    Shannon, to become an all-purpose practisioner like you is now my goal. I'm an architectural graduate working towards a certified practisioner/builder in a construction ltd now. Your videos and your tips helped me a lot. This job is definitely far better than sitting in front of a computer screen operating CAD softwares for hours.

    Watching this bought back some memories, I worked at American Standard for 10 years out of high school back in the 80's before i went into law enforcement, then they moved their New jersey plant to Mexico. Looks like not much changed, flush valve looks improved, but that's about it. Your toilet was a refire, meaning when it came out of the One-fire kiln it had a slight defect which was repaired and re-sprayed then refired again. American Standard are quality, at least they were when I worked there, They did have a problem with the water quality in Mexico and it caused a lot to come out "dunted" or having hair line cracks, but they solved it through some water purification process. It was the hardest I ever worked in my life, but was a great way to get into the real world and learn to appreciate not physically killing yourself! Great videos, thank you.

    Great video!!! I replaced 2 toilets with this model a couple of months ago. Lots of great improvements since last time I replaced a toilet (especially around flange bolts and caps).
    The plastic tool used to secure the nuts for the tank bolts may also be used to tighten nuts for toilet seat bolts.

    I work at Lowes, and used to work in the plumbing department. I always recommend American Standard. Best toilet brand Ive seen. I have a Cadet 3 with a 3 inch flush valve. Works amazing. The champion 4's are even better since they have a 4 inch flush valve which allows a more powerful flush.

    Simply setting the ring onto the closet flange is fine and IMHO easier. For flanges that are set against the finished floor height it's often better to use a simple ring with no reinforcing plastic bit in the center. On our last one, the toilet weight was against the flange itself and was not resting on the floor due to the extra bit of space the plastic took up. Depends on the toilet though. Wax rings should be WARM and easily deformed. If your ring has been in a cool location it won't squish to make a seal and may crack down one side.

    Shannon, my late father in law solf plumbing supplies. He helped me replace my 1st toilet a few years back. He advocated using a bit of dish soap to whet the foam rubber seal between the tank and the toilet. Tighten down the tank so that it has a slight rocking so you know you're not too tight. Some parts of the country have a water conservation rebate. In Colorado, we have a rebate for the low flush toilet ($69.oo USD) and $50.oo for front load washing machines. My toilet replacement (comfort height) cost me about $50.oo after the rebate.

    I have better luck sticking the wax ring on the bottom of the toilet. I first heat up the base of the toilet where the wax ring goes with a hair dryer, press it on, twist very slightly and it seems to stick well with no problems. I always had problems putting the wax ring on the flange and the setting the toilet on top. Seemed to slide. Personal preference I guess. As always a good video Shannon

    This may sound like a strange idea , but I'm going to drill a hole beside my toilet flange and have a clear tube going threw the floor and back up again . I have an open basement , so this way I could visually see if there's a water leak under the toilet .

    Excellent video, particularly highlighting the importance of purchasing a toilet with dimensions suitable for the flange's distance from the wall. FYI, in Australia we have 2 outlets: the one on the wall you mentioned is a "P" trap, and the floor version (as in this video) is an "S" trap. We all need a toilet to be set up the right way - I think I read once that humans spend one third of their life in a toilet which is pretty incredible! (Or was that bed - one of the two anyway???) Thanks for the video. I'll be looking at your other videos - really appreciate your efforts to help us DYIers.

    I find your video very informative. As a Do It Yourself video, you should caution people about over tightening parts on a toilet such as the toilet seat and what it can do to the ceramic toilet. It can be a bummer if the installer breaks their brand new toilet fresh right out of the box. Snug the bolts, don't torque them...or snap!!!

    Shannon. I really enjoy your videos. I see that in this video that the flange was mounted on top of the tiled floor. I was told that the flange should always be flush with the surface of the tile, and if the flange was already in place before the tile was laid that a spacer should be used to bring the flange up to the level of the tile. I was told also if the flange is above the tile, depending on the toilet used, when mounted it could rock. Also, was told never use a double wax ring to fill the space because the wax could cause a blockage in the drain. I'm not a plumber, but I sure would like have your feedback on this matter. Thanks.

    • @HouseImprovements
      @HouseImprovements  Před 10 lety

      My thinking is if you have vinyl flooring the flange is always sticking up because it is never recessed into the plywood or concrete floor so why would it be any different than a tiled floor. This was a vinyl flooring in the video by the way. All toilets I have seen are recessed on the bottom about 1/2" and most standers flanges are about 1/4" so the room is there. As for the the double wax ring I generally only would do that when the flange is flush to the top of the floor, I guess it could partially block the pipe maybe. Thanks for the comments.

    • @ronbedford5164
      @ronbedford5164 Před 10 lety +1

      HouseImprovements Thanks for answering my concerns Shannon. So, I think I understand. Correct me if I'm wrong, that if there were an existing flange in place that was 1/4 inch above the plywood floor ( screwed to the plywood ) and then if the floor was then tiled, the flange would then be flush with the tile ( if a 1/4 thick tile was used ) and a regular wax ring could be used, but a double wax ring may be required.Is that correct? Thanks

  • @candeffect
    @candeffect Před 5 lety

    Don't use the 'funnel' type wax ring. Those fail far more frequently than the pain wax rings. Failure is mostly caused by a toilet that can move for some reason and by pouring hot water in the bowl and not flushing right away - causes the wax to melt.
    Make sure the wax is soft (with warm water) in cold weather before installing it. If it is too cold it can form a crack when placing the toilet on top of it.

      @@HouseImprovements Thanks for your response. I followed your guide and the install went great! I watched a lot of videos and your's was the most informative, imo. I had the same issue with my toilet coming out from the wall and it did rock front to back when I lifted up on it, but after caulking that stopped it. I also placed a small block between the tank and wall to ensure it doesn't move. You can't even see the block from any angle. Feels like a band-aid fix but is working for me. Floor is relatively flat, so not sure why it is doing it. Even shims didn't help.

    Great video. I just started watching a couple of your videos and it's nice to see a simple video with all the information without all the nonsense some people like to add to them. There is only one thing I hate about those small toilets. Those little round toilets should be banned so you can only get the elongated type. Those tiny things are the worst toilets for men. Not to mention not the most comfortable. If anyone ever asks you, recommend the elongated type, even if it's a woman. Sooner or later a man will need to use it. Men need their space, specially here. Lol . By the way I had never seen a toilet installation so it was nice to see everything from start to finish.

    Thank you for this video, do you know the brand name of the toilet you purchased for this video?
