  • Clarence Spencer teaches the 2019 Nightscaper Conference everything we ever wanted to know about Cameras modified for Astrophotography! Get better reds and color out of your nebulae and low-contrast deep sky objects! Bring out detail in your core without high ISO if that is what you love. Basically, get the MOST YOU CAN out of your Astrophotography camera by modding it.
    In fact, the crazy unexpected favorite modifcation Clarence offers at Spencer's Camera & Photo is the AA filter! At the conference we all thought even more about modifying our camera when we saw the change when the AA filter was removed! Go to 42:42 and tell me what you think!

    Very informative talk. Thanks for recording and posting this. For editing future talks I would suggest staying on the full screen slides longer so we can see their content better, with less flashing back and forth. Thanks!

      Hey Alan! I appreciate the feedback! There are probably at least a handful of slides that I still could have left up longer. Sadly, the reality is that for well over the majority of these slides, I swapped back and forth from slide to video just in time for the next slide to come in! For an hour long presentation, there were over 130 slides to include. So I spent most of the time trying to switch when Clarence switched but trying to give the context from the video feed that he was switching. The good news is that with Eric Benedetti's there were far fewer slides and I was able to leave them on for 10-seconds or longer! Then I always pulled them back up when I had enough time and Eric references them. So MUCH easier to follow. Lastly, the pause button is our best bet here with Clarence's presentation. When you ever need a slide longer you can always hit spacebar to read it and then hear him talk about it. But that is definitely the worst case scenario work around and I apologize that it became so necessary this video! :D -Aaron

    I had Spencer's convert my Canon 5Dmk3 to full spectrum and totally agree that the sensitivity is increased greatly. The problem is, white balancing for night exposures into some sort of manageable post processing result, is a nightmare. I've asked directly for white balance files that work with different camera sensors, no reply. Frustrating because this is a fundamental issue with removing stock filters from sensors.

      Did you fix the wb problem? I have a full spectrum too. I do wb on a white piece of paper out in the sun. Since I shoot raw, it easy to tweak wb little in either LR or adobe camera raw.

    Regarding your amazing eclipse image, if I was to get a 5DS modified to full spectrum, would removing the AA filter help with this type of image, as I’m hoping to try an eclipse shoot in 2026/2027 in Europe? Also would a full spectrum camera also work well for moon silhouette shoots as I use my canon EF 800mm for these and the 5DS is on my radar to help with the file size after heavy cropping for large prints?

    Very interesting and informative even though a bit too Canon/Nikon centric for my liking. Regarding the Sony comments, these are not completely accurate. Sonys are absolutely possible to modify, even the newer ones, and render some truly outstanding images with their astonishing sensor technology….and there are companies out there who will take care of the internal IR light bleeding that was mentioned too, so shop around!

    Looking at their website it says the A7III is ok to modify. Seriously thinking about shipping mine off to these guys, I just want the extra ha sensitivity. So will go the visible + ha mod. There's a place here in Melbourne that does mods but they only do full spectrum, not what I want so off to the other side of the world.

Eventually I’d like to get a goto mount like the QS6 R or similar and an ASIair Pro. At that point I’ll likely get one of my Nikons modified. I’m also looking at the Radian Raptor or Redcat. 2h of work to reinstall LPF1 filter or Sensor Cleaning Unit . This is not true ppl , it takes 5 minutes to do if even that if you already disassembled the camera and you are putting it back together .
    If not and the Camera is Assembled then it has LPF1 filter . IF they opened it Removed LPF2 it and not LPF1 and then charge you Extra to finish the work , that is bad business practice , i wouldn't pay for that . Its like someone Repairing your PC , they open it and Remove the CPU, then they assemble it back without CPU installed and then charge you 200$ to do it all over again .
    It makes no sense .
    In any case , its not hard to do , i did it my self .

    Minute 38:22, guy asks "if that a composite?" Spencer responds.. "This one is not" ... are you serious? with 60 sec tracked the foreground on that image would be completely blurred... and what's up with the clip in filters that are used so much in AP, especially the astronomik ones. But no, you need to buy my threaded filters!

    • @PhotogAdventures
      @PhotogAdventures  Před 3 lety

      I can’t speak for Clarence, but he may be using the terminology I use too and thinks of it as a blend. Composite = multiple scenes, moved tripod etc. Blend = same scene, tripod does NOT move and you blend a foreground capture and sky capture into one image. If you read the text at the bottom only the sky was tracked and the foreground was NOT and was 60 seconds at 800 iso. Thanks for watching, Alexis! -Aaron

      @@PhotogAdventures Quick google search on Composite photography
      and this first thing that gets returned -->
      "Composite Photography is simply the blending of two or more images to create one final image." IMO you create a composite image by doing blending, superimposing, etc.. doesn't matter if it's the same scene or not. If you used more than one exposure at some point you will need to need to merge some image layers in post or in-camera (e.g. HDR), not the same thing as a one shot image. For sure that's what that guy who asked was referring to. Anyhow very good information presented in the video and some awesome images, thanks for sharing!

  • @langers503
    @langers503 Před 2 lety

    Great presentation, however utter garbage stating that a DSLR is as good as a CMOS/CCD for AP. Once that sensor starts heating up (modded or not) noise is inevitable. A cooled CMOS/CCD wins hands down every time. A good salesman though, I’ll give him that. A LRF-2 mod a better option in my opinion.

    • @JoeHTX
      @JoeHTX Před 4 lety +3

      Sure.
      I've watched several youtube videos of people that did it themselves, and some of them gave fairly clear instructions too. That made it look a lot easier than it is though! I'm retired now but I worked for many years as an industrial maintenance mechanic, working on, repairing and rebuilding, complex CNC machines, rebuilding high dollar 3 phase motors, heater systems, air conditioner systems, precision CNC controlled saws, pneumatic systems, hydraulic systems, vacuum systems, all kinds of electrical work, welding systems and just about anything else you can think of.
      I have not worked on cameras though, but I would say that I could modify my own camera... IF, I wanted to. Do I want to? HECK NO! It's worth more than the price of a brand new camera to me to have someone with the specific expertise, and experience, to do it for me.
      And speaking from a long observation of human nature, I'll lay good odds that the vast majority of people who have attempted it by watching some videos online and reading a few instructions... have destroyed their camera or done an unacceptably poor job and have a crippled camera they are stuck with. The vast majority of those people you never hear from, it's human nature to keep one's mouth shut after they screw up big time! Of course there is the very small percentage of people who are truly dumb and shout out to the world how they screwed up, I guess they just like to show people how dumb they are.
      The only 'credible' time when someone ruined their camera attempting to do this after following 'online' instructions and telling about, it is if someone tried, destroyed their camera, then told about it to educate other people and advise them to let a PROFESSIONAL DO IT.
