We hope our POKE FOOD TOUR showcases just SOME of the various ways that POKE can be made from being seasoned with FURIKAKE, to SHOYU, to SESAME OIL, to even KIM CHEE!! Check out our video to see the 8 spots we visited and go on your own POKE FOOD TOUR adventure and don't forget to enjoy all the BEAUTIFUL SCENARY that HAWAI'I has to offer too!

It's abundantly clear that there is an appreciation for tako poke here. Tamashiro Market will on occasion (call first) make a "local" tako poke that is my absolute favorite. They use local caught tako so it is pricey but there is nothing to me, that compares. I hope that you can try this tender version of your addiction! Good luckt.

    • @michellejosefoodandtravel

Us + tako = ❤️. Thank you so much for this pro-tip on Tamashiro Market for 'local' tako. Definitely going to have to check in with them to see when they offer it. We're willing to pay a little more to compare what 'local' tako tastes like for sure. Thank you for stopping in and sharing your favorite poke protein!! We appreciate you!

Great poke tour! For those who aren’t familiar with poke in Hawaii, make sure to always get the FRESH poke. The cheaper, previously frozen poke is not going to be nearly as good.

Hi Sam! We've managed to visit a few spots that get their fish fresh from the Honolulu Fish Auction as well ones that source it themselves from the local fisherman. Definitely cannot get it any fresher than that!! We visited the Honolulu Fish Auction (not sure if you saw our previous video on it) and learned a lot about the fishing industry in Hawai'i and have an even deeper appreciation for those that work so hard so we can stuff our faces with that amazing poke. Thank you for stopping in!!

Matter of tastes. I love the cheaper version in Foodland , which is the previously frozen kind, the Hawaiian an the secret spicy for me are the best. Every time I have the fresh ahi version I find it too slimy, again, everybody is different

Aloha Michelle & Jose! Awesome poke video! I am lucky and live 5 mins away from a Tamuras. I love their poke, pickled garlic and pipikaula! I also love Alicia's Market and like you said, it's nice to pair the poke with another protein. Tanioka's is fire too. You're so disciplined there for only getting 3 things! Some people spend $50+ just by picking all kinds of stuff and get carried away LOL. I think real poke is "light" with just Hawaiian salt, limu, sometimes onion, inamona, green onion or shoyu. People started to add sesame oil, then furikake, and then it gets a little out of hand with all kinds of sauces. I do like the ginger onion type poke, but the rest drowned in all kinds of sauces is a bit much for me. I guess I'm a boring purist. 🤣 Mahalo for your hard work putting this video out! 🤙

Hi Misty!! This was such a fun and filling video. We've only scratched the surface of spots...you know that never ending list.😂 We've never had the chance to try pipikaula but have seen it a couple of times in the poke section so definitely going to give it a try on the next one. Yes Alicia's other proteins are so ono too. It was a tough battle to just walk into Tanioka's and just get the 3 things as you know they have so many amazing eats to pick from besides poke. Absolutely nothing wrong with simple poke as long as the fish is fresh!! Thank you as always for your support!!

José...re:kukui nut...condiment not often found in most local retail markets, as it's a Bit $$$$. Cold Ginger Ahi is the best! FYI, growing up, poke was always a side dish and not a whole meal. Wish I was back home to eat real poke!
BTW, you were very close to a place called Waioli Kitchen & Bake Shop. Great scones and other goodies. Their breakfast is also excellent.
Directions from Off the Hook, keep heading further into the valley on East Manoa Rd., but take the first left on Lowrey Ave. Go to the end of Lowrey where it intersects with Manoa Rd. and Oahu Ave. Waioli is straight ahead, but you have to turn left on Manoa Rd.

