How to make a killer flower arrangement with Cranery Gardens (Part 2)

  • This is part 2 of a two part series. In part 1, Crane walks us through his garden and we cut flowers along the way to arrange in this video.
    Jessie makes a $30 mason jar arrangement and seeks constructive feedback from Crane. Crane discusses color, form, and his personal tastes for what makes a great $30 mason jar arrangement that sells well at his roadside stand.
    We also discuss pricing these jars and the $$ behind Crane's side hustle. The takeaway? With the right perennial flowers, I could be doing alot less work!

    Crane, the reason I love your bouquets, is because you create them for your love of beauty, not the price. If I lived near you, I would buy your arrangements because of your gift of creativity, which I understand, having that gift myself. I don't buy pre-made floral arrangements, because they don't have the heart and design sense that your arrangements have. Your interest in making lasting meaningful relationships, means everything in life.
    You will have many opportunities come your way, because of the way you value and respect relationships.
    Just wish I lived closer to you, but Washington is pretty far away to run over to visit you and enjoy your garden with you.

    I couldn’t wait to see your cost breakdown of Crane’s bouquet. I love that he just wants to create an artistic display to bless his customers and share the beauty growing in his garden and he doesn’t let the per stem price influence what goes in the bouquet. I cracked up as he was squirming watching you add flowers haphazardly to the jar knowing he builds his spiral bouquet in his hand. I especially love that you understand his heart that he can overstuff, keep his business manageable in order to not burnout and maintain his joy.

      There’s a whole group of people who grow to give away via The Growing Kindness Project. I think it’s important even when we are selling with the intention of making profit, that we carve out dedicated product for giving away. Not product that wasn’t unsold but fresh, high quality product that would be reserved for normal customers. There are a lot of ways to sell “kindly” in a capitalist world and I’m glad to see more are in this bucket.

    From a credit card processing standpoint... Florists are classified as a "services" merchant category code where you get a lower processing rate for tickets over $100.
    This doesn't help anyone who uses Square/Stripe/Clover and didn't ask for IC+ pricing... For anyone on cost plus, make sure you get that florist MCC.

    • @bareflowerfarm
      @bareflowerfarm  Před 2 měsíci

      From when I spoke to Crane, it appears that for floral holidays, if he doesn't have focal flowers, he'll buy in blooms. But for most of the season, he has enough perennials or will start annuals from seed to carry him through!
      From my perspective- I actually bought a ton of stems in my year 1 because I didn't grow enough yet sold at a farmer's market every other week. That made sense for me because it meant I could have some sort of consistency and maximize my sales. If I didn't have the farmer's market, I probably wouldn't have done that.

    You don't want to hurt your florist friends but you are. You are undercutting them selling bouquets way to cheap based on the flowers in your bouquets. It might not hurt their sales but if one of you customers want to buy from the florist for a special event their expected cost will be lower based on your prices. Does the price include the mason jar?

    • @thewilderfarm4462

      I don't think that's a fair statement. I personally have never seen a florist's bouquet aside from extremely high end design work (so I'm talking about your typical florist shop) that I would even take into my house for free. Most of them are insanely expensive and hideous. I'm not a customer for them as a result, but I'd pay 30 for one of his regularly. Me taking his flowers wouldn't mean a loss for any local businesses, and honestly if it did, it's not his responsibility to take care of local florists. It's frustrating to see people putting pressure on literal micro businesses to act like full fledged businesses when clearly this is something he loves doing and probably isn't interested in that anyway. Trying to shame him for a side gig that enriches his life and gives people access to flowers they otherwise wouldn't buy isn't helping anyone.
