CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Severely wounded, Capt. Miller (Tom Hanks) takes his final stand against an approaching tank.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
Steven Spielberg directed this powerful, realistic re-creation of WWII's D-day invasion and the immediate aftermath. The story opens with a prologue in which a veteran brings his family to the American cemetery at Normandy, and a flashback then joins Capt. John Miller (Tom Hanks) and GIs in a landing craft making the June 6, 1944, approach to Omaha Beach to face devastating German artillery fire. This mass slaughter of American soldiers is depicted in a compelling, unforgettable 24-minute sequence. Miller's men slowly move forward to finally take a concrete pillbox. On the beach littered with bodies is one with the name "Ryan" stenciled on his backpack. Army Chief of Staff Gen. George C. Marshall (Harve Presnell), learning that three Ryan brothers from the same family have all been killed in a single week, requests that the surviving brother, Pvt. James Ryan (Matt Damon), be located and brought back to the United States. Capt. Miller gets the assignment, and he chooses a translator, Cpl. Upham (Jeremy Davis), skilled in language but not in combat, to join his squad of right-hand man Sgt. Horvath (Tom Sizemore), plus privates Mellish (Adam Goldberg), Medic Wade (Giovanni Ribisi), cynical Reiben (Edward Burns) from Brooklyn, Italian-American Caparzo (Vin Diesel), and religious Southerner Jackson (Barry Pepper), an ace sharpshooter who calls on the Lord while taking aim. Having previously experienced action in Italy and North Africa, the close-knit squad sets out through areas still thick with Nazis. After they lose one man in a skirmish at a bombed village, some in the group begin to question the logic of losing more lives to save a single soldier. The film's historical consultant is Stephen E. Ambrose, and the incident is based on a true occurance in Ambrose's 1994 bestseller D-Day: June 6, 1944.

0:45 is interesting because instead of being the central character like throughout the whole film, Miller suddenly became like just another soldier by suddenly getting shot. And that's due to Spielberg's beautiful filmmaking and its realistic portrayal of war.
I know cause when I watched it for the first time I didn’t even realise that it was Cpt. Miller Because in Indian war movies the central character’s death will take like 5 minutes
@Jordan Belfort Yes 😂😂
not rlly. he had an emotional death, not a quick one. it took him ages to die. if he hd just died as soon as he got shot then it would have been more realistic
@@tillerman7272 I'm talking about how he suddenly got shot rather there being an epic built up to that moment. Yes, he died in a melodramatic fashion but his actual shooting couldn't have been more realistic.

He actually had one bullet left
He's trying to shoot at the small hole where the driver would be looking at
This scene moves me to tears every time I watch it. Captain Miller shot, firing a pistol at a Tank which will obviously do nothing, but it's the fact that he fought to the bitter end and never gave up that means a lot to me
Unless he did that to misdirect the tank's attack therefore saving his squad from being shelled in cover.
He was trying to stop the tank from advancing across the bridge, he'd tried to get the dynamite trigger and got mortally wounded and now the tank was on the bridge and approaching so as he sat there fading away he did the only thing left he could do which was to take pot shots with his pistol at the driver's slit in the hope of killing the driver which would stop the tank advancing.
P-51 stole his kill
And of course Capn Miller is perfectly Fine after having a P 51 Mustang drop a bomb and do a direct hit on a tank just 20 feet from him
He was aiming into the tank through the hole
My grandpa told me stories about ww2 and what he went through as a pow. He was shot in the back through his lung, had a grenade explode 10 feet from him, he still had the fragments in his legs. Everyone is talking about how Captain Miller is just shooting at the enemy tank, but nobody is talking about how Captain Miller was actually trying to shoot through the driver peep hole of the tank. If you look extra carefully, you can see his bullets ricochet off of the tank but notice how his bullets were getting closer to the driver peep hole. He knew he was going to die so he tried to take at least one more life before he died. Plus if you take out the driver of a tank, chances are they won't move anywhere, except using the tank barrel to shoot at a stationary position, forward machine guns directed fire only to the front portion of the tank since nobody else knows how to maneuver a tank besides the driver.
i also did notice that since why else would he shoot the tank
Yeah I'm thinking everyone is crossed trained for each position
Just makes sense
Someone from tank training help me out
@@charlieb4585 You are correct, everyone is cross trained in the tanks. A lot of crews even often changed positions in-between move outs, everyone except the commander (still cross trained), he stayed in position because he's the one that actually directs & runs the crew.
So the original comment is incorrect, it would have likely just stalled the tank for a few seconds until they moved the driver's body, the forward machine gunner moves into driver &/or main gunner seat if the main gunner decided to drive.
It's a war, people get injured, sick, or what have you, even in tank crews, so of course crews are cross trained so they can do their duty until a replacement solider is brought up.
It's a very cinematic & heroic moment, but a pistol round (.44 on this one I think) is never going to penetrate a Tiger's driver hatch. That thing is filled with ballistic glass to stop exactly that. Pretty much the only thing punching through that hole is going to be another tank round.
Plus I'm pretty sure the P-51 is what took the Tiger out
nah the bullet proof glass would've stopped the bullet but would've also smashed the glass basically blinding the drivers sight and making the tank unsafe to drive
RIP Tom Sizemore! You were truly one of a kind!

