Years ago I had the pleasure of working on a real Burns of London guitar. It was gifted to a friend and was in a real state - only one pot in place, no switch and a real birds next of wires under the face plate, five tuners. Redeeming feature was the neck was gorgeous and the pickups all appeared to work. A load of work later and I got it working, probably not as Burns intended, but boy did it scream, shout and grunt - it was far from subtle. Sadly a few years later it was stolen - the thief got a real bargain, but if I ever find them they are in for a load of pain....

Love those derelict restorations! It seems to be a marmite brand doesn't it?

    Regarding the trem.
It's a weird one,I'm sure there's some physics to explain it.
But to me there's a very critical angle so the trem mimicks the neck angle. Or maybe a tiny touch over.
You don't want too taught and behind the curve
Just right on the edge so you can use as minimal push down. But still retain tuning stability.
For 9-42's its 2 springs and get that angle just right.
It can be very finicky and its possible the floyd saddles might want shimming.
Bit of a labour of love tbf,but I like getting em bob on

Agree with you Dean... it's very satisfying if a bit hard to 'rationalise'

Love the new carpet, was just thinking about putting one on my bench…
Take care and keep on keeping on ✌️😎👍

Hey Dion.. I imagine that rockers just put it on 'Wild Dog' and leave it there...
"The wild dogs cry out in the night
As they grow restless, longing for some solitary company
I know that I must do what's right
As sure as Kilimanjaro rises like Olympus above the Serengeti"
Oh no! The WORST lyric in the cheesiest best song ever! In my head I always pretend that it was badly translated from Swahili to cut them some slack....

some G&L bass guitars have a OMG!!!! mode (G&L Fallout, L1000, etc) which cuts highs of one coil via cap to ground and runs in series for a boost.

I think you might be surprised as to how little some old very experienced luthiers charge.
I work for one who's just done a neck reset on an old hofner for £125.

True enough Dean - but it looks to me like it would be a pretty poor hourly rate. If your employer can do it in a timescale that's profitable to him or he doesn't need that job to be profitable... then that's cool. I've not done a conventional glued-on neck reset although I have looked carefully at what a few luthiers have done and it my assessment of the task at hand is that it is far from simple and even if I had experience doing it, I can't see how I would be able to do it for £125. One thing of note - the archtop-type acoustic that I suspect the Hohner you're referring to is has only the heel side to worry about as the fingerboard is flying over the arched top and doesn't need tearing off. And if the neck is literally hanging off one of those Hofners (or Antorias / Kays / Harmony types) then it would be much quicker. But take your regular flat-top with glued-down fingerboard extension.... that's a real pain!

Tbh sam Doug's in his twilight years and he does things as a labour of love for a friends a lot.
Your bob on about the hohner though like most things we're the last chance saloon. And this one was repaired with araldite and necessistaing some major surgery.
The fingerboard tongue does need particular attention usually. But the majority come off reasonably easily.
Like everything after decades you get good. And I've learned so much that quickens the job. It's a feel thing.
Like you with your method, you've become super good at that sam.
I rarely watch guitar vids anymore, bit of a busmans but I like you and uncle doug for smps

I guess it’s a personal thing but it’s one of those guitars that makes me cringe, the looks, the style, the lot. I think it’s the Shadows connection that puts me off.
