Adam, the Mollie Kathleen mine is the tourist mine that you are probably thinking of that is abandoned. However, there is a huge open pit mine still operating. You can see the shovels and trucks from the overlook that is an old haul truck bed.

That Skyline Drive is beautiful...I think. Wonderful that you got to take the trip.
We went on that drive during our college geology field camp in CO and I had to drive it with an old Dodge Power Wagon, no power steering, no power brakes and a stick shift. I was about 5' 7", 150# and it was all I could do to handle that beast over that road. Terrified the whole way. Didn't really get to see the scenery for trying to steer that thing on that narrow road!!

Very nice. The climb up reminds me of Mount Scott near Lawton, OK. The road is a little wider there because it's two way but closer to the edge with lots of rails. Have to remember to be careful for rattlesnakes when you are walking around though, had a friend who's daughter was bit by one while out walking around near the top of Mount Scott years ago.
Gotta get the head gasket in my truck fixed before I can do anything like that though. Just getting by for now.
Edit: I think you guys would love staying there sometime. www.recreation.gov/camping/campgrounds/10038733 Be able to get up and see turkey and deer roaming around the campground and go for a short drive and see buffalo and maybe get lucky and see the elk out and around.

I worked with a guy that lived in Colorado for a few years and he told me about skyline drive. He said he liked to take it at night on his motorcycle. He said it felt like he was flying because of all the places where all he could see in his peripheral vision was the night sky and stars. I took the drive with my family (during the day) and they were very nervous. That was about 25 years ago and I don't think it was nearly as developed as it is now.

Especially down southwest(Arizona-California). ...and, of course, there's the great state of California. The Sierras there are great, but they do get dry...not as green as Colorado and Montana...but fewer mosquitoes.

If you want a real thrill and you like change you can drive up Rocky Mountain Boulevard out of Florence cross us 50 and you're going straight up Phantom Canyon on the old railroad bed. You will drive over the triple trestle that was built extra wide so that the Narrow Gauge could have a three-stage bridge for the train to curve. It goes to Cripple Creek and it's grated smooth road all the way you don't need a Hummer to get up there. You also drive through the original train tunnels with a streak of black smoke down the center of the roof. Choose your poison!

Oh yeah. We pronounce it canyon city. The n is has an enya as in pinion. Hope you can make it back to Buena Vista. Visit Mount Princeton Hot Springs. Also, the Great Sand Dunes are amazing. There's a road that goes east out of Canyon City to their City Park which is actually 15-20 minutes up a canyon. All I'm at Drive is a dinosaur dig with plaques and you can get out and look. It is a site where you can go to the college or something like that and register to go on a dig. Some people just get out of their car and start picking at things. I went there with my ex-wife when I visited the kids and had a great time but check with local law enforcement before you dig I don't know the particulars
