Korea.

      Hi Kate! This is a CZcams video, he plans what he wants to say, he cuts out any unnecessary bits whilst editing and you are able to control the volume you hear him in. All these factors make the difference in comprehension when having a real life conversation with someone.
      My native language is Portuguese 🇵🇹 I had the same issue when I moved to England as a teen, I promise you it gets better (provided you’re learning English?) - I would recommend trying to immerse yourself into the language more, watch vids in English (anything you want to watch search in English), series, movies etc even if you need English subtitles at first to follow along. Books (actual reading books not the teaching ones) are also good, a lot of people like Harry Potter for languages. It starts off easy and then as the books go it gets more complicated which helps you increase your vocab.
      Maybe English is your native language and the accent is what you’re having issues with, most of what I said would still apply, you’d just have to find vids, series, movies etc in the Canadian accent (basically American so it should be alright)
      good luck :)

    Not quite sure about your take on TTMIK. There’s obviously a reason why they’re one of the biggest Korean teaching companies out there. In my opinion TTMIK is the most beginner friendly Korean resource out there, thus offering a simplicity which is very much needed for a beginner in a language like Korean that is just so different from many other languages. Moreover we shouldn’t undermine their very aesthetically pleasing designs of basically everything that they offer, which makes learning more fun and endurable. They are so interactive with their learners and offer an abundant amount of very useful content, far beyond their grammar books. TTMIK is literally the ideal gateway into the very complex world of the Korean language and it will definitely help you solidify the basics in a very fun and colourful way. Very dry and overly formal university textbooks containing stiff and awkward expressions aren’t necessarily going to benefit the longevity of your studies, as that can really take away some necessary excitement. That’s my personal take on TTMIK as someone who started out with TTMIK and who has reached a very strong lower advanced level in the language.

    • @marlonaleister
      @marlonaleister  Před 6 měsíci +15

      I understand your take as I also started off with TTMIK as my first introduction to the Korean Language, and at the time I thought the same things you said here! But as I mentioned in the video, the main reason I feel like TTMIK (at least the 1-10 series) is far too long of a series for it to be just the “beginning”. 10 books, plus workbooks and other books in their series, just for a remidial level of language is not worth it in my personal opinion.
      as you said, the books can be very aesthetically appealing or inviting - but you said the university books aren’t, and I strongly disagree. if you look at Yonsei or Hanyang Universities series of language books (the ones I studied and recommended), they are so full of color and fun informative content, and even personalized characters with funny and engaging stories from all different background.
      I’d also like to say that their free resources like their podcasts and youtube channels are extremely useful, and I always recommend those resources of theirs all the time! when it comes to the books, I think there are better options out there.
      I’m not saying you are wrong, but these are my own personal opinions and experiences after getting to an advanced level and looking back at what I REALLY took away from the beginning phase of learning Korean :)

    I’d like to hear you speak Korean. That would be a lot more convincing than you just saying you’re fluent.

      Different strokes for different folks. Personally I work in front of a computer for 9 hours a day. So I don't like to also be on the computer/phone outside of these hours. I find using books to study is relaxing.

      I like to write, especially in workbooks. Can’t really hand write with a computer.
