I always read the manual first because a lot of times functions are not always clear as to how to use some functions not all. A lot of hidden surprises come later after you can play with function buttons. Some radios more than others.
Call me a nerd but I always read every manual for the things I own. I also am the person people come to and ask how to operate the very same things they own. As I get older I am bored with it and tell them to google it as I don’t have the time to tell them something they should have done themselves.

I got the XHData D-808, and right off, the Manual disappeared. ( Haven’t seen it since).
So, yeah, the Internet is how I’m learning it.
