  • Eyes are our tools for seeing the world. But what happens if one or both of these eyes disappear? What happens if you don't even realize that the vision you have is going away? That's what happened to me. It isn't what is me, its what happened. I am more than losing my vision. Emily Pickett is a junior at USF studying communications with a minor in history. She is a member of the Delta Gamma Sorority and holds a position as Director of Chapter Activities where she plans all sisterhood activities. Emily is also an intern as an event coordinator at Confetti Events. She also serves as an academic skills tutor for homeless kids at a nonprofit organization called Starting Right, Now. At age 5, Emily was diagnosed with Retinoblastoma and, after undergoing treatment, is a cancer survivor. With the support of her high school volleyball team, Emily and her team donated over $18,000 to Dig Pink by the time she was 18. Being a cancer survivor hasn't stopped Emily from pursuing her dreams, it has given her a purpose. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

      Well done for helping your people in war, much love. Now about having one eye, beleive me or not but I've got one eye ever since I was 2 1/2. I'm now 14. And don't worry your life is fine. My life is completley normal and I never stuggled with one eye. I can't even thing of any disadvantages I've generally had no joke bro. My life is perfect and it would feel weird if I had two eyes again because I'm so used to it. My earliest memory was when I was 4 and I remeber having a very good quality life back then. So after a few years you will get used to it and carry on living. Even now just carry on bro you will be fine.

    I'm blind in my left eye. I do not drive. I struggle with many things in life like you mentioned (walking into walls, often tripping down staircases, asking people to stand on my right so I can see them, etc.) But I still wake up every morning and do my best even though it's not easy. I am a filmmaker, actor and a Christian and active in my church. I'm happy for who I am. Great message of embracing yourself. Good job Emily!

    I am totally blind in my right eye-happened in Dec. 2017, my biggest fear is that the same thing will happen to the good eye...so far, so good, I am 74 years old..Monocular people do not have support groups or even online support groups, we are pretty much ignored....

    There's always someone worse off then you. You might have one arm but your neighbor might have no arms. I wouldn't say it's reason to feel good about yourself, but rather a reason to be grateful for what you have. I was born blind in one eye and I don't know any different. I can't imagine losing vision in one or even both eyes after having vision in both eyes.. Must take quite a while to adapt :| With regard to depth perception, it's not 100%, however, I have learned to use certain points of reference in my environment to help me judge depth a bit better.

    I also have only one working eye. She really needs to stop saying she has a disability. Kudos on surviving cancer. But living with only one working eye isn't difficult at all. You literally barely notice it. Your brain does the work for you and assembles the image. The social security administration doesn't recognize lack of stereopsis as a disability. I have yet to inspire anyone with my lack of a right eye, i dare to say she hasn't either

      @jigenappreciator4990 Před rokem +1

      Hey even miopia is a disability. Just because a disability is compensated for doesn’t mean you can’t define it as a disability. Also disability isn’t just what’s legally recognized as such

    • @crocsy1439

      Do you want an award for that? You think acting though and calling her weak makes you more "normal" in the eyes of binoculars? She said she faced struggles and you choose to invalidate them based in your own experience as a monocular.
      Also, monocular vision IS a disability, it just doesn't qualify you for SS.
