- My first demonstration video showing how I changed the front sprocket nut on my FZS600 from the standard 9mm one that had started to work loose to the upgraded 12mm one.
Tools/Parts used:
Upgraded sprocket nut kit - Yamaha part no. 90891-10124 (£2.92)
Ratchet with 10mm socket and allen key bit (think it was 5mm)
32mm socket
Large torque wrench
Chisel or old flat head screwdriver
Hammer
Metal bar (trolley jack handle) covered in towel.
I did this with advice I found on the best forum for Yamaha fazers on the internet www.foc-u.co.uk
Sorry for calling the sprocket "socket" at the start of the video, didn't realise I did this until after.
Also this process worked for me but I would encourage anyone looking to do this themselves to check on the forum first and gather as much advice and knowledge as they can as im sure I may have missed out some bits that people may need to be aware of.

4:10 That’s a perfect demonstration on why a tab washer is so important. It saved that nut from flying off, and a near disaster. I came in search of a video as I was trying to find out what to use to remove the recessed fixing in the middle, rear, but watching your video I realised mine isn’t recessed, it’s missing. I thought it was hidden as the cover is very tight and won’t budge so I assume a bit of corrosion. Your’s is a very nice example btw.
Very good vid. Use tippex to mark position of gear change bolt
Excellent how-to diy (good angles, informative, etc). Thank you!
PS: pity is, that you didn't continued with other videos alike, on the FZS...
Excellent and informative, cheers
Thanks for that, as a recent newbie to the Fazer I found it very informative. I am a lucky (old 74) boy as I got a 2002 with only 1800 miles on the clock. Love it.
Thanks for the video. Helped me after the one on my bike came off, guess the "mechanic" who did the chain didn't do the job right.
great video! Very helpful!
Axle nut is right on the right 👉 next to the sprocket. And it's torque down with 115nm. Why people don't like the 90nm on the sprocket? The addition of loctite is stated in repair manuals. So why don't do it like Yamaha tells you? They should know how it works.
I am going to look st a Frazer Monday will ask if this mod has been done thanks mate😀
Good instruction. Thanks very much. What were Yamaha thinking though?!
thanks for the video. I think I have the same issue.
Please show us how to make cherry scones next.
Thanks for your reply. This was a very helpful video. I may tap an 8mm bolt and washer to the end of to shaft for double safe keeping.
Nah, just weld it.
Good job, well described. Thanks for putting this up. Do you know if that nut problem (too small) was only on the Fox-eye? I have a '99 box eye...
It affected all fzs600 bikes 98-2003
Phillip Harrison Thanks, I'll give mine a check
I was just about to ask this, I am due to replace my chain and sprockets soon, so I will replace the nut for the bigger one if it's not already been done, I have a 2000 boxeye.
Can u link me to this bolt kit as I’ve been directed to a wrong one? Tia
Buying a 1998 model this week. Where did you buy the but and lock washer from?
Globalfallout Ishere local Yamaha dealer, was surprisingly the cheapest even beating ebay by a few £
Bike was on about 16k miles at that time.
Entiendo gracias muy informativo.mi pulgar 👍.
great video, but I do think the front sprocket is not good and needed changing when this video was made, I hope you don't get the same rattle in few days after.
Thanks for posting man. I’m gonna get one of these bikes and this will be checked. If you plan on selling yours, get in touch, I assume your in Wales...🏍
Paul Hyland unfortunately I sold it last year and bought it’s bigger brother the fzs1000
What is your opinion on the fzs 1000? I have the 600 and I'm thinking on changing to the 1000 model. Is the 1000 as economical as the 600 on the fuel?
I have the 1000 and the same colour as this blue one. Mine is 2005 but in really decent condition. I've just done the front sprocket today as it happens.
Loving the bike. It's a real power house of a machine.
How do you know if you need a new chain and sprockets
Try to pull the chain off the rear sprocket. If there's a gap, your chain is worn out. Uneven wear, with tight spots is also a sign.
Did U use 80 Nm torque ?? oryginal was 70 Nm and new nut 90Nm yes ??
ambero25 yeah I used 80 and checked a few times over the next 1000 miles and it didn’t budge. Up to you what you use though, I used to clean out the front sprocket casing after nearly every ride so was confident I would notice if it started to loosen.
@@panthorfzs4479 ok thanks i will do the same 80Nm :)
Hi Philip, very good informative Video and extremely useful but why the continuous use of the word basically ? You are a good explainer without the use :)
Hi, thanks for the comment. I know what you mean about the word, I only realised when editing the video together. Makes me cringe when I here it now.
:)
"Fastest colour", lol. (darrsi)
Lucky you, the nut on my 53 reg FZ6 Will. Not. Budge. I blame the design, why don't they just copy the Honda method?
That front sprocket no good man it cracked in various of places
DREADED VIRGO the cracking is not the actual sprocket it’s the sound dampening rubber, a lot of them crack and fall to pieces. Doesn’t matter as it’s not a vital part it just helps reduce sound and vibration. A lot of aftermarket sprockets won’t even have it on them.
@@panthorfzs4479 oh ok if you say so aint my bike anyways.had a sprocket just like that an i inspected with the same thing an that bitch was cracked on both sides but aye what do know.
How is a colour fast or the fastest? 🤔 Is that Welsh humour? 😄
