- Join us on a breathtaking journey through Peru's rugged Andes in our latest video, where we tackle the exhilarating ascent to the towering heights of Mt. Huascaran. At an elevation of 4700 meters / 15,400 ft, we find ourselves navigating a narrow dirt road, bordered by a sheer cliff on one side and a rocky face on the other, making every turn an adrenaline-fueled moment.
Our destination? An idyllic campsite overlooking a stunning glacier-fed lake, set against the backdrop of snow-capped peaks and cascading glaciers. Experience the sheer beauty of this high-altitude paradise, from the panoramic views down a vast valley to the dramatic nighttime sounds of glacier winds and shifting ice. Despite the challenges, including a reluctant diesel heater and the thin air at high elevation, we find warmth and awe in this unparalleled setting. Witness the beauty and the obstacles of overland travel in South America's most iconic landscapes.

This!! This is why I love (and support!!) your channel. You've taken me places I could never Dream of going myself. Thank you!!
Wow, What a heartwarming comment... You're so welcome!!!
High Altitude Overlanding indeed, love it.
You were smart to bring supplemental oxygen. Incredible. This is why people are motivated to build rigs like yours!
Thanks, we pushed through the night with mild headaches and sore necks without using the oxygen, we were trying to conserve it in case it got worse. but we did okay... I'm trying to find a fingertip blood oximeter locally to show in upcoming videos. I think it would be neat to see the arterial oxygen saturation drop at higher elevations and how fast the O2 tank would help. It's all known science already, but neat to see. I just added the calculated effective oxygen percentage to our dashboard screen. We were down to 11% up there...
@@Everlanders I was told that the more time you spend at altitude the more your body adapts to collecting oxygen via increased red blood cells. Or some such mechanism. Don't know if it's true.
Yes, I think that's true, we've been at 3000+ meters elevation for some weeks, and I think that helped. Even the people we met from Lima, (at sea level) were having much more problems breathing (and fainting) having only come up for the weekend...
It does. On Everest the climbers make several trips to higher camps and down to Basecamp to get used to the altitude. A lot of athletes train in high altitude to get more red blood cells. Sherpas and the indigenous people in the Andes also have a lot more red blod cells genetically@@JerryKauffman
Just WOW. Thank you for this!! Peru is beautiful!!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Always good to catch an episode of this amazing couple. Those valleys were stunning
Geeze....the color of that lake! WOW!
I know, it reminded me of Peyto Lake in Banff National Park...
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peyto_Lake
Legendary camp spot. I've had a few like that in Canada, the US and Mexico. My one home is a 1973 VW bus and the other is a 1973 30 foot sailboat moored in Campbell River. I've worked in IT for almost 30 years so the mix of digital and analog on your channel is wonderfully appealing.
What an amazing adventure! Thank you for sharing these incredible views with us. Safe travels.
*Head in the clouds* ... WOW keep on enjoying ✌
I love Peru. Such a cool place and people.
Agreed, wholeheartedly!! ❤️
So awesome to see you guys having an overdue fun adventure!
Can't wait for the next one.
Looks amazing guys!
It is just so beautiful. But I am happy you could see it all in person.
Fantastic drive!
The best channel ever...notifications from you and my heart skips a beat or two...Love you guys ❤
Tomfoolery, good word! That wooden bridge would make me wonder about crossing for sure. Good thing your spotter walked across first :) I've hiked to 14.5k feet in my youth, not sure how my body would do at altitude these days.
"If you see this video, we lived." That's a good youtuber motto or future video title :)
"If you see this video, we lived." ... right up there with, "Hold my beer and watch this."
Wow stunning scenery. It must be hard to breathe at those altitudes. Great video. The Espar diesel heaters have a real hard time working at those altitudes. You have to tune them to that altitude to work.
Cheers
Yeah, ours works pretty well, but we hadn't used it since El Cucuy, in Colombia (Oct 2022) so it took 3 bumps till it fired, but it was happy after that...
Love this so much. Thanks for sharing! God Bless
I don't even know what to say; those are breathtaking views, figuratively and literally! I knew Peru was beautiful and it's been on my list! Even have a buddy at work who's native who said his whole family would take me in if I'd ever get that way. Certainly going to have to take him up on that offer!
Do it!
Abrazos muy fuertes desde marian wahi cara maria y jason , hermosos y emocionantes videos
great video and scenery!!
waooooo... what a beauty .. just loved it .... take love from INDIA ..
Love the video! I think there is a lot of misconceptions about glaciers. Most folks think that "climate" is responsible for their melting. But truth be told they have been melting since the end of the ice age. It is remarkable that they are still here, but people don't realize prior to 12,000 years ago. Glaciers were did not exist are are technically not part of the natural landscape. They were never intended to be here forever, they will at some point disappear. So enjoy them and admire them while you still can.
The same can be said about civilization.
living your life to the fullest! wonderful
Those roads through Peruvian villages remind me of my father taking his 1969 Ford F450 crew cab to Italy. (He had huge 18-wheeler mirrors that he had to fold in to drive through some of those small Italian villages)
I knew Peru was beautiful,,What an amazing adventure! Thank you for sharing these incredible views with us. Safe travels.
Wow! Every frame was absolutely beautiful.
Fantastic footage! I can't stop smiling.
Kara's cheeks are still a bit fatigued...
It would take a while to get the grin off of my face, too ... providing I could have gotten up the courage to scooter down those switchbacks in the first place. :)@@Everlanders
Wow, you guys. What an epic spot to camp. The scooter cam was super fun to watch and by Kara's laughter, it was a thrill for her. Love seeing everything you are experiencing and wish we were there.
Is very enjoyable to watch you enjoy the roads where I grew up beautiful memories,it’s funny to see people reactions when a 12 year old drive people up lol if you touch the pedals you can drive welcome to peru
Thank you, you have made my day!
Our pleasure! Thanks!
What an epic camping spot.
Que lugar lindo, Peru está na nossa rota de destinos, "Me and Her around the World", ou "Eu e Ela Pelo Mundo" estamos terminando a construção do nosso motorhome para sairmos para desfrutar desta beleza de natureza pelas Américas.
Absolutely love it, I went swimming in one of those lakes in the end montage, just north of laguna 69 😂
Best time ever, building the next rig to go again with the family.
Thanks for making these videos, keeping me motivated.
Epic views would be an understatement!
Beautiful views! Come a little closer to the cliff honey...
Thank you for sharing!
That was fun. Thanks. :)
I’m three years in the making and I’m still not fully road worthy or done building yet. 😂 having someone to watch is nice 👍

