As sadly too often, the Guardian isn’t particularly well informed about what happens in Europe. The protests are not just about the prices they get, but also about the complexity of environmental regulations they need to deal with. European farming has become increasingly intensive, efficient and technological over the last decades. While this has created high yields, it has come at an environmental cost. Farmers support decarbonisation and the restoration of wildlife but feel they are being given impossible targets and insufficient support.
I am expecting next week’s EU council meeting to change the pace of some of the measures and to strengthen agriculture support, also in the interest of food security in an unstable world.
