Do you have a scooter that is hard to start? Perhaps your scooter doesn't start at all. Or maybe even still your scooter starts but it wont stay running! A valve adjustment might be just what your scooter needs.
I was inspired to make this video by questions asked in the comment section of another one of my videos!
If you have a suggestion, or an idea for another episode of scooter 911 leave it in the comment section!

As a person with a Master's in Training in Industry, this video is one of the very few that is actually well presented and effective. In short, most how-to videos are extremely poorly done... this one is the exception. Well done!
Thank you so much!
Well said.
@@Scooter_911 I've just put a big bore kit into my yamaha cygnus nxc 125cc and find it very hard to turn over on the starter motor and end up finding it is still hard to kick start eventually I start it.after looking at this video do you think it's timing or valve adjustments. Regards joe
Will this work on my bike?
Ll
Thank you. I bought a scooter that would not start cold without cranking for ages. I was going to rebuild the whole engine, but saw this video then checked the valve clearances, the exhaust valve was being held open, set the adjustments to your specs and it started within half a rotation!
Just a disclaimer, I've never worked on an engine in my life before now. This video helped me fix my scooter that hasn't run right since I got it. I've had two older mechanics look at it, replace over a hundred dollars in parts, and this video saved my scooter. Thank you so much!
Congratulations! That is so great to hear! But make sure you give credit where credit is due, YOU took the initiative and had the confidence to handle the job and for that I applaud you! Thanks for sharing your victory!
So if you mess up what the valve lash supposed to be when it's bottom then? None? As in closed?
I been working on cars all my life and now 53years. You have talent for teaching 😊. I subscribed 😊
Amazing. I just did this valve adjustment following this video and my hard starting problem and weird idle...are gone. Both valves were off a little bit, the tappets were making slight contact on both ends. That tiny little adjustment FIXED my problem? I can't believe it. Thank you. I feel smarter now. haha
Just tried this because my scooter would start extremely hard. When running, my tao tao would have this ticking sound. After I adjusted the valves it starts and runs much smoother and no more ticking sound. This video was very thoroughly and is a great guide for CZcams mechanics like me.
"People who work on them...aren't smarter than you." Wow dude.. sub'd

My Business Planning class instructor said the same thing about investing in stocks yourself by reading the reports vs letting a money manager do it.
He claimed with just a little bit of work it was very easy to beat the market

Thank you!! I spent over a year troubleshooting my 2018 50CC Taotao with no success. I changed carburetors (twice), new spark plug, checked fuel lines for leaking air, checked air filter, adjusted carburetor and replaced jets with different sizes, and many other things. I finally came across your video, made the valve adjustments and now it runs better than ever before! Too bad I couldn't have found your video sooner. Thanks again for your detailed demonstration.
Thanks man, scooter wouldn't stay running, followed your tutorial and im back in business. Easier than I thought.
Try Hard
Just adjusted the valves on the 50 dollar taotao i bought. It would start but not idle or respond correctly to throttle. Idle problem solved and after carb tune it runs great. Subscribing. Thanks for the video
Buddy I just finished doing the valve adjustment on my 2019 Tao Tao powermax 150cc that I thought I was going to have to junk. Let me tell you it was instant success. Thank you thank you thank you. Outstanding, keep up the videos. I've never worked on a scooter but you made it easy.
This is probably the best valve adjustment video on CZcams. Brilliant explanation of everything.
Thank you very much
My mind is blown from how happy i get when ibhear the sound effects of every screw that gets removed. this is the most helpful tutorial I've watched in 2020
watched whole scooter 911 series.. what a presentation.. carefully made and planned... this is what professionalism is. learned a lot. thanks a ton😋
Thank you very much! I hope it helps you out!
That's exactly how I adjusted the springs on your mom's mattress.
