Modelling Realistic Trees

- Just a video on how I’ve made the trees for my layout today. For me, this method works out the cheapest whilst still making trees that look realistic and to the correct scale. I think a lot of modellers vastly underestimate just how large trees are in the real world!
One £3 ole of wire makes 20-30 large tree armatures. These can be enhanced by adding texture to the wire trunks with clay, although to be honest this is hardly visible when the trees are in situ.
As always, thanks for watching.
without a doubt the best model trees video known to mankind. Well done.
Thanks! Glad you liked it 👍🏻
Is there no end to your talent? Those trees are excellent. Cheers, Bob
Thank you very much Bob.
Best tree method I have seen. Thanks for video 👍
Thanks very much David, glad you enjoyed it.
brilliant How to... Liking the idea of wire and DAS clay for the trunk and branches Thanks for sharing
Thanks Kev 👍🏻
Very realistic looking trees .Good to see they are a decent size .Modellers seem to forget trees are huge well done.
That’s true. Thank you David.
Hello, very nice landscaping and good job for the trees. Greetings from France.
Thank you!
As always a first class video. The trees look so real. Several months ago I walking through our local park after a storm and I was amazed at the amount of dead twigs and mini branches lying on the ground. With careful selection I gathered up a dozen or so twigs etc. which had the desired shape to make trees. I then sprayed each one with a 50/50 solution of PVA glue and water to give them added strength. After they dried I applied the foliage in the same manner as you did when making your trees, and I must say they look good.
Thanks very much Greg that’s a fab idea. I’ve seen a lot of people use something called Sagebrush as armatures as well which is a sort of natural twig but I haven’t found that in the UK yet. Like you say, with a bit of hunting regular branches and twigs are probably just as good!
'Brilliant Trees'. I am using that sea stuff from now on. Took me 3 months and 4 km of wire to make a lombardy poplar once. Sod that. Superb video and hyper- realistic.
Thank you. It’s good stuff, just a shame its become so much more expensive than it was.
You deserve to be in print, Lewis. Your layout is superb. Regards, Henry.
Thank you Henry!
Wow. Thank you for showing us your amazing Trees MR. Your new extension is stunning.
Thanks Richard, appreciate it!
Thanks Lewis, I found it ! I must have overlooked it - sorry. I need to order the seafoam trees and give it a try. Thanks for sharing! Greetings, Filip
It used to be £4-5 for a box of seafoam about 5 years ago, not it’s £20!!!
It's always a pleasure to watch your video clips, Please do not stop making your videos it would be very sad!
If I could say on behalf some of your viewers like Greig Hale, hope he doesn't mind me adding his name on here, we all think the amount of time you put into your videos to show us is great , your layout you have created is like we have all been beside you going through your journey.
Keep your clips coming.
Brian 👍
Thank you as always Brian, really appreciate it. I’ll be sure to keep them coming don’t worry, I find them very enjoyable to make! Cheers, Lewis. :-)
Another great how to video, real pleasure to see final outcome........
Thanks Richard!
I never get tired of your videos. I love how these trees turned out. They look great and the layout keep growing in awesomeness. Already waiting on your next video! Clint
Thank you Clint :-)
That is TREEmendous it's 2.30 am Saturday morning and I'm on nights having a rough old shift then ping a cracking vid from MR ....cheers me up no end beautiful trees kind regards Rob
That’s great Rob glad I could help brighten up your shift! Thanks very much as always mate.
Beautiful trees - You have demonstrated a great method. Thank you.
Thanks mate :-)
You're layout is a pleasure to see Thank you
You’re welcome, thanks for watching!
Really good to see another's take on tree making, like the idea of heavier wire. if i might add, cutting and spreading the bottom loop outwards leaving a couple still downward to go through the base, you can model gnarled old root systems as well also add to stable anchor. hope you dont mind that input. Best wishes Paul at Sandling Junction
Not at all Paul that’s a fantastic idea. I’ll have to give that a crack next time. Thanks for the idea!
thank you for your input
This is going straight into my notes and into practice. Great method. And proper size trees. Thank you, you have a new subscriber.
Thanks very much, appreciate it :-)
Great video the trees look fantastic, and just add another dimension to your already amazing layout which is just getting better with each layer of detail that you add. Regards George...
Thank you very much George.