Great production quality, love your travel vlog - even with the full on forced grins and thumbs up. 😊
Great job guys loved it soooo beautiful there and very nice rig.
Be safe but have FUN⛰🌲🪨🌵⚒️⚒️💪
Amazing scenery. My knees were getting weak just watching your video, lol.
Outstanding
Fantastic - thank you so much for sharing :)
I can stare at your rig all day long. I love what you did to that truck!
You and me both! 😂
Wow ! awesome . thanks.
You have beautiful photography really like those mountains would like to see more of the drones, soaring over the mountains as you drive❤
It's hard, because at those elevations the drones don't like the thin air, we constantly get over speed warnings on the rotors...
Well, what shall the mother say about such an adventuresome daughter!? Guess we’ll have to blame your dad because he let you do all kinds of interesting challenges in the beautiful Saskatchewan parkland when you were a teenager.
Great video! Enjoyed every moment of it! Mom
Amazing guys! We just spent a couple days in Real de Catorce, Mexico. It's only 2,700m(9000'), but we were feeling a little light headed when hiking. We had to force ourselves to go a little slower.
Wow what happened ....the opening video on my good old Panasonic thx panel went crazy...what's different it was is spectacular.....enjoy those views
Nice roads, even have center markings.
Parabéns ao casal Deus abençoe sempre nas suas viagens vindo ao Brasil pode passar na nossa casa serão bem vindos
Muchas gracias
We need to put a Brazil sticker hehehehehehe
👍👍
What a great adventure!
Thank you for sharing it with us all😄
IMHO, Those scooter shots, did indeed make for some great shots. Both of the scenery and the switch-back curves, but also some great shots of the truck.
I still find that new-ish AC fan shroud to be a great and good looking upgrade.
So Kara, it was great to hear that you really had a lot of fun riding the scooter 🤪
It seemed like engine breaking was enough for moste of the down crawl for the truck.
Does your scooter have regenerative breaking, or motor breaking, or just some kind of mechanical breaks?
Thanks SO much!!! I had an absolute blast riding downhill on those switchbacks... What a view and an incredible way to experience it. Jason says "The scooter has both, Electric Regen braking (which you can hear the ABS pulsating at times), the Regen has 3 fixed levels that you can set while stationary, but it's not variable while riding... And it also has cable operated mechanical Disk Brakes on both wheels."
ABS Regen braking can be heard at 14:59 and at 15:37
@@Everlanders Cool!
I am very impressed the capabilities of this scooter.
Because of regulations (like max one 250W motor) here in the EU, I don't think such functions are even available on the scooters they sell here.
MORE!!!!!
GREAT view - I guess you could feel the engine not having enough air. Did you measure how the engine was running?
Yes, at low RPM needed for the switchbacks the Turbo only builds 5 PSI of boost pressure... At sea level, at nice road speeds, we can boost up to 28 PSI of boost pressure.
Peru is pretty for sure, but I got to hang out with Laurie and have cowboy coffee and diet beers! 😂
Hi guys!! Wonderfull video! Best Regards from Spain
Los encontré antes del salar de maras .. saludos
Es cierto, fue una visita increíble y el restaurante Mountain Experience en la parte superior de las curvas fue excelente.
Hoy los acabo de ver acá en nazca 😮
Es verdad
Loved your video. Wow. Was the green lake you camped at due to copper?
Not so much, It's because Glaciers, acting much like bulldozers, grind against the rock of valley floors and walls as they move, pulverizing the rock into a fine powder of silt and clay. This fine-grained powder is then carried into the lake by the meltwater. The unique turquoise hue of these lakes results from the way glacial flour scatters sunlight. Specifically, the fine particles suspend in the water and scatter the sunlight, reflecting back more of the blue and green spectra, which gives the water its characteristic turquoise color
earthobservatory.nasa.gov/images/145055/how-glaciers-turn-lakes-turquoise
@@Everlandersinteresting. Years ago I drove from Colorado to Alaska. We stopped and camped along the ALCAN highway. Some of the lakes were green or turquoise and wanting to fish were told not to eat the fish due to high metallic content with copper.
Los acabo de ver en Cusco!
Sí, estaremos en Cusco durante aproximadamente una semana, visitaremos Saqsaywaman entre otros sitios arqueológicos y explorar la ciudad. 👍
No altitude sickness? Impressive.

