  • I’m in Kagoshima in the very south west of Japan’s Kyushu island. Sakurajima volcano is in the distance, smoke rising! Let’s explore from the castle to the Saigo Takamori statue of Last Samurai fame.

Thanks John for showing us a piece of Kagoshima, a special place in my heart as I had a definite spiritual connection with this city. Such strong historical samurai lines, a modern yet relaxed downtown area, many lovely shotengai, and Kagoshima unagi is also delicious! Senganen Park is a stunning vantage point for views of Sakurajima volcano 🌋 and even has a shrine dedicated to cats 😻 Looking forward to seeing the main channel video!

Your videos have given me comfort. I just came back from Japan two days ago, and I have become so blue. I miss Japan very much, the previous time I was there in 2018 I stayed for 2 months. I wish I could live there, but as a 34 yr old, I feel like it's a hopeless dream. 😢 thank you for your videos

A few years ago I took the ship from Okinawa and stopped at almost every of the inhabited islands and lots of them had statues of Saigo-san
I remember walking next to the statue you showed there slowly traveling around on my working holiday, good memories.

Looking forward to catching the rest of this video. In your intro standing near the reconstructed Castle Gate with the shogako (grade school) in the background brought back memories of our visit there earlier this year. Despite it raining cats and dogs we ventured into the nearby streets to locate the various street food offerings that would be given out by local merchants in exchange for cut out coupons on a map of the area. (Our favorites were the miniature donuts.) Such fun, even in the rain.
I'll have to watch the rest of the video to learn if you saw the reconstructed sauna from the original castle. Apparently Kagoshima Castle and Nagoya Castle were the only two Japanese Castles to have a sauna-like bath included. Quite an engineering feat for the Edo Period and without knowledge of the European saunas invented in Finland.
We are looking forward to a return visit to Kagoshima in late March and perhaps once again we will get to see volcanic smoke/steam pouring out of Mount Sakurajima as it looms over the city. Oh, we did get a glimpse of the statue as our bus passed by but given your introduction will now have to include a visit there this time. Funny thing is just after we saw the statue there was a huge billboard promoting the area's Wagyu and I immediately thought of you and your impressive efforts to educate us about Japanese Wagyu including how Kagoshima was victorious in the Wagyu Olympics.

Kagoshima is beautiful. Thanks for sharing some of the history with us. A shame that the local vending machines didn't take Suica! No hydration for you!

Aloha my brother. Kagoshima looked like a great place to visit. I was wondering if there was a Kagoshima Wagyu place to eat there?

Oh, you mention wide avenues... if you look they dont have lines as its officially only meant to be one lane each way (I believe). It was in the newspaper last year.
