  • I wanted something to provide support to my crossbow while hunting from a blind. I thought it would make it easier for youths to sit in my blind with me and make a good clean shot. I went to Cabela's looking for a BOG FieldPod but then I found the BOG DeathGrip UltraLite. This video goes over the BOG DeathGrip UltraLite and puts it through a field test, shooting a crossbow, a .243 and a 30-06 from it. Used it for crossbow hunting in the blind, then my daughter used it for hunting with my 30-06 and successfully bagged a buck while using it from a ground blind. This is a great shooting rest!

    Great job! I just got a Deathgrip for my Wicked Ridge Fury and will be doing a video out here in Colorado with some 100 yard shots. Your daughter inherited good skills, a natural. I hope the Lord blesses your hunt and your family! Good job.

      @@BooneDownSouth True, it's always time for some training. We got a storm coming and I had technical issues with the last video, a drone kept disconnecting while in high winds and me looking downrange 100 yards. Scary stuff, really scary, almost lost the drone and lost the footage I think this is the link czcams.com/video/ZbHMVpyUi4M/video.html and this was basically the first time shooting it up at the ranch czcams.com/video/mfuRgH60EGY/video.html

    Great video Sir !! I just ordered the death grip from Amazon yesterday now I see this vid !! I'm just wondering how much the tripod you have there is it more expensive than the bog pod because it looked mighty sturdy!!! Kodos to your daughter !!! So great that she enjoys what you have shown her Take care !!!

    • @BooneDownSouth
      @BooneDownSouth  Před 2 lety +1

      Erik that tripod is probably a 30 year old bogen heavy tripod. I do some hobby wildlife photography and I use that tripod to hold one of my really large lenses and camera. The thing is you need more than the tripod - you need a head as well. It is very sturdy, but you would have to sink money into both the tripod and a good heavy duty head. So unless you already had a heavy duty tripod with a heavy duty head its probably just better to stick with the one that. Thanks for checking it out!

    Great video! You have me convinced to get this. My only reservation is that my tripod might not be strong enough. It formerly held DSLR and video cameras but it is a bit old.
    Regarding the wiggle of the crossbow because of the mold, I wonder if it makes sense to pull the crossbow back and have it grip on where the foregrip comes together with the body. It might not be perfectly balanced but may make it more secure?? I have a similar foregrip. I guess I'll find out.
    Thanks for the video!

    • @BooneDownSouth
      @BooneDownSouth  Před 2 lety +1

      Michael you are absolutely right it will stop the side to side wiggle if I slide the crossbow back a little so it grips on the bottom of the hand rail as well as the end of the handrail where it goes up and attached to the main frame. Honestly though it doesn't bother me at all cause it only moves if you force it kind of thing. I never felt like it was going to loosen up and fall out or even come out of place while I was shooting it. It really does the job pretty well. I am still pleased with it. I have been hunting with my crossbow all year, but my youngest daughter wanted to hunt one night when I had to work. I think that is when I had her shooting my 30-06 with this in the video. I was making sure that rifle was on so she could use it that night. But anyway, she hunted off this rest that night and killed a nice buck at 80 yards with a dead on shot. I don't think she could have done that without the rest, because she is a very small framed girl and I doubt she could have held the rifle up to make a steady shot.

      Yea I am real pleased with this DeathGrip Ultralite head. You are correct if I change the position it will provide a more solid lock. Yea the tripod I was using was also really old, as in over 20 years, but it is a strong bogen tripod. If everything is balanced well you should probably be alright is what I am thinking. Also, as far as the crossbow in the grips, even though it is more secure if I change the position, it is secure enough where I have it so in the blind, it will be at that spot. If you are gonna crank it, then yea it makes sense to take it off or move to the more secure position. Good luck with it man. Two of my daughters shot deer off of it last season so it works pretty well.

      If I am not mistaken it is an old Bogen Manfretto 3021 tripod. I mainly use it for my photography. It is probably 20+ years old and just as good as the day I bought it.

      This is just the head. I used this with my own tripod. If you need a tripod they have a different version that includes that but of course that one cost more.

    I would think VERY seriously before buying one of these BOG DeathGrip tripods.
    Many forums complain about the leg clamps (6) breaking. They are made of pot metal and are NOT quality.
    Adding insult to injury.... BOG Customer "Support" will not even SELL you replacement part after the 1 year warranty expires.
    Which means that if your DeathGrip sits in your closet all year and breaks your first trip to the field..... YOU'RE FU*KED.
    So again..... think long and hard BEFORE you purchase from BOG.
    OH...BTW, the ONLY solution BOG offered me was to offer a discount on another DeathGrip.
    I told BOG Customer "Support" to....... well you can guess.

    • @BooneDownSouth
      @BooneDownSouth  Před rokem +1

      I'm sorry you had that experience. The product I reviewed was just the clamping head mount, which was mounted to my own camera tripod. I have no experience with the BOG tripods. All I can say is that the clamping head I got is still working great.

    • @waygee1234
      @waygee1234 Před rokem +1

      @@BooneDownSouth I understand.... the top clamp mechanism is well made. The rest of the system is very well made. The leg clamps are the Achilles heel of the entire gadget and should be backed up by BOG but they are not.
      To those folks who do own the tripod ..Be EXTREMELY CAREFUL with those clamps and DO NOT anticipate BOG support of ANY kind after warranty. BOG will offer NO ASSISTANCE other that to attempt selling you another complete DeathGrip.
      Interestingly named device.... and ironic at the same time.
