Do you own an EMTB?
Nope. They are mopeds and do nothing a mountain bike can't do other than get lazy ass people up hills with little effort. Aside from that, what use are they???
Have one for sale glad to get rid of it cost a fortune on parts if things go wrong just had to have a motor I could have bought a decent mountain bike for the price. Although I thought my fitness was okay I lost loads now I'm getting fit again riding my non assist bike.

I bought one. I live in the hills and only get a free hour here and there to ride (young kids, busy job). The ebike let's me still get one hours exercise but let's me go much further in that one hour, I live in a crazy hilly part of Yorkshire and it's made me love this area and cycling even more.
This is the same for me i use to have to walk up some hills
I don't think e-mtb's will make non-assisted bikes extinct, it's just another niche of cycling as a whole.
It's a good thing as it gives more choice for people.
I reckon the future will close the gap between lightweight and full power e-mtb's as the range of lightweight batteries gets further, and possibly herald in long distance touring e-bikes with well over 100 mile range.
correct .ALL types of bikes will continue to be of interest to someone . from one geared klunkers to the most sophisticated e bike , everyone will find their niche .
Well said. I just added an Ibis Oso to my fleet. Still have all the others. Just another option.
At this point I feel like its batteries that need serious innovation. This goes for everything ie bikes, phones, ev's etc.
I have some serious back issues at 44 so eventually probably sooner than later I will be getting a electric bike, biking has been a hobby since I have been 21 and i would love to keep riding longer rides but feels like my body just can't handle it as well.
@toshman696969 with ev's, when tesla first turned out the roadster, they said that ev's will need to use a different power source than batteries as making and disposing of them is incredibly bad for the environment. All they seem to have done since is create more charge points for the batteries!
I am a fit 74 year old who lives at 6000 feet in the mountainous State of Arizona. Been riding for almost 20 years. I just added a Fezzari Wire Peak emtb. I wanted to have longer rides and especially keep my heart rate out of the red zone. The Fezzari has done that for me. If I ride in eco mode it feels like a regular workout. The higher power modes let me climb where I would have walked before. If I was considerably younger I would not have purchased the Fezzari. I still ride my Orbea hardtail in the National forests.
The Trek store down the street can only wish E’s were taking over. They have rows of them with price reductions, collecting dust. I actually feel really bad for them. I think this massive downturn in the industry has brought the e bike revolution to a grinding halt and will stifle innovation for years to come. No more new designs as the brands struggle to stay afloat.

Yes the character building Analog bikes are getting more rare. Next gen growing up on E only.
Dad always said having fun only gets you so far. Hard work can make you exceptionally great and there is nothing more fun than that. 💪

I train about 15 hours a week. My wife is pretty fit but there's no realistic way she can keep up with me and my friends under her own power. But the ebike allows her to ride with us and enjoy a 3 to 4 hour ride together.
I remember when motorized bicycles were intended for the elderly, the disabled, and long term injuries. Now a bunch of able bodied 30-45 yr old dudes got convinced they “need” them.
Most people I’ve met don’t ride for fitness they ride for fun so the faster you can reach the fun stuff the more enjoyable it is, who really enjoys slowly winching for an hour for 5 min decent
Hi Adam, thanks for your comment. I think that this is definitely a factor. People's time is precious, especially these days and it's seductive to be helped along to your next descent. Massive respect to the non-assisted riders who relish the graft spent on the climbs though!

I got an eMTB recently and although I can climb 40% faster, I get more of a workout than I did on my regular bike.
Thanks for your feedback! E-MTBs really do offer a serious workout if you choose- you can put in the same effort and just get there faster!

I will EVENTUALLY get an E-bike, but probably not for another 20+ years. I'm only 35, and while I am not the most fit person in the world due to diet, eating, and sleep (lack of) habits, as well as not actually working out, I'm still reasonably fit that I often put ride regulars by a lot. I actually had a local in Bentonville last December suggesting I ride here and there etc, but I already had done everything they were suggesting, and it was still about lunch hour on my 4th day... They made the joke "are you sure that's not an E-bike?", pointing to my 37lb Polygon T7. That was a confidence booster in itself. Too many people are spending crazy money on big travel e-bikes and then barely riding an hour or two on green and light blue trails. Like WHY?! Just get an analog bike and work on your fitness. I've only been riding with my T7 for 2 years later this spring and I've come a LONG way in endurance (I still can't do long consistent riding like roadies, but I CAN ride all day long with hitting sections then stopping or slowing to recoup, then going again. E-bikes are just so unnecessary for most of the young and middle aged that're buying em. Kind of like how (at least here in America) everyone is buying pickup trucks just to use them as commuter cars 99% of the time. Just an absolute waste and shifting the market for the worse rather than better in favor of the excess.
luv ridin the fuel exe 5…im 63 and can go without stopping on climbs and still get a workout without the body tear down that was advancing doin tech trails….i drop the battery for flow trails and it rides like a regular fuel…

My new Raymon Fullray E-bike is so good. Went to my local bike park near Caerphilly to session jumps and got in 30 runs, haha yeah I only used half the battery and was getting the urge to ride some nice trails so headed off to the nearby woods at Ganol and Fforest Fawr, sooo good.Got back to the car at the bike park with still 1 bar of battery. That was like 4 hours of pure smiles. My face aches after riding this bike.

