A few days ago, I was asked what I was like in a relationship. I told them that I was old-fashioned, i.e., romantic, gentlemanly, and "detallista." And it is this last word that I have trouble with.
I understand that there is no exact translation of this word. I have found the words thoughtful and attentive, but I'm not sure they express what I mean.
A "Detallista" man is a guy who is always thinking about his girlfriend. He is the one who writes her a poem or leaves her a note. He buys her gifts that are not necessarily expensive but show that they have been bought especially for her.
In short, being "detallista" means many things. It is an important word that describes the partner who cares deeply about his or her better half in all kinds of ways.

I've always translated it as "thoughtful" and I think it's a pretty good translation. Also the exclamation ¡Qué detalle! translates pretty well for "How thoughtful!"
