Tim, thank you for this series. Insightful. You are a straight shooter and I enjoy that. And Brooke is so refreshing. Thanks.

Hahaha woooow buddy who came up to Brooke, what a schmuck. I would have responded, "Yes I am actually currently taking applications for a sugar daddy, you're welcome to apply since you seem so interested in my financial stability but I'm not sure you meet the minimum requirements..." 😂 Love this series, it's so fantastic, you are a national treasure Tim for sharing so much knowledge with your fellow Canuckleheads and those elsewhere as well. 😊

How do you deal with starting to get into outdoor art fairs when they want to see your booth? Just starting out, I don't have a booth yet. Any comments on that or how many paintings to have for a fair?

There are some of the lower ticket fairs that don’t require a photo of your booth. Or do what I did. I set my whole tent and display rack system with paintings in my backyard. And photographed that 😊👍

Any advice for when you are getting rejected from festivals or juried shows? I am trying to get my footing in the art world but it is hard to get feedback or know what I could change because all you hear back is just the rejection letter, and online art communities often don't give critical feedback. I am finding it hard to find room in the my locl art community, mind you I live in Minneapolis a very art saturated city, but any tips for getting started/dealing with rejection from shows I would love to hear.

      Hi Kristin,
The first thing I would do is go to the actual shows that you have been rejected from and honestly evaluate where your work stands in relation to those works /artists that were accepted... looking at three things first: Technical Skill, Design or Composition, and creativity. ie: unique voice. If your work falls short of the accepted works then you need to work on improving the deficient aspects of yours. You do this by engaging in intentional practice to improve those areas. For example if drawing is a weakness, you can take life drawing classes and start a daily sketchbook to improve this rather than to continue creating paintings where lack of drawing skill is obvious ( as an example )
I would also check over the prospectus to make sure you are not shooting yourself in the foot from the get go. For example most shows want to see a consistent body of work... If you submit images of a portrait, a landscape and an abstract for example... no matter how good they each may be you will likely be rejected from a show that requires this.
The most important thing is to be honest with yourself and identify those areas where you are not very strong and then work to make them strengths... remember this is a marathon not a sprint.
And finally if you can strike up a relationship with someone who's advice you value... ask them for their honest opinion.
      Cheers
      Tim

There ani't such thing as a "professional artist", you are one or you're not, art cannot be teach because it's something personal free of rules, it's the way you explain the world in a different way using your personal point of view.