@@Scooter_911 your videos helped me a lot. I hope you keep making these vids because I need them. I just got my scooter and it started out fine, then the issues started. I bought mine used. However, I do have a question. What can I do to make mine go a little bit faster? I'm in a hilly area and my weight is over 300. When I go uphill, I'm lucky if I can hit 17 mph. Any suggestions?
Bought a brand new moped that wouldn't stay running. Followed your guide and I was able to ride it around the parking lot finally... You saved me a bit of money, thanks for the great video!!!
me too...and idling stop on red signal also no ignition for restart at very dangerous traffic.
I am wasting a lot of money and time on a new brand pony50.
never again buying cheap price, made in ...It is kind of scam against customer.
Thank you thank you thank you thank you!!! I would have never got this without this video and my small engines class in high school…
This is like the Mr.Rogers show of scooter repair.
Man you have helped me with my rear brake sensor repair (didn’t know it got caught and broke). Now this video! Wasn’t getting the speed I should and rejetting wasn’t solving it. This was it! Riding WOT all the time this is a must!!!
Thanks bro, I'm a mechanic, and it took me forever to realize it was the valves, the exhaust valve was tight against the rocker. Just loosened it a bit and it solved it. Thanks lol
Hahah I'm a technician as well and I can't tell you how many times a quick drive down CZcams lane has given me the boost I needed!
THANK YOU SO MUCH! I was going mad replacing parts trying to fix this issue. Even had a well known shop tell me it needed $700+ worth of work when it was just the valves that needed adjusting. So glad you took the time to show us how it’s done.
You're not mechanic only, you are good speaker and teacher too, thumb up!,👍
Hi Garret. I'm really grateful for your guidance. Had exactly this problem on my little Gomoto 150 cc and your video worked like a charm. Thanks a million buddy. Ash
Love you man! You have helped me continue to ride several occasions as ive always been a do it myself er and i have continued to pass on your knowledge and repairs to many others. Its surprising how there isnt any scooter repair shops in my city not even parts... There is one scooter issue i cudnt resolve with youre or any videos online and that was a non starting scooter or once starting but not accelerating after replacing belt that tore while taking off luckily i bumped into an ex mechanic of closed shop that told me variater weight can shoot around if belt splits while driving and i made sense and thats what it was i was soo close to juat trashing the scooter lettin it go for parts and that was the only problem search for it online u can never find an answer for that repair im sure many are sitting with that issue....
I've been watching these videos for so long. It motivated me to get my own scooter because I was afraid of the maintenance. However you've made it so easy. Thanks so much my dude
Thanks Garret for as you say, "empowering me to fix my own scooter...just a bucket of bolts..."
Wow. This is so thorough and clear. One of the best CZcams's I've seen.
Thanks so much for posting this video! With this information I was able to do a valve adjustment myself and improve the performance of my Chicago Go scooter. Keep up the great work!
I've never been into mechanics stuff, but I LOVE the way you teach. You drawing it out and giving clear explanations helped me wrap my mind around this. Keep up the fantastic work.
The video game noises were a great touch btw 👌🤣
I wish i had a knowledgeable small engine mechanic like you living near us...
You're the best. Been watching your videos today as I just relocated to Hanoi where 95% of the city is running on scooters and have little knowledge of repair or spotting issues when looking to buy. Granted repair is cheap here, but no one likes being taken by a shady mechanic. Keep posting and keep up the great work!
Oh man you're in scooter central! If I were you i would look for a newer PGO. Very soundly built engines, lots of available parts and plenty of modern amenities. Thanks for the compliment!
This video has made me way more confident to try fixing my scooter (2005 Kymco People 50). Thanks a bunch for making these and posting them. You clearly take a lot of time with the sound effects (I laughed) and the multiple camera angles. Grateful for your content!
I have made my scooter worse from the other valve adjustment videos… I never knew you had to remove the spark plug, or where it was on this exact model (definitely messed that up the first time I tried to valve adjust). Thank you so much for this tutorial and these tips!
So glad to help!
