They put me on this medication at a children’s mental hospital instead of anxiety medication. By the time I was 21 they said I’d need 3 organs replaced due to this medication. It made me pass out and wet the bed and drool.

@@weebmaster9591No book, because that would be against the law. And the psychiatrist would lose his license while in prison for breaking HIPAA. A case study was written on me, how do I know? The doctor asked me if after they figured out what was wrong with me is it something I would be interested in. They said my name would not be used, and initials changed. Also before they could ever start I would have to sign a consent form that went into more detail. Which I signed at the end of my inpatient care, a couple days before my discharge.

Clozapine can be life changing for those with treatment-resistant schizophrenia who are severely ill and/or at high risk of suicide. I know of cases of people who are driving cars for the first time thanks to Clozapine. The side effects can be brutal which is why it's only for people who are so ill or so resistant where managing these side effects with additional medications and regular monitoring is the lesser of the two evils. I've heard the saying that 'some of the happiest schizophrenia patients are the ones on Clozapine'. Schizophrenia is not just about hearing voices, it's an all-encompassing mental illness that strips away at one's sense of self, autonomy, independence, ability to think, maintain relationships and feel connected the world around them.

My question would be is that how it works to treat schizophrenia, by attacking the immune response to the infection in the brain ? There is a lot of research going on now that at least certain types of schizophrenia is caused by some kind of brain infection. Most of the people I know that have been on it for a long time have had massive brain damage. The symptoms got better but overall they got worse. I guess it's just me but, I would think treating the actual infection would make more sense than stopping the body from attacking it.

No. Clozapine is a first generation antipsychotic, meaning it mainly works by acting as a Dopamine antagonist in parts of the brain. It binds to dopamine receptors and lowers or stops their activity altogether. This ties in with a famous theory of schizophrenia in psychiatry and neuroscience proposed in the last century: that some symptoms of schizophrenia (hallucinations, delusions, erratic behaviour, positive symptoms) are the result of too much excessive dopamine activity in certain parts of the brain where this shouldn’t be happening. That is the dopamine hypothesis for schizophrenia, and it is the reason antipsychotics (dopamine antagonists) were tried out for schizophrenia and some success was found in diminishing positive symptoms.
This mode of action of first line medications for schizophrenia has nothing to do with “immune response”, “infection” or the immune system. It is simply dopamine antagonists. However, there are still hypothesis by some researchers out there today that state that there might be other important components in the causes of schizophrenia, and that the dopaminergic hypothesis is not the end all of our understanding of the disease. Some studies and known researchers have found indeed there is a greater amount of health markers for inflammation in the blood of people with schizophrenia, as well as other specific medical markers. What all of this means is still a big question mark. There might be several other components we still don’t understand in the causing of schizophrenia, since medications used now for it only address certain symptoms (positive symptoms) and not others (negative symptoms), as well as cause frequently some undesirable and significant side effects in some patients which can be very bothersome and affect quality of life:
Extrapiramydal symptoms: they include movement dysfunction such as dystonia (continuous spasms and muscle contractions), akathisia (may manifest as motor restlessness), parkinsonism characteristic symptoms such as rigidity, bradykinesia (slowness of movement), tremor, and tardive dyskinesia (irregular, jerky movements). Extrapyramidal symptoms are a reason why subjects drop out of clinical trials of antipsychotics; of the 213 (14.6%) subjects that dropped out of one of the largest clinical trials of antipsychotics (the CATIE trial (Clinical Antipsychotic Trials for Intervention Effectiveness), which included 1460 randomized subjects), 58 (27.2%) of those discontinuations were due to EPS.