Both e-mtbs and mtbs have advantages and disadvantages depending on what they are used for. Neither will outstrip the other. I have both like a lot of riders and my emtb gets me to harder to reach places quicker and easier than my mtb. My mtb is my goto bike for fitness. I have no intention of giving up either bike.

I learned to mountain bike on an eMTB 5 years ago. I have never ridden a non assisted mountain bike and have no plans to ever try one. On average my skills have progressed faster than my friends that ride nonassisted mountain bikes. I ride to progress my mountain descending skills not to get in shape. Gyms are great for that though.
Thanks for the comment! Glad you're enjoying the e-bike life! You're right: There is no substitute for practice in terms of building skills! An E-MTB or an uplift is a great way to increase your descending skills in double-quick time!

I got both the analog and emtb. One is for fitness and fun, one is for commuting and relaxed trail riding on rest days, and fun.
I have both, i use the emtb for when im feeling lazy and bike for when im not. More often than not the emtb stays at home
I notice a lot more Surron electric bikes on my local trails, I guess E-MTb's took over, got bored and decided to do away with the pretense of 1/4 motor assistance and go 100% full gas... err.. electric power...
I really enjoyed the embt, but i wouldn't want it like that all the time as it was a totally different experience to 'normal' cycling. The only way I'd use one is for sessioning downhill/enduro runs if they were local on an SL as the rail was a bit of a boat. They need to be more servicable instead of just replacing units all the time as eventually its going to cost you a lot once the warrenty runs out.

I had a new heart valve just before my 50th birthday. I bought a Turbo Levo to get back into some kind of physical fitness. At the time I bought it, most mtb’ers were anti emtb. There are still some still haters, but even those with analogue bikes are curious enough now to want to see what emtb is all about. More ride time, more climbing. What’s not to like?

I tried emtb once. Right after i ditched the whole mtb and went dirt biking instead because it's more fun than mtb
If it gets more people riding it can't be a bad thing and will benefit trail centers and the economy, but it 's not going to replace the health benefifits of riding a regular bike.
Maybe because most modern MTBs are only built to go downhill, and are hard work to drive up a climb. It's no accident that top-level cross-country bikes don't have the really slack head angles that 'trail' bikes come with...
Unfortunately, making the batteries is a disaster.

Id like one in addition to my MTB but not instead of my MTB.Always nice to have options for different types of experiences...... can't afford one though so it's all pie in the sky for now.

I love E-bikes, but for different reasons than most folks in the comments. I’m of the stance that anyone who drives should reconsider and opt for an ebike where possible. It’s been a decade since I last owned a car, I sold it to buy an Ebike and haven’t looked back. I’ll be the first to admit that it took a bit of time for my body to adjust to riding everywhere, but I’m also healthier for making that choice.
While I don’t expect everyone to be on e-bikes in the future, I do expect to see a whole lot more as people realize that using 4,000lbs of metal just to move themselves is not all it’s cracked up to be.
We got a turbo levo alloy for the family it had fun benefits, like climbing, can't say anything bad about that.
I liked it but not enough to let that amount of money sit.
I get that emtb would be perfect to replace a shuttle ride but that's not most of my riding...
Anyway it wasn't really for me; we got it especially for my 13 yrs old so he could afford more freedom, plot twist: he didn't want to be seen on a emtb at all costs, to him and his teenage bunch of friends emtbs are for old people or "geeks" ... To be perfectly honest I didn't even knew there was such a stigma attached to it before this pretty down to earth in-your-face experience 😂

Cycling is still a small community compared to other sports etc, its good that another option to enable more to enjoy it exists.However E-MTB's are only part of it, will only ever be part of it so lets just all enjoy the sport and ignore the triggering from paid broadcasters with an agenda/brand to push.
I'm not sure they're taking over, but their rise in popularity is primarily because they have been relentlessly pushed by the industry through trade magazines and paid riders. I've nothing against them, but I don't think it's anything about them specifically that is causing the rise (it might be different if they were the same cost as acoustic mtbs). It's just plain old marketing and PR.

