  • Hunger is on the rise, with nearly 282 million people in 59 countries/territories experiencing hunger in 2023; a worldwide increase of 24 million from the previous year. Conflict, climate extremes and economic shocks are main drivers in global food crises, which have impacts on nutrition, displacement, and protracted hunger. The proportion of people facing acute food insecurity remained persistently high at almost 22 percent in 2023, significantly exceeding pre-COVID-19 levels. Since 2020, the prevalence stood above 20 percent, with more than 1 in 5 people assessed faced hunger. This rise was due to the report’s increased coverage of food crisis contexts as well as a sharp deterioration in food security, especially in the Gaza Strip and Sudan. The 2024 Global Report on Food Crises details the data, evidence and financial aspects of food crises.
