  • Being a volunteer firefighter takes a special kind of dedication. That kind of commitment seems to run in the family for the men and women at the Oldtown Volunteer Fire Department in Greenup County. We learn about the Oldtown firefighters' training and the family ties that link many of them together.

They do it for civic pride. These are good neighbors to have. May the Lord Jesus Christ protect you and all first responders.

I started doing youth firebrigade when I was 11. By now I´m almost 17 and am very happy I took the course I took. Just go and ask your local fire department if you share an interest in helping others and contributing to the community and you will get so many things back! By the way: I thought non of my family was a fire fighter until my grandpa told me a month ago ":D

Austin Montgomery in my county, ours are clipped to our turnout coats. We put them on a board in the engine or truck we are on. So we know whose here and who isn’t if someone doesn’t call mayday.

In a career department, you may hav the luxury of having an assigned function or seat … every shift. Volunteers don’t have that luxury. They don’t know who will show, or what their assignment is until they arrive. And that is why you see the accountability tag hanging from their helmet.
My recommendation to the volunteers: when you get to training and receive an assignment, hang your tag where you would at a fire. Follow the same process during training that you would at an incident. It builds that muscle memory so you are counted when necessary at any incident. Stay safe!

I'm a volunteer firefighter in rural Tennessee and I would run into a burning structure if any of my brothers and sisters went down with out any hesitation to either pull them out of gold their hand and die with them and I believe that is what worries my beautiful wife lol

Depends, if they can actually complete all the training the same as the men then I think it's fine, but if the fire department lowered the standards just for the women that should honestly be illegal it is highly dangerous.

@@limemonster2295 That's actually what our military did, lowered the physical requirements, just so they can take in more women and transgenders. I don't know if that happened with firefighters, but if it did, I wouldn't be surprised.
