      That line is literally from the fact that the Chinese army and other associated police and security forces ran over the protesters in APC/Tank/Bulldozers (can't remember what vehicles were used) to make "pie" that could be washed down drains or scraped up with back hoes and what not.

    Devs was weak because the characters were too similiar. On alternate sides of the plot, it felt exactly the same. They all spoke in a slow, quiet, robotic tone. When the scene called for more life they couldnt deliver. The main woman in it was terrible. Her spy bf, the beard guy, the blonde woman. The characters had such limited life. It was just flat. That sucked the life out of the story. The fat guy had a couple of good scenes with that kid. Jamie wasnt too bad. But hands down Kenton was the best part and this was my favourite monologue.

      @ben86jones82 Před 3 lety

      The show was flat sadly. It had a decent concept but the acting didn't carry it off. A clever plot alone isn't enough. Did you make a joke that I didn't catch. The laughing at the end of a post doesn't validate a comment. Wish people could work that out. If you thought the characters were well acted and deep. The plot deeper. The costumes deeper still. Good for you. Peace and love.

    • @georgalem3310
      @georgalem3310 Před 3 lety +4

      @@ben86jones82 I really love your ending, "Peace and love" and so (just because of this) let's go a bit deeper into your points and what I think about them. Perhaps we can gain sth from our discussion!
      (1) Your main argument is that the characters are too shallow and speaking "in a slow, quiet robotic tone".
      To be honest with you, I also thought this the first time I watched it, especially for the first episodes. I had this disconcerting feeling that as you put it "the characters were lifeless", a sort of caricature of real-world characters so to speak.
      But as I continued to watch the show and am currently watching it for a second time, I think that I couldn't have been more astray from the truth.
      First of all, it must be said that every character of every show is necessarily shallow. You simply can't capture the huge complexity of a human being in a bunch of episodes, most of whom are targeting the masses, i.e. providing cheap burgers and not sublime food. This also holds true for books btw: Writers like Dostoevsky are the exception and not the rule. Most of the time, for most authors, characters break at the first analysis that you make of them. Again, I believe this is first and foremost a necessary consequence of the fact that we are here dealing with most complex device in the know universe: the human brain.
      Second, I think you might be missing the point altogether: the show portrays one specific type of human psychology: the entrepreneur. It doesn't depict an artist, it doesn't depict a resentful, all-too-average husband as is the case with Walter White. And, moreover, it doesn't depict this type when its hustling at "its best" (aka when its in the process of raising a company out of pure mud), it rather depicts an established entrepreneur. Hence it depicts a bunch of highly rational human beings, where the Apollonian side has triumphed over the Dionysian side so to speak (if we are to borrow a metaphor from Nietzsche).
      Thus I believe exactly this "lifeless" depiction of the entrepreneur is spot on! Think of the astronauts in 2001 a Space Odyssey for a comparison.
      (2) "Certainly can't compare with other shows lol"
      Now, given the above explanation and moreover, adding to this the tremendous depthness of this show when compared to other shows (personally for me this show gets a 10/10 in this respect and is on par with movies like Interstellar, Arrival or Whiplash) I then wondered what one could say for other shows given what you had just said for this show... Hence the 'lol'
      Let me know what you think!

    • @ben86jones82
      @ben86jones82 Před 3 lety +3

      @@georgalem3310 Hello mate. Been working a lot. But did read the post. Thanks for your informative message. I agree with much of what you said regarding TV and books depth of character. Crime and punishment is one of my all time favourite books. I thought breaking bad was decent for 3 years but once Gus died and a chemistry teacher became the king pin, It was too ridiculous.
      I think it's clear that DEVS is your type of show. When your quoting Interstellar and Arrival as rival 10 out of 10 standard. They wouldn't be my top films. I saw DEVS some time ago now. I will take into account what you said about a second viewing. It has a strong plot and deserves one.
      However I didn't say the characters were shallow. Which was my main gripe with how you phrased your message. I thought the show had depth and enjoyed the motives of forrest also. I thought the subject matter was interesting. I liked the moral and philosophical arguments for said concept of pre ordained events.
      None of this was my criticism of the show. The acting performances of the lead cast did not match the story or characters that were written. The lead female was exceptionally poor and flat. Her hardened, tough cookie, find the truth vibe I found very hollywood. Granted she is stunning to look at in a very visual orientated show. And yes that counts in casting. But her inability to bring life to the role, when it required it made her a poor choice.
      In her match up with the blonde woman and long chat on different sides of the moral compass. It felt like a mirror. Tone, style of voice. Granted it had a place in the show. But it was overused. In a show, for it to be anything like 10 and 10. Story alone no matter how interesting isn't enough. I have to be captivated by the performances. Visually the show was cool. Its the primary reason for my Kenton post. That bit about the Chinese revolution was what I felt the show lacked.
      As an add on I did feel the forrest character was strong and his tone, control, desperation and religious styled fanaticism. All delivered under the false guise of a calm progressive scientist. In a robotic tone worked. Matching him with others who did the same so the conversations didn't spark limited range. When he and the blonde woman continually said they had always known how this day would end in the same manner. Another example. Specifically the lead performance though. Was an error which I feel left the show feeling flat. When a very interesting story deserved more.
      Rushing the message a bit so apologies for errors.
      Peace and love.