That was just about the best mechanical "how-to" video I have ever seen. Thank you!
Thank you very much!
@@Scooter_911 Thats amazing 😉 Infact me too i have a scooter 150cc cityblade which had the same problem.Ive brought my scooter to several mechanics but in vain.1 ve spent lot of money replacing the carburator, brake switch ,starter even they told me to buy a new camshaft. Thanks God after watching your video i mustered all my courage and followed your step. The only thing which I bought is the milimeters thickness gadget.Once again am grateful to you. Thanks 😉😉
Great video. I like how you speak clearly and go slowly. Much appreciated!! Big 2 thumbs up and a definite like!!
Thank you very much! I work pretty hard to make sure everything is pretty understandable.
Picked up a 09 Sym HD 200 it hasn't been started for 5years or more. Fresh fuel, sea foam and new plug. It starts idles for 30 seconds dies and I have to wait for a while before it will start again also to get it to throttle up requires spraying a fuel source into air box. What do you think
Very good video. I adjusted my valves my scooter runs better than when the dealer did it while back. Thank you!
I always had a problem setting valves in cold or hot adjustments. However, it was never explained as well as you demonstated. Again, great job. Thank you.
This video is fantastic, lots of good information, clear and easy to hear/understand. You don't have nearly enough subs for such a high quality channel. Never change
Wow thank yo very much! I'll try!
The sound effects slay me, dude XD
Also thank you, I FINALLY understand what valve adjustment means!
Thanks for making such a clear, comprehensive and helpful video. I am a keen have a go DIYer, and after watching you video, feel I will be able to easily take on the valve clearance job. 🙏🏾👍🏼
And btw, I've been looking at many a video, and yours is by far the most professional. The music is great, I love how you speak slowly and clearly as if you really want people to grasp what you're saying. Also the diagram you drew was huge! I'm not a mechanic, but I had a power mechanics class in school and my dad built an amazing model of a car aee-through engine that even included a whole chassis and working brake system. I say that to say that i know how engines basically work with the whole valves, pistons, rocker arms, camshaft, etc thing, so it was interested to say how that work on a small scooter engine!! Thanks brah!!
One of the best explanations and presentations I have seen! Thank you and congratulations! Would have liked to see it run after fix to come full circle.
Yeah in hindsight I should have filmed it running more. I thought the scooter starting right up in the final scene would be more impactful.
Thanks garret. Confidence inspiring. I wish you taught my accounting classes in college.
Thanks for making all these scooter videos (really liked living with a tao tao). All the info and how you present it is just amazing. Currently waiting for my Pony 50 to arrive. I'm going to follow all of your recommendations. You are awesome!
Terrific video how to step-by-step valve adjustment!! I just bought a 2018 Tao Tao ATM 50cc scooter, my second one in 8 years...thanks for the video!!
Thank you very much! And congrats on your new purchase! Keep it shiney side up!
Thanks Garret, great video, scooter now starts runs like new. Not being mechanical I appreciate the education.
That is so great to hear! Exactly why I made this video!
This video is amazing! Instant sub... Great pace and detailed explanations. Loved especially the whiteboard with the theory on what should be fixed.
Thanks dude! Glad you liked it!
Thank you so very much for this video. I just did exactly what you showed us. I just took 3 times longer or more but I did it. What a feeling and thanks to you for taking your time to teach us.
Just got my taotao and trying to fix it. Found your video and while I haven't tried the method yet, I love your video. Really breaks it down and your terrible puns/sound effects are fantastic.
So glad you liked it! Let me know if it helped you out!
@@Scooter_911 made the valve adjustment but I'm having serious trouble otherwise. On my page is a video of what it's doing. If you have a minute could you check it out please?
czcams.com/video/yHD0G7Sj0cg/video.html
Thanks!
