  • For six months, CBS News has followed a group of high school dropouts who received a second chance through a boot camp run by the National Guard.
Michael Scott, the First Sergeant of a National Guard boot camp for troubled teens, is in charge of the 28 sergeants who've made it their life's mission to turn at-risk students' lives around.
Troubled teens who used to see F’s and D’s on their report cards are now proudly boasting A’s and B’s.
Second Chances are what the Sunburst Youth Challenge Academy program is all about. Sponsored by the California National Guard and the State of California, the Youth Challenge facility has graduated more than 2,000 teenagers since 1998 and more than 1,700 have earned their GED or a high school diploma after attending this 22-week residential program. The National HS graduation rate is 78% while it is 72.5% in California. If you know of teenager that could use a second chance to turn their life around - please tell them about this program.

Lincoln’s Challenge Academy of Illinois in 2010 let Us make phone calls for 7 minutes on Laundry day, Saturday, and write and receive letters 6 days a week, or 5, I believe and write back as well! Other then that, Our interactions with central Illinois was doing community service, handing cups of water to marathon runners, shoveling mulch for a newly built playground, a variety of other things as well as Our march in Chicago during the Italian pride parade of 2010!

As someone who grew up in a very strict home to where others said it was military strict punishment was strict to grounded for months hard labor to where I have scars to .
Not only was I taught value of hard work but of respect discipline commitment and courage but of loyalty and honesty also been asked on the street if I'm military cuz how I carry myself walk and act

I contacted both sunburst and grizzly academy and they have to be willing to go. 😢 I keep bringing it up to him though, telling him he better pick where he wants to go or I’m going to pick a place he doesn’t want to go. Hope he decides & puts his energy into it💕 I wish the best for your granddaughter too. Maybe try that approach. I don’t know, it may work. I’ll pray for a breakthrough in you family. God bless you💕🙏🏼
