for all the windows users: i downloaded the drivers, plugged in the interface, and it was ready. It is good to use with FL Studio, just use the Focusrite USB Asio driver, and it's fine
GarudaBeats where you got the drives from
Been looking for a cheap USB interface. This looks just the ticket. Just ordered one of these on the back of your review.
Many thanks for the vids, all very informative.
cheers mate. i dont think you'll be dissapointed.
Great review. I’ve ordered one. Appreciate your efforts.
I have the 2i2 model. Love it. Really good audio interface brand.
Just ordered one myself. Glad I made the right choice. Awesome review mate!
yeah. 65 quid, what do you get for that? 2 pairs of uniqlo jeans almost lol
Awsome review! Helped me alot!
+Aedrian Matthew - well you need a stereo line-in audio interface (scarlett solo only has one mono line-in) and then you record the keyboard output, in stereo, IN to logic i suppose. That's what you mean yes?
Great video, thanks for sharing!
Nice review and loved the "11" reference. Nice laugh at the end of the video.
;)
awesome review TY
You talked about Snow Leopard, I'm going to be using it with Sierra. I hope that won't pose any problems.
Great review. Regarding the 48V from USB (which outputs 500mA @ 5V so 2.5 watts), they must just step up the voltage and i guess the mic doesn't need much current ?
Can you use the Mic just on its own, using the Mic as an input whilst leaving your normal USB sound card (i.e your headphones/speakers) as the output
It's really nice, that when you could've actually heard how the recording sounds you had your headphones plugged in. Besides that, good review.
pikherz how on earth can you evaluate an audio interface via another audio interface (your own one or anyone belonging to anyone else watching)? you cant do that, so there's no point having audio.
Just pulled the trigger on one of these.
Wow! Thank you so much for taking the time to test this running with Snow Leopard. That is my preferred OS, and I had been looking at the Scarlett 2i2, but don't really need the extra input, might as well save some money! One of the biggest issues that prevented from considering this rather than the 2i2 is that they don't officially support Snow Leopard. I'm assuming it's the same plugin package included with both. Can you confirm they work with Snow Leopard? Sorry to ask. You've been so kind to do these reviews, but it would be very helpful to confirm they do work with SL. If you get a change, would you be happy to confirm what I suspect-that this hardware and the plugins are only "officially" not supported but are, indeed, functional with SL. I'm not concerned about the Ableton Lite DAW-REAPER stole me from Logic, ProTools, Ableton, and Cubase forever, but perhaps another viewer might like to know. Once again, thank you so very much!
I bought the studio pack with the solo interface + software, can I use this to record my vocals on a already made (rap) instrumental? If so could you make a vid on how to use it plz.
Hello, very informative review, I liked it. I have one question though...How exactly can I record stuff if I have a digital piano?
Hello, I’ve got this in a playlist. You bought a MB air I remember it well.
Could I use both inputs with this unit and essentially record my guitar in stereo? Using MacBook Air w/garageband.
Would I plug this in before or after my effects pedals? I'd like to record the effects with my guitar.
hiya, i can't seem to record the audio track, do you know why this might be?
have done everything you've shown it just doesn't seem to record the audio on the track.
Hi everyone, I use BOSS ME-25 (guitar multieffects) built in USB for recording guitar, what is the difference if I get Scarlett? is the quality much much better? let me know please , thank you
How can i redirect the power source from a computer to a wall outlet? Usb to wall adapter? Thanks
But does it go to 11?
Quick question: can I plug a LINE from my VOX combo into the interface and record? or should I buy a mic and place it in front of the speaker? Thanks
how is the monitor sound quality against say directly using your headset to the mac/pc? thanks
can you also control the headphone volume with the grey button? Or is that only for the connected monitor?
hi..Do i need the DI box before plug into this audio interface?
This will sound like a complete noob question, because I am a noo. But is a this the same as a "soundcard" ? And would this reproduce better audio quality to headphones than my core built in audio on my mac? Last but not least if logic is struggling handling a lot of different tracks at once will this help take the load? Thanks in advance and great review!