Looks like you hit most of the favorite places to get poke on O'ahu. At first I thought you were jumping from one area to another in the same day (That's a lot of gas just to get poke), but then I saw your different t-shirts, and I realized you were filming (and eating) on different days. I know you're aware of so many other places to get poke, but have you tried the OG Tamashiro Market on N. King St.? I think that's the first place our family ever bought prepared poke (along with fresh seafood and sashimi), although we've always eaten sashimi and poke prepared (and sometimes caught) by family and friends at home and at parties. The tako poke with miso sauce was one of my uncles' go-to potluck dishes. The newer Maguro Bros. is another popular spot for poke. BTW, the Hawaiian word for the kukui nut relish in poke is 'inamona.

    • @michellejosefoodandtravel

Hi Jody! Definitely so many more spots and not enough stomach space/time. Tamashiro's Market with that pop of pink on their building and that crab hanging from the top is definitely on our list of spots to try for poke. It was interesting to know about their history and how they started out in Hilo on Big Island and were well known for their pork!! Until trying tako in Hawai'i, we never knew we how much we were missing out. We also have Maguro Bros on our list and plan to visit them at their new spot in the Waikiki Shopping Plaza on our next visit. Thanks for stopping by and sharing your poke experiences!

    • @JodyY808
      @JodyY808 Před 6 měsíci +1

@@michellejosefoodandtravel I actually was friends with one of the Tamashiro sons in high school, and I remember going to parties at their home on the top floor of that pink building, and the smell of fish as we took the stairs up there. Two of my cousins also grew up a few houses away from Tamashiro Market and that's where the oldest got his first job cutting fish. He later went on to be a United Airlines flight attendant and traveled the world, but he and his friends often went fishing in Hawai'i and caught the seafood and prepared them for family parties and lu'au. They would also kalua the pig in the underground imu (oven) and eventually started a clambake catering service. That's why we seldom bought prepared poke at family events.

@@michellejosefoodandtravel Yup, I think it's pretty common with local families if members like to go fishing. Or we just bought the fresh seafood at places at Tamashiro Market and prepared the dishes at home. You should see how busy Tamashiro Market is around New Year's when Japanese families traditionally eat sashimi (and how expensive it is). The buyers at the fish auction like my friend Guy Tamashiro are always on the news at the end of December and we learn how expensive ahi is!

Was just re-watching some of your videos & would like toss other places that serve up poke your way....1)Poke on Da Run/Pearl City. Think you may featured them b4?! Any ways, that's run by my cousins & their cousins, so it's Truly "All in Da Ohana!"....
2)Poke for the People/Haleiwa, next to Jenny's Shrimp Truck. Haven't patronized them, in awhile!-lol....
    3) Malama Market/Haleiwa. On Saturday/Sunday's...Ray's huli-huli chicken, so that, in essence...is *****....w/Extreme prejudice!-lol
    4)Poke Stop/Mililani...VG offerings but, again...haven't visited in awhile(Sigh...noticing a trend?!)-lol
    5) Times Supermarket

Aloha Harry!! So many poke places…so little time and so little stomach space and definitely is starting to require deep pockets!! Poke on Da Run is on our never ending list!! We remember you saying it’s run by your ohana!! We’ve recently heard of Poke for the People in Hale’iwa and have them and Kaimana Shave Ice on the list. Malama Market we agree has great poke and it’s a must to get Ray’s since it’s right there in the parking lot! It’s been convenient too bc sometimes Ray’s runs out of rice so we pick some up at the market along with drinks!! 😋Have not heard of Poke Stop so will need to look into that. Times is another spot but we usually just end up at Tamura’s instead!!

@@michellejosefoodandtravel...One thing eyes like about Tamura's is they're always changing poke line-up...

Hello spindrift2640!! There are a ton of poke spots on the island of O’ahu for sure but when there’s limited time and stomach space it’s hard to fit them all in. Nico’s Pier 38 is on our never ending list. If you watched our video on the Honolulu Fish Auction, they get their poke fresh from the fish auction hence the amazing fish they offer. Thank you for taking the time to stop by our channel and share your experiences!!
