    Every time I listen to Liber Scriptus, it reminds me that that was my most important solo as a lyrical singer, being a mezzo-soprano boy, and my teacher, she was the soprano, we were sitting together and everything was very beautiful, Verdi's requiem will always have a place in my heart.

    The thing about the tempi (more elastic than others) is that I think LB was taking into account the very particular echo at St Pauls - so you can't just plough ahead - you have to let the sound ring, and then die before moving to the next phrase - take for instance "et preces hymnus". how he takes it slower - and allows each phrase to ring and end before moving on - for clarity, taste, musicianship and sheer brilliance.

    This entire performance is a masterpiece itself, but that Dies Irae in particular is unlike any other I've heard in my opinion. The trumpets are extremely clear and the percussion is extremely powerful. Altogether mixed with this tempo really emphasizes the anger of the Dies Irae without it feeling too rushed. Bravo.

    The mezzo is the absolute most BADASS in this masterwork. St. Pauls absolutely loves Ms. Veasey's voice. She sings the entire space.

    I am not a Verdi worshiper (no one is perfect) but the requiem mass is one of the most beautiful things I have ever heard. This Bernstein then ...

    Like Handel's MESSIAH, Verdi's REQUIEM is essentially an opera in concert form.

    • @jasonhurd4379
      @jasonhurd4379 Před rokem

      Hmmm...not really. Despite the many superficially theatrical moments, Messiah is essentially a meditative work, geared toward contemplation. Händel came much nearer to opera in Belshazzar, Esther, Samson (which the Met has staged), Esther, and in his greatest composition of all: Jephtha.

      Not at all. Verdi's Requiem is beyond any form, but if we want to pick one to dress up this titanic masterpiece it's clearly the symphony at its highest .

      Does the form really matter? It is an exquisite work of art undergirding ancient prayers for the dead.

    The Ingemisco at 33:42 as sung by the 29 year old Domingo along with Bernstein's expansive tempo is the greatest I've ever heard it sung.

      Ikr I was stunned by the beauty in the young Domingo’s voice .
      His legato is excellent and those high notes are very emotional. Plus Bernstein’s expressive conducting
