I had the pleasure of seeing the Unthanks last night at Hexham Abbey in Northumberland.
They were amazing. I listen to this song all year around but seeing them do it as part of their 'Winter Songs' tour was brilliant. Great mixture of their own songs and re-vamped carols and traditional songs were fantastic. The accoustics in the abbey were amazing enough but the the lights were amazing, illuminating the roof and the old stones of the abbey. Great gig. Excellent musicians. Lovely music. Congratulations on a wonderful, entertaining and memorable concert. Thankyou.

And how many watching were there in Allendale seeing the New Year in with the Tar Barrells ❓ A great tradition. Well done to George Unthank for writing this lovely song 👍👍💯💯

The harmony during “fire in snow” is indescribably beautiful. Goosebumps.

Wonderful new year song, somehow as evocative of past loves and friendships as 'Auld lang syne'. Appreciation here from a resident of the other place where they have Tar Barrels; Ottery St Mary.

Geordies are from Newcastle. People who come from Northumberland are Northumbrians.

Thanks Paul. We Northumbrians are often seen as a bunch of pendants - it comes with the territory. 😁

Is this about the Allendale tar barrel tradition... I’ve been there, took me back.

You are right. The song itself was written by George Unthank, father of the sisters.