I work on them. One thing not mentioned on this vid is the reason you have to adjust the valves is the valve in question is wearing the head out which makes the valve adjustment tighten up. If you are adjusting the valves often you might as well get ready to replace the head. And a valve adjustment will not always fix the problem if the head is bad.
Time for a big bore kit
Great Video Brother!
I am facing the same problem in my kids scooter 50cc EFI and I shall trouble shoot mine with your guidelines.
Your presentation is very good, easy to understand and clear to watch.
Above all this, you have given highlights in description! what a beautiful way.
We can understand, how difficult it is to make such an elaborative presentation.
Thank you very much and Keep it continued... Thumbs up!
Thanks for these videos, it gives me the courage to tackle my Vespa power draining/battery not staying charged issue. I think it's the stator but I am a little scared to change it cause I don't know what I am doing. So Thank You I WILL do this!!!🛵
Very informative. Now I can dive on in to my Aprilia 200cc, but being careful that it is a bigger engine.
Oh and I like the Centipede music😁
Absolutely love your vids. In the middle of a valve adjustment now. Fingers crossed! It runs rough for a minute then does. Hopefully the adjustment solves it. It’s a 150 QMJ so I hope the clearances are the same.
Yes indeed! Those valve lash specs work for all chinese scooter engines!
Thanks so much master mechanic. I lost 3days of work but I got my bike back on the road with one try awesome
This was very easy and saved my moped. I thought it was low compression because it would barely start with the electric start when cold and i'd have to kick it and wait for it to die and restart a few times and let it warm up for 15 mins before I can get it to ride without dying. Now the moped fires right up when cold and works perfectly. Thanks!
Make sure you adjust them at the right top dead center (TDC). The piston is at TDC two times per combustion stroke. There's a mark for TDC on the flywheel, that you can see if you take the plastic cover from the fan. Turn the flywheel until the T mark is aligned with the pointy bit on the crank case. Then check if the 2 holes in the timing sprocket allign with the edge of the cilinder head. The smaller third hole should pointing forward. Then you have the right TDC.
I did this wrong once, so you don't have too. 😂👍
Exactly! That is why I like to wait for the intake valve to close. Right after it has closed you know you are on the compression stroke!
@@Scooter_911 you are also right. It's just a double check with the markings. I am just about to set the valve clearance on a friends scooter. The scooter hardly starts when it's warm, and it doesn't accelerate anymore, well it does for a second, then almost stalls, then goes again... I was suspecting ignition trouble, but first thing I am going to check is the valve clearance. Second thing is the vacuum membrane in the carburetor, might have a crack or puncture in it.
Very good explained! Thank you! Please do video about carburator setting/tuning and stator troubleshooting(no spark)
Thank you very much! I have a plan for both of those videos! So stay tuned!
I just got a 1987 Suzuki Fa50, it runs alright as is but since it has over 3000 miles [actually I should check if it's in Km or not] on it and I have no idea on the maintenance history I've been looking for videos and guidance on home maintenance so I don't need to take it into the shop for everything. Your channel has been really helpful so far
Thank you for the AWESOME tutorial Video. Great Job! I found an OLD
2005 Chinese "Qingqi" 4 Stroke GY6 Scooter with only 700 miles, this will fix the issue.
Bro, thanks for uploading this and for taking the time and patience. Very helpful. You saved me a ton of money on parts I didn't need to buy and work that didn't need to be done.
Man that is so good to hear. Thats exactly why I make videos!
@@Scooter_911 so since March I've been scouring Craigslist for scooters and mopeds. I finally purchased an SSR Lazer 5, 4 stroke. 291 miles on it, basically fresh still. I adjusted the idle screw yesterday without much effect on the stalling issue and was prepared to buy an aftermarket carb, jets and cdi. I'll be doing the valves in about an hour thanks to you. I'll check in later with the results.