I needed to know if it runs on OS 10.6.x Logic 9 which I use on my old Internet connected MacBook and sometime recording. Only 2 USB on it, 1 is online and the other for keyboard & mouse. Not enough USB power to double with a 48v device. Damn if I need FireWire just for the cables. If you know of any cheap, please let me know. For iMac I'm using TC connect 24D firewire but it's not small & don't want to move it around all the freaking time. 11/10 for Scarlett Solo sounds good. Thanks for the upload. You get 12/10 for the video. Camera quality in HD full screen makes it possible to read even the smallest text in the audio settings.
I have a mic that has a quarter inch connector , if i plug it into the guitar bit will i have live monitoring of it
does it work on mac os yosemite?
can i connect it with my keyboard?
Can you use it on an iPad ?
If I buy this solo I can use it with my Mac book air and audio technica with an XLR
nice review!!! saludos!!!
does this runs in windows7 ,32 bit, please anyone tell me this
Is it compatible with mac OS X EL CAPITAN?Thanks in advance
Is it compatible with el capitain?
Great video! Quick question, why do you lower the buffer-size to 32?
Thanks
always run your buffer size as small as possible for lowest latency
Is it compatible with any computer?
i have the solo and when i record my vocals its not so loud so i have to turn them up in my daw but that makes it distorted and noisy can anyone help?
HardcoreMusic Edits what microphone are you using?
How does a keyboard connect. I just got the solo for guitar amp sims but also want to use a midi keyboard to mess about. Is there a specific cable that needs to be used
Usb
Please answer this: Do this product act as a power supply for my mic, or do I do I need a power supply to connect the mic to the power supply and then the power supply to scarlett?
+Danny Ryder the solo delivers 48v phantom power, yes.
Can I connect this interface to a computer whose USB ports are 3.0 even though the card has USB 2.0? I'm not entirely sure
+Toni el Bello yes.
So how does this compare to the duet? I've been looking at the original duet now that it's pretty cheap in the used market and I still have a macbook with firewire.
well i cant tell the difference really with a typical budget mic. the duet does have the advantage of onboard MUTE however, you press the centre rotary control & hold and it down, & it mutes the outputs... either the speaker out and headphone outs or only one of them (configurable in the s/w applet) I reviewed the original duet btw, check our channel.
I am having a huge problem. Ok so I got this for Christmas and it is now July and still haven't been able to use it. I am using an HP stream for my computer so I don't know it's the computer, but when I try to download the Asio driver for it. It keeps on saying access denied. I need help ASAP. I'm new to this music thing so I would appreciate it if I got some advice from anyone. Thanks.
You probably don't have admin permissions on your computer. Look up a guide on how to do it.
Hi,
Can the Instrument / Line input record in stereo? For example if I connect my DJ mixer to it and I want to record with my laptop and also record a mic meanwhile.
+András Szentiványi no it's a mono input
Were I to plug my headphones into the audio jack on the front of the Scarlett Solo, Would it play the audio output from my computer through my headphones, or does that only play the input from the XLR microphone / instruments that are plugged in? I understand this is an old video but I would really love the help!
either, depending how your selected DAW channel is set (input monitoring on or off). when you are nor running a DAW (cubase, logic etc) then you can also select & use the scarlett as your computers main audio in/out for all programmes & games etc.
actually we don't hear the result of recording
Have reverb and delay for mic vocal ?
I have the 2i2 model too, i got it after months of searching gumtree for 70 pound. unfortunately the guy lost the cd serial key for the plugins :( I'm gonna try chasing focus rite up as i still have the box (after seeing the awesome plugins too i want them!) but as i have no proof of purchase I'm going to look like I'm trying to steal their software. Anyways i was going to buy this solo unit as it was in my budget until i found out it had no balanced outputs which is the only reason i wanted it for my krk's along with a headphone monitor to use on my macbook pro. The other thing is it didn't seem to have a headphone volume knob like the 2i2. The only gripe i have with the 2i2 is the headphone jack wobbles slightly although I'm not sure if this is because mine is second hand or if they are made to give a little so they don't break. Is anyone else's 2i2 headphone jack slightly wobbly feeling with a jack inserted? it never cuts or affects audio though.
Probably a silly question, but can the phantom power button be used as an effective mic mute button? or would I just get static or hissing? and is it even a good idea to use it as such?
