    Started reading St. Athanasius today and I was blown away. I am even more blown away by Fr. John’s interpretation. Truly illuminating. 😭 God bless you Father!

    Athanasius' "On the Incarnation" is essential reading for anyone who dares venture a word about Christology and the Incarnation. Fr. John Behr is the key steward of Athanasius' vision. His work, "The Mystery of Christ," is probably the most important work in current Christology today. I look forward to the rest of these lectures.

      @Bradjersak Just started reading this book with my pastors church last week. I’ve also heard you mention it before.
      My wife and I just handed out 10 of your “Jesus shows us” books. You were kind enough to sign several for some and Eden wrote images she had during her prayer time.
      Your work has made a huge impact on my reconstruction. Bless you. You should be getting some candles soon.

    I feel the cross in terms of resurrection is passing from death to life, and in terms of love The Father so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son.

    Father John makes Athanasius so easy to understand. His translation is second to none. Also inviting us to translate for ourselves, not just read his, he included the greek text also! In the book (His translation of On the Incarnation- St. Vlad press) The greatest theologian and teacher of this age.

    Not a Christian but great lecture.
    Orthodoxy and the church fathers are definitely more intellectually stimulating (than other forms of Christianity) even if I disagree and disbelieve in it

    It's amazing how Fr. John Behr is able to, very perceptibly, harvest all those deep meanings from St. Athanasius' words, yet still miss his blindingly obvious miaphysite understanding of the nature of Christ when he says things like "created us by our saviour Jesus Christ.

    • @Josh-hp2gg
      @Josh-hp2gg Před 6 měsíci

      Can you go further in-depth by what you mean? I'm oriental Orthodox, I'm just not understanding you're train of thought.

    • @ramezaziz2336
      @ramezaziz2336 Před 6 měsíci +1

      @@Josh-hp2gg It's not that deep, honestly. Just when St Athanasius says that phrase, he is clearly in his head not separating the two natures of Christ. He is simply swimming in the sea of the pre-Chalcedonian, pre Nestorian ancient church's understanding of the indivisable union of the two natures of Christ. Because while phyically the man Jesus did not exist when man was created, once the "Word became flesh" we must not conceptualise Him in a diaphysite way. The early Church didn't. To me it's jumping out of the text and I'm nothing compared to Fr John Behr.

    This is a simplistic question maybe, but did suggest that Athanasius in fact views the Incarnation as more consequential than trying to determine what "type of atonement" we ought to believe in?

      Just beginning to study Orthodoxy, but from what I gather, that is close to what it is! That is a stunning paradigm shift from Protestant-especially reformed-theology. It is so very very consequential to ones understanding of salvation.
