- This week i made a Marking Knife from Olive Wood and a broken Sawblade.
It´s a present for April Wilkerson :)
I didn´t harden the steel because this Knife will only be used to mark wood...i don´t think it´s necessary to harden it.
This Knife is a prensent for my friend April...i will meet her in a couple days in New York! woohoo!

i've been meaning to send a custom made stamp, but when i tried the post office just returned it, how did you do it? if you don't mind me asking?

Beautiful project Laura! The olive wood has an anbelievable awesome grain. The say, after 10 years of a cutten tree, you can find oil and moisture when you cut it.

Cool project! For future reference, when you got the tip so hot it turned blue you removed the temper from the metal. Keep a bucket of water and a rag nearby and dip it often as you go along. The same is true for the grinding, don't want to get it too hot.

Cactus! workshop I think it might've been a bandsaw blade so it would be hss so the blue doesn't matter

Awesome as usual! I wonder if it should have been heat treated or if the original heat treat of the saw blade was enough?
from the look of the blue tip after grinding the bevel it needed a new heat treatment. it's likely the tip won't hold an edge
I thought the same thing, but I'm pretty sure you could scratch a line in wood with a butter knife. :)
John Harvey This is true! I guess severing more fibers is always good though, since scribing lines is just as much about preventing tearout as it is about marking the line.
i think it will be okay. it´s just for marking and april knows how to sharpen a blade...so i am not worried about that at all
Thought the same. It should be for maximum hardness, but for wood it will be finde.

Sweet project Laura! I was wondering, what was the blade that you used the steel from off of? Was it a bandsaw blade?
i got this broken blade from my steel supplier. it´s from a huge metal "hacksaw" pretty thick blade...

Well done! Also...that disc sander absolutely devoured that olive wood. As soon as you put some pressure on it, material just *poofed* away. I bet you could feed that thing a 4x4 in just a minute or two.
yeah i just put on a new sandpaper...so it is very hungry now :)