First video annnnd I subscribed! I am curious out your F550 and did the solar work any better in thin air. You may have covered that on another video. Your scooter ride was a great idea and hilarious! Looking forward to seeing more of your videos.
Yeah, our daily solar yield is definitely much higher elevation, sometimes over 10KwH per day... Likely a combination of atmospheric density, cooler temperatures typical at higher elevation, and reduced air pollution...
@@Everlanders that’s about what I thought. It’s interesting how in the sun it can be so warm yet the air temperature is below freezing. What engine is in your F550?
@Captain-Awesome 7.3L International
Such a great spot. I'm curious as to how you figured out that THAT rock for Right Front tire was going to get you level. Props.
I guess after 6 years, I've changed the way I look at the ground... Maybe some luck this time.
So there's Trail Ridge Road here, the Road to Dushanbe (M41), and now this Road seems to be the highest! Very cool! How'd the D5 heater do up there?
We hadn't used the heaters since Oct 2022, so they coughed and sputtered to get going, but they did eventually fire fire up just fine.
Do you guys have the high altitude kit on yours?
@@Everlanders
@Colorado4x4Van No, just what come out of the box.
Jason, grab the bottle by the neck with one hand, use the palm of the other hand to hit the bottle up. Bottle goes one way, the liquid goes the other 👍👍
No dice... I cooked down about 200 peppers and poured it into that bottle while it was still hot. Once cooled it's as thick as peanut butter. We've been clawing it out with chop sticks, but I may need to cut it with some more vinegar...
@@Everlanders Man, that flavour must be kicking some taste buds 😂😂😂😂😂😂 My (ketchup-like fluids tested) method amazes dozens to this day.

