This is just for war propaganda. They've invited on several other youtubers also, some got to go on a submarine that busted through the ice. (smarter everyday and physics girl/ and I'm sure there are others). This is what they do to recruit more people, especially when they know there's a war coming and they need more soldiers. This is also why they put so much effort into TOP GUN the new movie. I wish I could say that this is just a kind gesture-- but it's not. Thanks to Aaron, Kevin and Rich for making such a great video, and of course, thanks to the RCN for allowing such great access. I have delivered equipment to these ships here in Halifax, and the ships may not be huge but they have travelled as far as West Africa and the Baltics in recent years. The personnel are always friendly and they know their stuff. Many of the women and men who sail these ships come from all parts of Canada, and have all different backgrounds, which is great to see.
9:25 I always get surprised when I see the floating dummy on board. Good to see him go for a swim. 👍
The next time you are in Halifax it would be cool if you could check out the base CFB Halifax Dockyards . They have a lot of cool stuff, including submarines and tugboats. Or checkout Halifax Shipyards Limited, where they are building Arctic Partol ships right now. 😎. Cheers Chris.

As a Brit can I just assure you and all Canadians of the love, admiration and gratitude we have for you and your country for being who you are, being our Commonwealth brothers and sisters and for being our allies. You were with us (as were other Commonwealth countries) in 2 World Wars from day two. Few fought harder and longer and too many young Canadians lie in European fields that will 'forever be Canadian'. You epitomise everything that is right about a country and you should be absolutely proud of who you are and your global reputation.
UK Forces always know the Canadians are just the best to fight alongside and have fun with. Many Canadian Forces serve on exchange with UK Forces and so we have RCN people right now on RN ships and most welcome they are. We serve(d) the same lady.
Canadian units (like the Van Doos and RCAF) have done great ceremonial trips here including 'Changing the Guard'. And mighty sharp they were too.
As for your southern neighbour? Well there is a well earned reputation in our Forces that 'they may have all the gear but still have no idea'. And as many a lady will tell you: Size ain't everything!
Allez Canadiennes, God Bless Canada and God Save the Queen.

Great video! And as strange as this sounds, by the end of the Second World War Canada had the third largest navy in the world, behind only the U.S. and Britain. We took on a huge role organizing and protecting the Atlantic convoys, with most of our ships being smaller destroyers, corvettes and patrol boats. The Glace Bay would have been perfect for these duties, I can easily see her spinning to dodge torpedoes with a Hedgehog mounted on that nice big forward deck.
I'm proud of our navy and our history, but I'm very glad we've been able to remain peaceful for all these years.

    • @DeeEight
      @DeeEight Před 2 lety +3

3rd largest by counting EVERY single ship, vessel, barge and small craft on the naval registry. If a row boat used by the guy tending a channel marker in Halifax harbor had a naval registry code on it, it was counted in the total. Its often mentioned "we had the third largest navy" but people never seem to realize the math was skewed by all the unarmed vessels that belonged to the navy ship lists. There were over 300 harbor craft counted in the total. There were nearly 90 tugboats. Thirty land based storage facilities, aka Stone Frigates were in the total also. Back in the mid 90s it was also a common line to say the west edmonton mall operated more submarines than the canadian navy (they had 4 at a time we had 3)... and that was true on paper however the mall was land locked and the submarines operated inside an artificial pool inside the shopping center.

Nice enough ships for what are Inshore Patrol Vessels in current parlence, but they displace as much a WW2 flower class corvette, have basically the same top speed, but are armed worse than a motor gun boat of that war. Some of the fast attack riverine boats used by the US Navy SEAL teams are better armed than this "warship". As built they had a 40mm Bofors L/60 mount pulled from museums and decommisioned destroyers built in the 50s and 60s, but all of them lost the Bofors mount over a decade ago. Other guns were a pair of M2 .50 Heavy Machine guns, one per side. Since the ships are used as coastal survey/bottom sonar vessels, training vessels, dive tender support ships, and mine sweeping.... they really out to equip them with the same 25mm remote weapon station mount that the Harry DeWolf class carries, or even a manually aimed one. Something where they can train sailors on something they might end up needing to use when they get transferred to a frigate or OPV. Because as the chief in the engine room said, no other ship in the navy uses the propulsion system of these ships (diesel engines only with Z-drive azimuth thrusters).

Team sweeping? In 2022? You have side scan sonar, but are Canadian waters actually regularly charted to the resolution required? And what method do you use to clear a passage through a modern mine? What happened to the main gun from WWII? No defence system…How far the RCN has fallen in reality…and frigates are not destroyers!! It is a morbidly unfunded exercise, much like the rest of Canadian Armed Forces. What will replace the class of ships?? Nothing?? Sad.

That's really interesting, I worked at a military rebuild facility which had lots of high tech manufacturing equipment used to repair and rebuild parts and pieces. Lots of applications of technology in the military.

Nice episode. The men and women of Canada's military need all of the support they can get from Canadians. If we had more shows like this we would see more appreciation for our military and taxpayers putting pressure on politicians to spend more money on the equipment our military deserves.

Historically speaking, our navy (and our military in general) is small outside of wartime. The navy still serves much the same role it has since its inception. Patrolling for smugglers, enforcing fishing treaties etc.

That must’ve been a cool experience. It’s amazing how so much steel and machinery can be put together to make a precise and agile vessel like that. It’s pretty miraculous what man can do when they decide they want to do something. Great video

Awesome video! So cool that they let you drive the ship! I wish you would have explained the “Z drive” a bit more. I understand that diesels run generators and the actual drive is by electric motors on pods under the hull connected to the props?

That's how trains operate too. It gives you more precise control. The diesel engines are far to brute to just try to use a clutch to run them-- there's too much load. These generators give you a buffer and make things last much much longer.

Z-drive is shaft driven. What you're describing is usually called an Azipod.

I served on the U.S.S Tarawa...just a little bit more involved in firing up the plant! If we had to take off for the weekend, we would start operations on like Wednesday! 750 psi Super headed steam! 750,000 hp per shaft hours power ! It was awesome!