On topic though, this movie was so well done, plenty of WW2 veterans actually left during the opening Omaha beach scene.
A lotof the veterans were actually brought to tears, and shook to the core to have such a realistic representation of one of their absolute worst days on the planet, walking through one of the closest things to hell on Earth a single human could have done.
Also heard that some theaters had actual tables of volunteering therapist for the PTSD'd veterans.

It's a great film and this end battle scene would actually be historically very accurate if the Americans were replaced with British and the location was called Villers-Bocage.
***** The Battle of Villers-Bocage ambush on the German SS101 Heavy Panzer Battalion by British 22nd Armoured Brigade Group, 13th June 1944 same date as narrated in the battle scene. The Tiger tank crossing the bridge in the movie even has the same red turret numerals as Michael Wittmann's 2nd Company at Villers-Bocage. Someone making the movie did good research and just switched British for Americans. Also, "sticky bombs" were actually used like in the movie.
New patch notes:
-1911 damage nerfed from 20000 to 16
-0% chance of spawning a tighter plane
-1911 fire rate nerfed to 0.5 rpm
Capt Miller is the hero but the moment for me is when James Ryan came back with his family and saluted him. I was able to take my daughter to the American cemetery and to stand there in the peaceful final resting place of those young men was just surreal 😢!

The symbolism of this final scene is profound ... the sacrifice of one man firing his final bullets against the "war machine", as the tank comes bearing down on his inevitable fate in this world. War is an atrocity, but you have to admire the bravery of the men (and women), who fight and make the ultimate sacrifice for what they believe in.

People think the plane blew him up but this is really a show of how powerful and versatile the pistol was in the European theatre of combat. Most people only see it as useful in infantry-to-infantry engagements but as shown here, if aimed correctly they could take out the heaviest of German armaments.
You noticeably don't hear any gunfire from the plane, and since it was the first one through it was likely just performing reconnaissance on the area to inform the squadron behind where to attack. Captain Miller was defiant until the end and that perseverance gave him one of many examples of pistols disabling German tanks, just an underrated facet of the pistol's skillset.

There is also some of the early Guadalcanal scenes in The Pacific. It is easy for modern people to imagine semi-automatic rifles being used to lay down fire; less easy to envisage bolt action rifles.
And in some more atrocious low budget films with guns, using a bolt-action rifle as a semi-automatic, never pulling the bolt between shots but somehow still firing rounds.

You do realize that the entire quote is false? The " tank busters" were the p-47's. The aircraft in the scene was a p-51 with no wing armament or locations to arm so it cant explode a tank. All it had was its .50 cal guns and those arent used for shooting tanks, just aircrafts.
@@herosjourney8725 to Hollywood, that is all just semantics
@@exmachina1405 i know, but its not hard for hollywood to use a google search for correct aircrafts.
This reminds me of the stabbing scene that happened just before this. So raw in its brutality.
Even my Grandma enjoyed Saving Private Ryan, and she doesn't normally like violent films.
