The idea of Groasis box is fine, except that apart from the company which is making millions out of selling these boxes to the sheikhs in Dubai, there does not seem to be much evidence of understanding on the part of the Arabs as to what is involved in trying to grow trees in the desert. Firstly plants need the company of other plants and trees. Individual plants standing in the heat and searing hot winds, will not, even if they survive to maturity, create a self-sustainig eco system where they will propagate more vegetation and trees. What is needed is walled areas where a variety of plants and trees are grown which support a combined and diverse ecosystem. This has to include local grasses, weeds, and wild seed plants and trees. Acacia should be the number one target of this project, as it is a tree that survives with very little water, and can withstand drought and heat. So for example if you had 20 walled areas of say an acre each, close to one another, with 1000 acacia saplings in each walled acre, with sufficient water supply and protection from dust storms and wind, then within 5 years you will have 20 thousand acacia trees in an area of 20 acres, standing close to one another. Even if the success rate of this is only 50%, you will have 10,000 acacia trees growing up in close proximity to one another. This will create an environment where other plants and trees of other varieties could be planted among the acacias which will survive due to protection from wind and heat. Once a diversity of plants and trees are standing to maturity in this area of 20 acres, it could be joined to 20 or 50 other similar walled patches grown simultaneously. That could then begin to have an impact in the local environment. Trees provide much more than just shade. They will attract moisture and a diverse population of insects, birds, bees; and before you know it, the place could be transformed. Arabs will achieve this only if they left their air-conditioned offices and palaces to come out, tuck up their sleeves, and get their hands dirty, working alongside others to create something with their own efforts, and not throw
petro-dollars at foreigners to come out and do their bidding.

this is no new technology clay pot filled with water burried under sand can work the same. as it have semi permiable membrane... and 1 acre of trees with miyawaki style planting can create a savannah in the desert.. and every winter when it rains in dubai it can sustain and store water.. in gobi desert they mixed in sand with compound made from rice flour and sand started to act as a clay holding water and they planted trees that support animals from smallest _producing seeds, to largest _ producing fruits . and before human habitation it was savannah

Many years ago, I saw a documentary where they placed some high walls made of dense nets of a particular material which were able to capture drops of water created by the humidity in the air in the desert. The amount of water collected in this way was enough to water the entire area along the walls. I think I saw this project in the early 1990's, however I don't really know what happened to it. In my opinion, for a project to be successful, it has to be a mission to restore the life of many species as well as humans. If the motivation is purely economical, it is destined to fail. Nature is our teacher and she's collaborative if you do things for a profit, you loose focus of what really matters!

This is a perfect way for growing the shrubs that don't rely on groundwater. Once these shrubs established, they survive depending completely on the atmospheric moistures. Such plants flower and grow nicely under the very harsh dry conditions of Dubai; without a single drop of conventional water

i agree their doesn't seem to be a lot of progress and this doesn't look to be a big investment all things considered, but remember growing trees in the Arabian dessert is extremely challenging and its extremely unsuitable for forestation, China is reforesting land in inner Mongolia that use to be forests, growing sustainable forests in Arabia with its dry hot days and cold nights is a very challenging process.

It was a prototype. The point was to test out a new technique to see how it worked relative to other techniques. You don't take an untried idea and massively scale it unless you want to waste resources, and you don't copy what everyone else is doing unless you think there's no way to improve on it.

I see another path of innovation for you... an aerodynamic ring-shaped sand shield around the outside, maybe staked into the ground separate from the boxx, so that the condensation ridges don't fill with sand but instead the sand rises up and blows over the top like over a dune. Or maybe just sculpt the lid more to get rid of that raised lip that traps sand, so that the condensation slots slope all the way up to the top of the lid, and sand is naturally blown out over the side.

That is amazing way to protect the Ghaf (Prosopis cineraria) trees to survive the first critical year of their life. Taken into consideration, the small plants of Ghaf were completely relaying on the waterboxx, their roots should be confided to the top surface layer of the soils. We have a big problem in the artificial forests in the UAE with all plants have shallow roots and are independent..... After more than 30 years, they still receive water and never able to depend on themselves, like the trees of the natural deserts.

I was thinking. If those small trees are able to survive without adding water, the water table is relativelly close.
So, probably If they were protected from grazing animals, then vegetation would come back by itself.
Finding a way to limit grazing animals would be beneficial.
I would also transplant patches of vegetation from green areas, and plant them from place to place just that they can spread their seeds around.

you would be surprised how good watertable the sand dunes have. I would suggest to pile sand onto the tree as it growes higher. This would enhance its growth and rise watertable. This way the tree (I guess it is desert acacia) would develop very deep roots and become very hard for surviving even during bad draughts, providing regular food for the camels as well as a microclimate for certain desert grasses to grow seasonaly around it, if there are more trees in the group, obviously not on top of a sand dune but in a little depresion next to it.

    • @FeelingShred
      @FeelingShred Před 7 lety

the problem is: when there is grass in a soil, this is a sign of a soil who will soon become desert-like, because weeds prevent other productive species from growing... You can notice this in Masanobu Fukuoka's work (natural agriculture). And to prevent weeds and retain moisture in the soil, there must be a layer of organic material to provide shade to the soil, that way soils can be recovered. But the question is: from where can they bring organic material to this desert? The logistics of it would not be cheap, but for sure it would not be wasted money.

The Waterboxx is only needed for 9 to 12 months. After that the have reach the capillary water and survive on there own. You can see this because at that moment the tree al of an sudden grows faster. You can remove the Waterboxx and the tree not only lives on but trives, taken into account the conditions the tree or bush is growing in.

This is certainly nice but it's not going to reforest the area, if the place ever had forest to begin with even during the ice age when it was wetter, doing it like this . Yes, they have demonstrated the boxes appear to work but the way it has been implemented isn't going to give the desired results in the long turn. This isn't a temperate climate that receives lots of rain planting some trees in acres of grass to line a road and provide some beauty. If you want to reforest or in this case create a new forest it's going to take dozens of varieties of drought resistant trees and plants placed in at least acre sized plots that are well protected. One has to attract the insects and birds Dubai would do better foresting the city first creating a huge green zone . Then moving outward. There are many successful forestation projects going on that are a better fit to this situation than these pots. Not saying the pots couldn't be used only that the planting scheme isn't going to bring the results hoped for.

Man is very greedy and that is why we are in the state we are in but if people can make money restoring the planet I figure anything to get the job done. In this world there are so many people who are unemployed and can't afford to live. Why not pay them to do something like this rather than pay them to do nothing but play on their playstations all day. Someone should get numbers on how many people are unemployed in the world and calculate how many trees can each person plant a day. I bet you we could reverse our damage in a very short time.

China has done far far better in greening deserts other than this foolish groasis method. Try to learn from China or directly appoint them for greening of deserts.

Whyare you squendering all that plastic? Will it ever be recollected or will it sink in dubaian sands for thousands of years? If it takes 50 litres of water to create one single plant, i would think it is rather stupid to 'invest' it in these plants. Better give it to people thatreally need it. Also the drilling of the hole is indeed very much wasting energy that is probably taken from gasoline. Do you get the point? You try to solve problems created by the exact same mechanisms you use. It would be great so see a development taking place in that sutuation. Climate has changed mostly by pollution caused by industrial use of oil and gas so try avoiding it whenever you can.
