A Visit to Geoffrey Bawa's Colombo Residence (1957-2003)

  • Originally it was 4 small houses in a raw and a lane to reach them. In 1957, Geoffrey Bawa was a tenent in 3rd house with Number 11 post box. When the last house fell vacant, he persuaded, the land lord ,Harold Pieris, to leave tthat space to acomodate his Rolls Royce cars. In 1968, when 2nd hosuse and 1st house felt vacant he increase the size of his room and domestic helper's room still as a tenent Subsequently, he bought entire area adjucent to the lane and started to construct his house where you see today. From 1998 he was bedriden in this house while suffering with a stroke till he died in 2003 .