Sorry, completely new to audio interfaces.
no. in a word. not a good idea.
hi, first off, sorry i am new to this so please forgive any mistakes in my questions.
how is the sound quality of the monitor when you listen to it? i am looking to use this for my pc, mostly for gaming. So am i correct that i could use this to hear my own voice and the game sounds as well?
it's fine, it should behave as any sound card/interface
What's the name of your "go-to" pre-amp? You said it was really good quality. I didn't catch the name and model. Thank you for posting. Much appreciated.
+Adrian Blazevic i was comparing it to a mk1 apogee duet, in terms of any differences in perceived quality using a typical budget studio vocal mic
Does this have a DAC function aswell? i just know that it is an analog to digital converter.
+unnamed212121 It's a USB interface, so yes - It converts the audio to digital and into the computer.
i have a question, my dad makes music for a hobby, his soundcard is pretty old and is not able to produce a good sound whenever he uses an effect or when the music gets to complicated with instruments. i want to buy him a new soundcard. will this product do the job or is this product meant for something else?
+Prow Syniix yes it'll do the job
Why should you leave the 48v off when you plug in the mic? Will it short out or something?
Always best to be safe than sorry.
Have you ever recorded high volume tube amps with a mic on one of these? m57? Thanks.
nope. cant see there'd be any problem though.
Better will be scarlett solo 1st or behringer xenyx q802 usb?
well they are both different o each other. the behringer offer's more input choices but those extra inputs may be irrelevant to the user if they don't have a need for them. The scarlett would probably be more reliable.
Does it give a good output if I use a dynamic mic instead of a condenser mic??
+mainak ganguly yes
which os system are you using coz i'm using mavericks but same software (logic pro x) but when i try to connect or link theres no sound passing input but output is fine
2ONE2 Studio i'm using mavericks. You set the Scarlett in Logic's audip preferences ok? You selected the correct input on the Logic track yes? phantom power is ON if you are using a phantom power mic? and input monitoring is switched ON for the track in logic?
dancetech thnx a lot it worked
really really helpful
2ONE2 Studio what was the problem?
when recording voice can you hear your voice through the headphones out of both ears?
yes
+Alex Heyler - focusrite make a solo for ipad: uk.focusrite.com/ios-audio-interfaces
What Mic did you use for this nice review ?
RED5AUDIO RV6 czcams.com/video/_4k2x5YW5Ls/video.html
Is it just plug in and go
on a mac yes.
Is there anything cheaper if I just need to record guitar, not vocals?
Well there is a few cheaper items mostly from behringer or whoever. Cant vouch for quality though. (www.thomann.de/gb/usb_audio_interfaces.html?oa=pra)
Is it possible to Adapt the headphones volume?
how do you mean?
So, this is probably a stupid question, but I need some clarification. Is this just a method of recording audio to your pc/mac, or will it actually replace your existing soundcard? I'm using Reason 8 so I need something that I can use play 'virtual synths' through, but also has the bonus of line in to record vocals/etc...
+Dennis Caunce It will not replace your sound card it just plugs into your computer using a USB, so yes it is just a recording method
+PANDAmonium Band actually I picked up the 2i2 just today. It does indeed replace the sound card. Except everything is crystal clear now! Great buy! Thanks.
what i am trying to figure out is... can i use protools with it? i dont want abelton or any other program, can you please let me know :D if u can
depends. some pro-tools like LE & M‑Powered only work with m-audio interfaces i believe. regular protools should work with any interface afaik
thanks man :D appreciate it
***** i brought it, it works perfectly with protools and i am 100% happy with it, u should buy it, i promise u will be happy too
+mark meloney yeah should be fine as long as it isnt one of those protools versions that only works with an m-audio interface
dancetech all protools need an interface to make it work from what ive experienced
Hello, I have a question: Is it possible to connect "Focusrite Scarlet Solo" with USB 2.0 on an iMac with USB 3.0?
not sure what you mean. if the usb socket is usb3 it'll connect at usb3 speed. if the socket is usb2 it'll connect at usb2 speed
Ok, thx!
