  • In this episode of the Spotlight on Culture, Society, and Religion series, Dr. Anthea Butler of the University of Pennsylvania talks about her recent book, White Evangelical Racism, which narrates the history of evangelicalism from the nineteenth century to the present through the lens of racism and a politics of morality. According to Dr. Butler, once we understand how racism has been at the core of conservative evangelical activism, we can better understand why white evangelicals have laid claim to morality while supporting politicians who act immorally by most Christian standards.
    About the Expert
Dr. Anthea Butler is Geraldine R. Segal Professor of American Social Thought and chair of the Department of Religious Studies at the University of Pennsylvania. Dr. Butler’s research and writing spans African African American religion and history, race, politics, evangelicalism, gender and sexuality, media, and popular culture. You can find more of her writing and public engagement at www.antheabutler.com.

Before watching the video, when you heard the words “evangelical” and “evangelicalism,” what words, images, or ideas came to mind?
What is something in the video that surprised you? Why was it surprising?
When the evangelical leader Billy Graham was asked to comment on Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s “I Have A Dream” speech in 1963, he responded, “Only when Christ comes again will little white children of Alabama walk hand in hand with little black children.” What do you think Graham meant by this response? What was he trying to persuade people to think or do? How might Butler see racism at work in these words?
According to the Black evangelist Tom Skinner, “The evangelical church in America supported the status quo. It supported slavery. It supported segregation.” Why do you think so many white evangelicals supported slavery, segregation and other forms of racism? Are there any social values or theological beliefs common among white evangelicals that may have fueled the rise of white evangelical racism? Which social values or theological beliefs did Butler mention or allude to in the video?

She just said a whole lot of nothing in order to sell a book and continue to sow confusion and unnecessary divisions. And the reason why I said "unnecessary divisions" is because we are people who make up our own minds once confronted with the REAL truth and then separate ourselves from what's detrimental. The broad brushing of evangelism as a racial construct is ridiculous. Yes there were and are racial injustices happening such as with Bob Jones University etc, but to view all white evangelism under the same scope is narrow minded and wrong. She mentioned Focus On The Family which is a sound and good platform for conveying honest biblical Christian/church view on all topics in life. To lump white evangelicals who supported former president Trump as part of a "racist white evangelical" movement is absurd. Blacks supported Trump because he had a common sense approach with policy both economically, and in the best interest of the country as a whole. Free market principles that works for anyone who applies them. Not complicated. What this book is all about, is simply a reach to distort and continue to race bait for the political convenience of the Democratic party, of which a lot more blacks are finally waking up and asking the question.. "What have you all actually done to lift blacks out of the status of lacking and being behind... Even after the first black president Obama?". But here is the simple solution: Stop voting against our interests such as with abortion which keeps us in the minority populous as was intended by Planned Parenthood over 60 years ago. Two famous black leaders... Dr. King and supreme court justice Thurgood Marshall was bamboozled by the likes of Planned Parenthood who sought out to eliminate the problem of overpopulation, and therefore target us by offering supposedly "access to better birth control measures" aka abortions for the lower income mother who couldn't afford a child/children economically. The REAL books are written about this. It's a new day now...WOKE!! PEACE and GOD BLESS

In that, both political party utilizes..as we all, free market principle in advancing our livelihood. Everyone makes a dollar unrestrained. Representation of ideas are allowed, and the right to accept or reject ideas comes according to whether someone thinks the ideas are assets to all or liabilities waiting to happen. Such as what we're all experiencing under a clueless old political figure like Joe Biden. But all too often the villain is by narrative, such as the supposed "White evangelical" and as I said the willfully ignorance in broad brushing all as culprits. I'm 65 year old and experience the era of segregation and desegregation as well as fighting against racist elements here in Charleston SC years ago. The Dylan Roof tragedy is a typically misguided assumption as to how it is in the south. Blacks and whites live, work and play together here. There will always be evil in every ethnicity or culture. Political party sentiment comes with a caution as to trust but verify actions. Legislation and policy is what we all should take notice of and not the hype of political promises. Sad to say, the Democratic party mantra of promises comes with a fringe concept of governmental dependencies in guise of "Taxing the wealthy or the One percent"..class envy. Instead of making it possible for the free market principle by participated people to prosper through self achievement. If Africans decide to follow the Christian faith it is not because a pastor or an evangelist from the west came to Africa , we have enough people who can do that calling here , in fact i think in the near future African men and women of GOD will come to western world to preach the WORD.

How about you learning what the definition of what racism is first and which group pretty much has the monopoly on practising it. Remember Dylann Roof, he was warmly welcomed into a black church and, how did he repay the worshippers there for their warm welcome. Oh I must not forget the ones before who were killed in their church whilst worshipping e.g . Four black children killed by bomb placed in their church September 15th 1963 in Alabama. I suggest you read books that you may learn some truth from not the lies many are fed.

Hmm maybe because black churches don’t teach that there are no blacks in heaven or that blacks become white in heaven ? Yes blacks can be racist but they are not backed by their governments and communities in harassing people of the wrong color !!!
