No, the little collar around the top is what is causing this. It's the same thing as sabering a wine bottle, all you need to do is hit the underside of that collar and the top will pop off. The tapping on the sides does absolutely nothing.

In case you're wondering, you need to strike the knife up the side of the bottle that has the seam. It's essentially the same as sabering champagne bottles, on a smaller bottle. But the seam is critical.
And an important detail with sabering bottles is that they should be very chilled