Sry for my bad English 😁
I have the 2i2 but I'm looking to start recording a small drum kit at home in the future and I'm wondering if there's any particular Scarlett model you'd recommend?
well i'm waiting for delivery from M-Audio of their M-Track 8 which features 8 mic pre-amps for a very good price (349 euros at thomann). We shall be producing a short video showing how to record a band (including drums) with this unit. That sort of unit is what you want, with 8 mic pre-amps to receive the 8 mics needed to record drums or a band. Focusrite have units with 8 mic pres but only thunderbolt or firewire, not usb, and they cost WAY more.
+dancetech thanks I'll look into it 🤘
Does it works as recording into Fruity Loops? )
Is it possible to listen to headphones simultaneously as using the rca connection output on the back? I want to use this box as a regular soundcard (sort of) and just want my headphones plugged in continuously whilst also being able to use speakers at the same time.
yes. both outputs work at the same time of course.
Thanks!
can u use fl studio 12 with this snd does anyone know why i don't get any sound after downloading the software? Then when i unplug the interface i get my sound back?
what does the fruityloops manual say about setting up your soundcard or audio interface?
+dancetech thanks man got it!!
thank you
Hi folks. Can someone tell me whether or not this particular model has "clipping" problems, like 2i2 had?
That's what I would like to know as well.
Felix Kjäll I have already bought it. It seems that everything is alright regarding this particular issue. Gain is about 55%.
Interested in this product. I am a keyboard player using a Yamaha Motif Classic as a controller and the Yamaha Motif Rack XS for my sound module. Would it be better for me to record using XLR from the rack to the Focusrite, or use a 1/4 inch cord?
1/4 inch, but it's only a mono line input & surely the Motif sounds are stereo or at least include stereo fx? so really you need an audio interface with 2 line inputs
so then when I record, would I have left channel in one input, right channel in one input, then record simultaneously??
well you could have a mic on one channel/track & guitar on a line-input on another track, but this product has one mic pre-amp and one line input for inputs 1 & 2.
great review pretty much sealed the deal for me! just had a quick question, I was going to be buying the blue spark few friends have recommended it as I rap and it's been known as a good low budget rap mic. in your opinion would the blue spark and this audio interface work well together? obviously im on a low budget trying to stay under $400 if possible. i run a macbook pro as well, and my only software right now is the garageband that came with my laptop. would you recommend getting software or is garageband fine if I have beats being given to me and i only have to record via the blue spark & the focusrite. thanks for any advice you've got to give!
dunno the mic, never used it, but i wouldn't get too hung up on thinking certain mics are good for 'rap' cos that's just nonsense, a mic is either good for vocal or not, and within that certain voices sound better with certain mics..... garageband would be fine for what you describe yes. If you upgrade to logic or whatever you might be a bit lost with all the options.
dancetech awesome thanks for the quick feedback, and i've just been told it was better for rap music because it's better at picking up the deeper sounds etc, and is a pretty warm mic which is usually what's needed for rap. glad to hear garageband should be good enough!
BreeezyB What about the trusty (and cheap) Shure SM58? Great for vocal (whatever you do) and it really will fit into your budget... Can't go wrong in trying it and there are plenty of reviews here...
Black Forest Girl in Oz ended up going with an at2035, love it im very happy with the choice
Black Forest Girl in Oz sm58's are ok yes, there's so much affordable choice tho nowadays with Chinese manufacturing.
Q: Are most audio-interface's compressors digital? Signal being converted and then compressed and perhaps EQ in your normal focusrite or other audio-interfaces?
i'd imagine if an audio interface contained a comp it'd be analog before the conversion stage unless the 'comp' is part of the s/w mixer/routing applet after the actual interface external box
dancetech Then my Konnekt 24D probably has a digital comp since the software lets me choose internal or external meaning being used as a plug in the DAW). I wonder about more pricy Focusrite's with 8 preamps and compressors. No real difference to adding compression in the DAW then. You have to add a switch on the cable to the speakers yourself. Then the rating would be 12 out of 10. With a chinese mic and a £79 preamp it's most affordable nowadays. The real investment is knowledge.