@@Scooter_911 ok I was able to do the valve adjustment. She's running much better now, especially idling. I do believe I'll take it for a long ride tomorrow and then fine tune the job I did. My engine is set up a bit differently so the feeler was bent a little bit. I may still have too much lash but nowhere near where it was. Again we're talking about a 300 mile engine so it was running on factory assembly specs and heat expansion/break in. Thanks again my friend.
Again thanks for taking the time to reply I’ll keep a lookout for more of your great videos-Allan los angeles
Thanks to this video I’ve fixed my pals scooter it was well out on both and after cleaning carb jets plug checking electrics and good spark it started first time so I would like to thank you for this useful information 👍
It's like Ben Wyatt is showing me how to work on my scooter. Thanks for the video!
I do enjoy watching Garrets scooter videos there easy to follow and understand, thanks guy. I was wondering why you didn’t test your results before putting all the panels back in this particular video?
Your awesome dude that was perfectly informational, I can totally do that to my scooter now
THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!
This might just be why my 125cc ped is got low compression and not starting or running properly , already spent £150 on it and I will make sure I wont spend a penny more
Stumbled upon this video after having changed the oil, cleaning the piston/valves/combustion chamber, checking piston rings, installing a new carb, changing spark plugs ... Basically everything and still struggling to consistently start my scooter.
Have ordered a feeler gauge which should arrive in the next few days hopefully and will do the valve adjustments. Will check back in!
For the mean time, thanks for your very well laid out informative video!
Good luck!
Okay it worked! But still can't start consistently ... I'm thinking it's the auto enricher circuit, intermittently failing
Wow you just made me a subscriber. You explained this valve adjustment very clear compare to other videos. I would like to request for you to make a video on vacuum hoses and fuel lines for 50cc scooter thanks
Great suggestion! HOSES DEMYSTIFIED! Thanks for the comment! Keep it shiny side up!
Great production work, well scripted and executed.

P.s. did notice the Dutch sticker on the tool trolly 🇳🇱❤
Nice job man! Very well done and professional 🥸
Awesome vid bro. You are an excellent instructor
So I got one of these Tao Taos because i haven't had a license in 20 years (long story) and I'm tired of biking around everywhere. My main job is 20 miles away, and coming home too exhausted to do anything creative had to stop. Problem was Amazon had only positive reviews with 2 negatives showing, and like a complete and total goober, I took the bait. Only found out the day it arrived looking up how to set it up how hated these guys are. Im still trying to get it going. This was the video I needed. I still have to get the proper tools, but symptoms match and im excited to get it on the road ASAP. Love the vid, love your Life With a Tao Tao series, wish you the best in life.

German Torque Specs!!! Awesome video!
I find when you adjust them intake opening (adjust exhaust) -and exhaust just closes(adjust intake) it's a more accurate way and will give you a different lash than just the TDC method. The TDC method will work but not the right way. JMO
Wow I have not hear of that . And I am willing to try it. Thanks
I tried everything. This worked. Started right up. Thank you
Glad to hear it!
Did this today on my 2015 Benzhou 50cc. Fixed it perfectly! Thanks.

I hope not Bill Nye is so wrong so many times this Guy gets ti right

Thank you. im sure this might be the reason. I think ill engage a mechanic now I don't have all the tools and expertise to go that far. This looks more expect requirement.
Ms. Thandi, I performed my first valve lash adjustment on my motorcycle 50 years ago, it is *not* hard to do. Get yourself a cheap tool kit from Harbor Freight, (Google them), when they go on sale, (which is a lot). Make sure that all the tools you need are included in the kit. Buy a set of feeler gauges there as well, you'll pay very little money for all the tools that are more than adequate for this job. Next, take your phone out to your scooter and pause this video step-by-step. After you perform this job just one time, you'll have payed for you tools, and have a real sense of accomplishment!
PS, he didn't mention it in the video, but you should not make the adjustments when the engine is hot, (shortly after a ride), nor cold, (below about 50F degrees), because the clearances will change once the engine gets hot again.
I would love a reply if you do it!
