      Are the threads for the buffer tube polymer or imbedded metals? I recently had a horrible experience with a New Frontier Armory lower that has polymer threads. my rifle was leaning against a wall on carpeted floor and fell over on its own. The buffer tube skipped over the threads and stripped it out!

      @@Americandog83 There are no threads. The KP15 stock is part of the lower/mold so you don't have to worry about stripping threads on the receiver. Same goes for the threads for the pistol grip, it's part of the lower/mold. If you are looking for a polymer receiver that will let you use your own buffer tube/pistol grip you'll want one with the brass inserts. The only one I know of is Tennessee Arms. Keep in mind that the threaded area are still the weak points on that lower which the KP15 won't have.

      @james avery not just molding plastic is a pain, even machining raw bar stock is a pain. Coolant, no coolant use air blast instead, how much it melts, does it expand when machining then contract, the surface finish from feeds and speeds, fiber filled vs non fiber filled, and even how razor sharp the tooling needs to be by knowing if you need carbide, diamond coated carbide, or sintered diamond that's ground and honed. Plastic just sucks for how it can at times be less predictable than some of the worst machinable alloys like cobalt chrome.

    • @BuggaBoy69
      @BuggaBoy69 Před 4 lety +7

      That’s true to some degree but the reason other companies didn’t “master” plastic manufacturing back then was that they were trying to convert previous gun designs into polymer guns and that’s what makes this project more complex than building a polymer shell for a brand new gun. It’s harder to adapt a piece that was once aluminum into polymer than to have free reign in creating a totally different design. Glock and Steyer were ahead of the curve because they had the funding to make the leap of faith to a brand new polymer design, while others hesitated and made adaptations.

Otherwise they’ve been great. The problem is you’re only about 2.5oz less than a standard aluminum lower. That’s still nothing to sneeze at as a percentage of weight in the stripped lower but having the buffer tube, grip and stock all in the same polymer frame has some additional weight synergies.

    As an automation controls designer (formerly an engineer/programmer), Props on the current progress! Keep up the good work!
    I work in automotive industry, and we also run 60-75 second cycle times to meet vehicle stock and purchase demands.
    Kind of the overall point of such short cycle times is that given an example of 100 working areas (stations) on a single linear assembly line takes 60 seconds. That's 100 minutes or almost 2 hours to produce the product and run through the entire system. Granted after the first one, you're spitting out a new product every minute, but the initial and last build of a model is going to take that much time to fill and empty. Which in reality is the time taken for a facility to ramp up or down from cold start or shutdown.

    I'd say, at least to me, the lower developed for this is certainly the most interesting part of the whole project. I'm certainly not in a position where I can afford to splurge on the completed rifle anytime soon (nor do I have a dire need for one, my existing gear suits my needs well enough), but a $100 lower to piece together over time I'm certainly up for. Good to see that this is still going strong, the delays, especially the ones incurred by the medical needs taking priority, are perfectly understandable.

    Just in case somebody has issues understanding the "shrinkage problem" they were talking about, Almost all materials when they are in the molten state fill higher volume compared to when they are in the solid-state. While solidification, the material starts to go through this change and it will show itself as shrinkage. This problem exists both in metal casting as well as polymers, but the difference is that the behavior of the polymers is much more complicated and less predictable by the human mind so there is the need for computer-assisted simulation to prevent errors in the final product. if they don't take this into account, it is possible that the straight line in the CAD design shows itself as curved or even wobbly.

    After the 1st WWSD series a few buddies and I were drinking and talking about the project. More as a joke than anything I went online and bought the cheapest polymer lower I could find and budget build kit. You know, "for science!" I slapped the garbage rifle together and was pleasantly surprised at how much it doesn't suck. Having said that, I totally expect the lower to snap in half any day now. I am exited to sample the other end of the plastic fantastic world and compare the two.

    That's very cool, there really are some amazing polymers about these days - the VLF glass or carbon filled resins that are available now are starting to rival aluminium. It really wouldn't surprise me if we started to see crazy things like polymer gearbox casings in the near future.

    Was a little sad to hear you can only get a lower with the pdq lever cut as a complete rifle as I built a wwsd upper last year and was really hoping to just buy a completed lower with one. All the same I'm really excited to see this succeed, it looks like this is going to be an amazing product done right. Thanks guys!