*****
except (without checking the unit's specs, and assuming the comps are in the unit as hardware or in the mixer app as s/w) you can use itas a mic pre with compression per channel and feed it direct back out of the outputs without using a DAW s/w in-between
dancetech Yes I use it as a standalone. I never checked the specs tbh. I like to have the best possible sound already in the headphones with soft notes audible, dynamics within range, EQ shimmering the high end and a low cut. It makes for a better performance IMO rather than hearing the mic as it is. Do a vocal video, you have done Dylan so do: To make you feel my love -Adele/Dylan on guitar and vocals using available plug-ins, flexpitch included. One of the best songs there is. To see if flexpitch gives you a good enough view while recording and it's a great song.
does this work with the audio technica at2020 xlr
Devon Shadbolt yes. it'll work with any mic pretty much.
Can i install the software to more than one computer? Like, if i have laptop and desktop and I want to have software in both of them?
Yes you can
+Zetch Bell thanks
Hi! I've a Macbook pro 13.3 with an USB Port 3.0. Can I use the Scarlett Solo on my computer?
yes
dancetech I have a toshiba laptop and the USB light doesn't turn on when I plug it in my laptop
Dose the usb to connect to computer included
yes
“Im not a guitarists” *continues to shred
I plugged the interface to my toshiba laptop windows 7 and I tried to test the mic but the sound quality is blare and low quality I couldn't find reason !! The mic am using is NT1-A
Im using the same mic and it works fine , what daw are you using?
sorry but what daw means ?
+Tayeb Do Santo the program you're using to record. It stands for Digital Audio Workstation
Tayeb Do Santo I have a toshiba with windows 7 but I can't figure out how to install the interface and The USB light doesn't turn on when I plug it in ??
JAKEPADILLAMUSIC it does actually but I can't record
The only thing I am confused about is, I have an old M Audio Delta 1010lt, and its pretty good, however, It's not ideal for plugging a guitar into because the lack of preamp for instruments....So I was thinking about getting this, however do I still need to keep my delta 1010lt? Or is the focusrite basically a sound card too? How do I hook up my Monitor Speakers to it?
well you could get a DI box instead to plug your guitar into the delta, which would be cheaper than the scarlett solo. But if you aren't using the multiple in/outs on the delta, then why not sell it and get the scralett solo? The solo has a smaller desktop footprint, and it's easy to use, less cables etc, just plug in and play (but remember it only has ONE mic input/pre-amp, not two)
Yeah that is a very good point! Up until now I didnt realize the scarlett could be a complete replacement for the Delta! I dont need multiple ins and outs, so it will be perfect! I also use piano virtual instruments as well, and the scarlett will be perfect for those too!
Thanks for the reply
ok, but remember the scarlett solo has No midi in/out, so if you use a midi master keyboard & rely on the delta 1010LT's midi in/out sockets then you'll need either a usb master keyboard or a usb midi interface to connect your traditional midi master keyboard cos if you sell the LT you're gonna lose that midi connect ability it offers.
So i have Mac and i Purchase same Focusrite Scarlett Solo 2nd Gen. On Focusrite web page is write " NO DRIVER NEED" Plug and play. okay thats fine but when i plug microphone and set in mac input/output Scarlett . mac dont get any signal. sound go out trought monitors so i know that microphone works. So ya definitly it needs some driver. I watch video how to set up it on focusrite web. But still i dont get any sound trougth microphone to mac. Hope there is some Driver or someone who now how to fix it.
it needs no driver. are you using it with logic, garageband, cubase or a similar sequencer software? you only get thru monitoring with a software like that, NOT on the system audio
I have Ableton. i mean that i get no input sound trought that interface to mac i can send photos i have tunrned phantom power gain and input output scarlett but still no Sound. Output Works but input not
what if i only wanna use this with headphones, will the monitor volume knob work? or does it only work for when you have speakers connected?
jims kimmel both
so i can use the knob for headphone volume?
jims kimmel yes
can u connect this to ipad as will
+john Al no i dont think so. Focusrite do the iTrack range for IOS devices
For some reason I'm only getting audio out of my left headphone while using this interface. My headphones work fine when connected to the headphone jack on my iMac. Is there anything else I can check? Btw it does this even when I listen to iTunes and other programs so I know it's something with my Scarlett.
TheFake Torres How old is the interface?
TheFake Torres sounds like the headphone adapter might be dodgy.
+Zeeshan Iqbal I've had it since March of this year so less then a year old.