E-mountain bikes are just a part of bicycle evolution. Having a E-mountain bike means I'm partying like it's 1999 not 1899. Price wise...I got that fuck it moment when I seen a Haibike ALLMTN 4 2023 reduced from £4,899 to £3,299 then If purchased by a certain date Tredz knocked another bit discount off so I bought it for £2,979. I'm not lazy...I do flee around on my Gravel bike...I'd never buy a E-Gravel bike or E-Road bike.
A very good video but incomplete . What is missing in these type of videos about 90% of the time is the humble hard tail and the style of riding off road that DOESNT involve kamakazi downhills with high speed, huge drops , boulder and root dodging etc.
there are a huge number of E MTB riders that cruise on forest roads and the occasional flow single track that never get mentioned by the bike industry and or reviewers .
i understand why as high level visual action sells whereas old guys cruising through the forest does not . For slower riding on pavement or dirt , one can save a lot of money by buying a hard tail . why pay more for something you will most likely never need or use .
If they do, it'll be the straw that broke the camel's back for me with humanity.

I’m sure I’ll get one at some point in the future with my advancing years but for me that time is not now. Pace of development is too quick which makes resale value poor. No common standards even just say for batteries and connectors and even within same brands parts can be incompatible. I’ll be waiting till they are a more mature product. Lastly is reliability, half my mates have them and every one of them has had battery, motor and software issues. To sum up. E bikes will be great but they aren’t yet.
My cheap chinese one has been 100% reliable since 2015 just with one battery change. I feel sorry for the idiots spending thousands on these crap poser unreliable ebikes when you can get a reliable basic cheap chinese one for like 500

Makes me laugh when people harp on about the loss of fitness benefits and cheating etc. I train twice a day every day for specific aims. When I get on a mountain bike my specific aim is to have a massive grin on my face. Is that cheating?? Or if my energy levels allow me to ride 10 runs at a bike park, why wouldn't I want to reduce the demand on my body and ride 20 runs? Same energy expenditure at the end of the day but double the runs and arguably double the experience.

I believe that gyroscopic assisted self leveling suspension is the next big step in EMTB technology. It’s already here and not too expensive considering how much EMTB’s are already
Because they are fun and fast for minimal effort. Plus lets face it if people can find a way to be lazier they take it. Don't get me wrong they are great for elderly, disability or even those who want to keep up with fellow riders they can't hang with. And to an extent they are great if they get you out there while you would otherwise sit on the couch. However if you are riding for fitness they are an excuse and often a hazard to other riders. Sorry I have seen lots of ebikers and in general they didn't need an ebike but hey they were going 15 + with barely turning the cranks. My cousin who used to do rides on the order of Florida to Mass. now boasts how his ebike lets him ride in the Dolomites and it can do up to 40 mph. Obviously an individual choice and you do you now go ahead and do your thing and argue how you get just as good a workout etc. For me at 54 I would still rather keep pushing myself just don't run over the rest of us when we don't want to pull over because you can go 28 mph when you couldn't hit 20 on your best day with a reg. bike. Exactly why I try and ride trails where I barely see others and won't tell people where they are.

I have seen a lot of e-bikes where I am now riding near Las Vegas and the majority of the e-bike riders are young. I am 63 and have no plans for purchasing an e-bike. I had rather work harder to get where I want to be fitness wise. Wonder if the e-bikes will start igniting and exploding like the e-cars. Don't want one in my garage.
Some people actually use bikes to get places not just go round in a circle, id rather do my hard work at work where im being paid and ill sit on my ebike and let the motor get me there. Its just much smarter

emtb's are popular because people don't want to pedal. What everybody really wants is a dirtbike. Years ago, dirt bikes were super popular. Super fast, 2 stroke, blue smoke spewing, screaming loud dirt bikes were on trails everywhere. The greenweenies manged to get them banned... but people can get away with an emtn bike and now you see surrons all the time.

Looking at the recent study from Edinburgh Napier University, it does say there is a rise in e-bike use, but in this video you forgot to mention that the great majority of users are over 45 years old. So to answer your question... I would say it's just a lot of wealthy lazy seniors.

Bikeparks with lifts are even lazy. With an Emtb you dont have to buy lift tickets. I dont have an emtb. Sometime on vacation I rent one and go in to the Alps. They are great for big mountain adventures

This is full of straw man arguments, confirmation bias, and subjective options parading as objecting facts… manufacturers want to sell e-bike because they increase the average transaction price, that’s it! This type of blind pushing that “e-bikes are best for everyone” is both bad advice at a personal level and bad for the MTB infrastructure/environment.

I will admit they are ok for people over 70 and anyone who cannot physically use a normal MTB. Otherwise just for lazy people.
That opinion belongs in the past and is based on ignorance, I'm sorry. I'm certainly not unfit but at 50 years old I still like to get on the high remote mountain trails on all day rides without giving myself a heart attack or an aching body for several days afterward. I, like many riders over 40 are NOT lazy.
