  • “It’s the mixed marriage between a violin and a plastic drainpipe.”
David Vorhaus demonstrates his wonderful new instrument, the Kaleidophon, as well as an array of excellent jumpers.
The instrument is played entirely using the left hand, leaving the right hand free to manipulate the sound.
Clip taken from Tomorrow's World, originally broadcast on BBC One, Thursday 2 December, 1976.

Fantastic instrument to produce, groovy, spacey sounds. Also very symbolic of manhood, they way he holds it, while sitting down. 😅

2:20 "Would it cost a lot?" ...as they pan across to what is now a highly valuable VCS3.... "The most expensive single item in this prototype is this plastic drain pipe." So back in 1976, a VCS3 was worth less than a bit of plastic pipe 😉

I think he's just talking about the "controller". The VCS3 was *never* cheap (just "cheaper" than a modular Moog)

You see that VCS3 of his ? Its serial number is 001 . That's because he was close friends with Peter Zinovieff the creator of the VCS3

I have a suspicion that I saw this when it was broadcast, as the instrument seems familiar to me. It's kind of like a Chapman Stick only far cheaper, and arguably a different approach, with its preference for ribbons over strings.