+dancetech probably idk if this helps but when I use Logic Pro or GarageBand I pan the music all the way to the right and it still plays out of my left headphone only.
An unrelated question, if I may. Can I safely connect my guitar processor - a vox tonelab st - in between my electric guitar and my apogee duet. Have searched like mad so far with no clear answer. I basically want to have the same effects at hand in live/practice situations and while recording at home.
Prem Nath yes if you set the Duet input to Line input level
dancetech The setting that says +4db?
Prem Nath -10
Prem Nath Got it. I think. Thanks! :)
Did you record your speech with this device? There's constant hiss in the background... ;)
lol, That's the Panasonic camcorder built-in mic which picks up all the noise from the computers. I'm using the Solo on the summing up section at the end, sitting about 4ft from the mic (a budget chinese manufactured mic).
Not the only one
Focusrite Scarlett Plugin Suite Review - czcams.com/video/AVCeUeYNT18/video.html
Workaround for the lack of speaker mute button: get a cheap RCA cable a/b switch box and switch output to unconnected side of a/b box for muting. I haven't tried it on this device but it may be helpful to someone. Or just an inline mute adapter if you can find such a thing. My MBox has a mute, and I agree that they are helpful. If you're not using a microphone but are just recording straight in with guitars, keyboards, etc., then this is not an issue since there's no track crosstalk with the sources and playback sounds like there would be if a mic is on.
Tom Burdine behringer ub502 little tablet mixer does the job, dead cheap & gives and additional headphone socket
dancetech Thanks! I will check that out. It looks useful.
Tom Burdine yeah, plus you can bring other sources like ipods or whatever into the speakers easily via extra channels. very useful tool.
If I have windwos 10 what will i need to do to get it to work would i actually have to go back to one of the old ones? Also i have a pc that has windows vista and i was hoping to use that one but i guess it won't work on the either or will it??
+Nick S. you would need to use the windows drivers that's all.
thank you very much
+dancetech Im going to inform focusrite that you gave me a better understanding of their product and even sold me on it better than their own videos and information about the scarlett solo. You definitely deserve them paying you or giving you some free stuff :) especially when your better at showing stuff than they are.
Can the RCA inputs in the back be used for studio monitors (speakers)?
+Stef Malinen they are outputs, and yes they connect to your speakers usually
how do i connect the rca outputs on the solo to both my krk 2nd gen rokit 5's and which cable can i use? please help
great review..unfortunately when I plug in my guitar it records only on the left channel. The output though from focusrite can be heard in stereo :-(
+Sahil Nayar well this all depends what you have setup.. the direct monitoring should be set OFF.
Oh...will give that a shot tonite.
Thanks for replying.
+Sahil Nayar You can't record in 2 channel stereo without buying a separate cable unfortunately. You need a red & white setero cable to aux cable. I had the same problem.
+BasicallyBranDone What he's talking about is nothing to do with stereo recording from a pre-amp or whatever. and you cant record stereo line-in on a scarlett solo as it only has one line input (unless you used a di box for the left mic xlr input)
+dancetech the switching off direct monitor worked for me :-) Thanks again
the question is; can i plug my roland synthesizer keybord inside to record?
yes, but the scarlett solo only has ONE line/instrument input, so if the synth has a stereo out and the sound includes stereo panning information then you'll need to either only record in mono or get a DI box to use the mic input on the scarlett as an additionel left-side stereo line input.. not ideal. if you plan to record alot of stereo synth then get an audio interface with 2 line inputs
+dancetech ok.thankyou for the reply.my synth has an input audio line and also the output..
How would one be able to mute the mic easily without removing the mic from the audio interface (keybind, physical button, etc.)? Thanks.
+DrivenMuffin why would you want to do that?
so that I can mute the mic when I want to...
+DrivenMuffin yeah but why?... it's important. if you are recording you cant have the speakers on anyways when you record. you can stop the mic getting through to the speakers when they are ON by simply switching off input monitoring on the track
like if I am streaming and am using voice activation, then I can press a button to quickly mute myself if I have to leave the pc for a minute
+DrivenMuffin no you cant do that, unless the software you;re using has a mute. The scarlett doesn't have a mute