WOW! those trees are incredibly realistic, very clever indeed.
Thank you, appreciate it.
Just been watching a few demos for some ideas, yours is by far the best method (imho); thank you!
Thanks very much 👍🏻
Another great idea that I'm nicking from you (the other being the dry stone walls!)
Haha cheers Mark, nick away!
Fantastic job. Love it. Yes, as for size, we do underestimate it. A “young” oak, of meaningful size is, at minimum, approx 30cm tall. There’s certainly more wood than expected or envisaged when you fell a tree in real life! Cyril Freezer mentions the size comparison in a couple of books. Much of the railway, as we know, is surrounded or lined in trees and a close observation of cuttings and woods can be quite revealing.
Super video & technique, thanks for sharing.
Thanks very much mate. I completely agree it’s interesting how much we seem to scale trees down!
Excellent and look very realistic.
Thank you Mr Brown!
Mouldy Raspberry Thank you Mr Mouldy!
Great way to make trees and very simple I'll have to try them.
Cheers
Thanks mate. Glad you found it useful :-)
Brilliant
Thanks 👍🏻
Nice work on those trees.👍👍
Thanks matey!
Great video, my little boy and I will be giving it ago this weekend.
Thanks Richard, I’m sure they’ll look the part!
Impressive. Looks amazing on your layout too.
Thanks very much mate.
First class as usual. Need I say more? Paul
Thank you Paul :-)
You're a genious!
I might change my channel name to ‘Genius Raspberry’
Great video and easy to follow!
Cheers Jaco
Cheers Jaco.
Thanks for sharing, it helps debunk any feeling that decent DIY trees are out of the average modellers reach otherwise leaving the only option to buy expensive pre-made items. My only fear for when I have a go is that the layout I’m mostly going to need plenty of foliage on needs to fold away quite flat meaning anything not attached to the backscene needs to be fully removable (and so regularly handled and stored) and even that fixed to the backscene lives a more disturbed life than a fixed layout, so I wonder how well hairspray holds up or whether I need a more potent adhesive. Mind you, this is why we experiment! Keep up the great work, I’ve massively enjoyed following these videos and love that you’ve captured a railway running through stunning landscape.
Thanks very much. That’s an interesting one, and I’m also not sure how the hairspray would hold up when being moved and handled frequently. I’ve been a bit lazy with that, simply because my layout isn’t going anywhere so I’ve not made much effort to make anything handleable... like you say, the only way is to try a few methods. Best of luck with them :-)
Great! Coincidentally similar to the way I make mine. I haven't tried larger ones yet, I've used individual pieces of seafoam sprayed brown and light green coarse turf on top. It makes such a good difference putting trees down.
Thank you. It does make a huge difference! I’ve done what you suggest as well with the individual pieces, and it looks good having some large more scale trees in there as well.
Hi - just watched your video on how you make your beautiful trees - thanks a lot for this, most instructive. Couldn't help noticing the snake sweatshirt, do you keep them? We have two, a Corn and Royal - lovely pets. Regards, Teresa
Thanks Teresa - glad you found it useful. Well spotted! I’ve just got a corn. Great pets indeed, and probably the easiest/cheapest animal I’ve ever kept! That’s great you have a Royal as well.
They look really good. Was intending to buy the layering spray for my scatter, hedges and trees but it seems hairspray is a much cheaper option!. Cheers.
I’ve used hairspray for the whole layout and everything’s held up fine mate, I’d definitely save some money and get some good old pound shop hairspray. I do get some funny looks when I rock up to the counter with 10 cans though......
for those in Australia, it can be found as Teloxis Aristata
look great when finished. very nice
Thanks mate
very nice layout you got there .Thumbs up for you .Hope you like mine diesel dave's
Thanks Dave!
I think I need to have a crack at this - just priced 'trees' in the local model shop - I think I would need to call a bank in Zurich first!
No doubt about that! If you wanted a realistic amount it would coast a small fortune!!
Where do you pick up the sea foam. Love your work and layout
Thanks mate. I get the Gaugemaster stuff online. It’s not that cheap though £17 a box........ it looks so much better than a lot of other methods however.
Saved me asking GaugeMaster on line shopping here we go
Why black rather than brown trunks, may I ask?
Honest answer - They only had black primer in the poundshop!