Wow! So many incredible shots. It's great to see you guys finding new ways to have fun!
Do you know what that creature was at the end of the video? It looked like a long-eared squirrel to me. Thank you for sharing your adventures!
"Mountain Viscacha" (Lagidium spp.). Viscachas are part of the chinchillidae family, making them relatives to the chinchillas, but they are not true chinchillas. These animals resemble rabbits with long tails and have thick, soft fur. They are quite large compared to the domestic chinchilla, with some species in the viscacha family resembling the size of a small rabbit. Viscachas are known for their ability to adapt to the harsh conditions of the high Andes, living at elevations of up to 5,000 meters (16,400 feet) where vegetation is sparse. They are herbivorous, feeding mainly on grasses and plants found in their mountainous environment.
@@Everlanders Thank you for that very complete answer! What a cool creature :)
are you in first gear going down the mountain??
🎉❤
🛴💨
Spectacular scenery. That destination is on my list. Hey, are the front LED strobes required or would you recommend them?
Not at all required... I got them in Mexico, "Trocas Perronas" have them and it makes them much more visible, like daytime running lights (required in Canada)... But I've rarely used them, only when I think being seen is a safety concern.
@@Everlanders Thanks. I put four on the back bumper area of my rig, cuz I go very, very slow down mountains. Plus, I use them when I'm parked on the side of the road. 🚚
Car didn't have any "not enough air" problems due to lower pressure ?
Our oversized Turbocharger helps a lot, but still a noticeable decrease in power at higher altitudes...
Is this an Eartroamer? Did you need to make any adaptations to travel through South America (Mercosur)?
Nope, built it myself - czcams.com/video/JHXzmZslSwM/video.html
I love the Dashboard display at 11:08. Is this custom built or something i can set up?
If custom how did you make this?
Grafana, Python, InFluxDB
@@Everlanders what are you running it on? I have a couple raspberry pi's that would be ideal for something like this if i can run it on that

Hey guys make a tour of your rig,i am curious to see!!!

Do you use your drone to scout ahead with dead end roads or off piste
Rarely...
Thanks for sharing As It Happens! Kara - what fun!
I only ask as I watch the Toyota World Runners overland channel, another Canadian couple who are in South America at the moment and they use a drone like a selfie stick out Infront of the Truck. I have also seen it used in the sailing channels to spot reefs or anchor points.
What does getting diesel look like down there outside of the cities.
Everything is Diesel, no issues, $0.40/Liter
@@Everlanders dannnnnng I’m comin make room . :) 1.60$/L in Alberta , supposed oil towns !
With my lung disease I could last about 5 minutes at that elevation without O2.
Make a little garage you can quickly deploy a drone from to scout road ahead. It'd need some auto-landing & charging....
That rock under the tire reminds me of-

I would have been impressed if you ride a longboard down the mountain.
I can't ride a longboard on flat polished concrete, so I wouldn't hold out hope...
